thefastpaceofdigitizationishavingamajorimpactonwhatareknownas‘vertical’industries,includinghealth,transport,logistics,manufacturingandenergy,andinenvironmentssuchassmartcitiesandintheeducationandpublicinformationsectors.ThisisprovidingopportunitiesfortheICTindustrytogetherwiththeseverticalindustriesandnewplayerstobringtothemarketnewandinnovativesolutions.It isclearthat5Gisgoingtobeakeyenablerofthistransformation,accommodatingthediverseconnectivity,storageandprocessingneedsineachoftheseindustrysectors.Eachnewdirectionfor5G,fromenhancedmobilebroadband to massive connectivity supporting the Internet of Things, and high-reliability low-latencyconnectionstoprovidesecurereal-timecontrolapplications,providesopportunitiesforverticalindustriestoexploittheseenhancedcapabilities.Fundamentaladvances,suchastheconceptofnetworkslicing,willenable5Gtobeprovidedasa‘systemofsystems’tosuchawiderangeofcustomers.Supportingthiswillbeanewcommunityofdevelopersandentrepreneurstoimplementanewwaveoftechnologyinnovationoftheverticalapplications.WWRFisattheheartofthisprocess,withitsVerticalIndustryPlatformscreatingabridgebetweentheICTandverticalindustries,andprovidingopportunitiesinitsmeetingstopromoteanddiscussnewdevelopments.
