Company Presentation
Background
MCG was founded as a private company on January 1978, as a continuation of the activity started by Mr. Manuel Conceição Graça, over 40 years before.
The main activity used to be the refurbishing of vehicles and, afterwards, the production of chassis and cabins for trucks (Scania).
The construction of current facilities (Unit 1 parts production) on 1978 has allowed the extension of the activity towards the metal components for the automotive industry. The production of tools and dies as well as the vehicle assembling was maintained in the old facilities. Later in 1999 the tooling production was finally transferred to Unit 2 – tooling production, close to Unit 1.
Over the last decades major investments have been made on both tooling construction and parts production plants, not only in terms of technology but also on management and information systems, which have definitely pushed the company into a higher global level.

R&D Partners & Projects
Partnership MCG - IST
http://tecnico.ulisboa.pt/en/
Since its creation in 1911, Instituto Superior Técnico is the largest and most reputed school of Engineering, Science and Technology and Architecture in Portugal.
It has three campi, all located in the Greater Lisbon area (Alameda in Lisbon, Taguspark in Oeiras and Tecnológico e Nuclear Campus in Loures),
Partnership MCG - IST
MCG sponsors manufacturing labs at IST (NOF)
Partnership MCG - IST
MCG works in cooperation with IST and PhD Paulo Martins on several projects that lead to several paper publications (that we can share and discuss) and magazine covers
R&D Projects (concluded) – MouldCork
Optimize thermal, acoustic and damping characteristics on structural metal components
R&D Projects (concluded) – Mould Cork
Challenge: Optimize thermal, acoustic and damping
characteristics on structural metal components
Conventional approach Use of insulators and damping materials
applied after assembling operations
MCG Approach: Optimize a composite cork base polymer
for conventional stamping process, taking advantage of three characteristics associated with cork:
Low weight High acoustic and damping performance High thermal performance
R&D Projects (concluded) – Tube Forming
Challenge: To replace the welding
connections by others with the same mechanical characteristics
Conventional approach Conventional welding
MCG Approach: Replacing conventional welding
by mechanical connection based on tube forming operations
*Patent pending
R&D Projects (concluded) – SPIF
Challenge: Produce functional prototypes without tooling investment.
Conventional approach Production of conventional tools for prototypes
production.
MCG Approach: Depending on part geometry we have the two options:
SPIF and laser-cut SPIF, laser cutting and conventional stamping tools.
R&D Projects (concluded) – Max Nesting
Challenge: Reduce raw material consumption to
the theoretical minimum with no
additional blanking operation.
Conventional approach Reduce raw material consumption
with blanking operation
MCG Approach:
MCG MaxNesting synthesizes
blanking + stamping in one
operation
R&D Projects (concluded) – OMNIDEA
Following the collaboration with aeronautics company Omnidea, MCG mind for metal as his partner was represented at the 50th Le Bourget Salon Avionics held between 17 and 23 June 2013 in Paris.
Goal: the production of pressure vessels in high performance aluminum (aeronautical use), with subsequent filament winding of composite fibers in order to withstand the very high pressures required. According to the current project plan, these reservoirs will be qualified for use in space propulsion systems ion the new generation of satellites and Space Vehicles.
R&D Projects (on going) – REELCOOP
http://www.reelcoop.com/partners
REELCOOP (REnewable ELectricity COOPeration) is a EU/FP7 funded project aiming to develop renewable electricity generation technologies and promoting cooperation between EU Partner Countries and Mediterranean Partner Countries, which started in 1 September 2013, with a duration of 4 years.
What is REELCOOP (in a nutshell) • development, construction and testing of a building integrated PV system (with ventilated facades), a hybrid (solar/biomass) micro-cogeneration ORC system, and a hybrid concentrating solar / biomass mini-power plant • organisation of Workshops on Renewable Electricity technologies (4, one every year) open to junior researchers and outside public • technology transfer and dissemination regarding the developed technologies
R&D Projects (on going) – LATCH
LIGHTWEIGHT THERMOPLASTIC COMPOSITES Non Disclosed Information Partnership with MOLIPOREX and INEGI Objective: To develop and integrate new materials unidirectional thermoplastic matrix and its associated technologies Materialize the construction of a prototype of an automobile structural member The consortium will test new materials and processes with a view to their suitability and application component to develop in order to match their capabilities mechanical performance with a significant reduction of actual weight
