Thiscourseteacheshand-codingwebsitesinHTMLandCSSusingamodernwebstandardsapproach.Thecoursebeginswithabrieftwo-weekreviewunitongeneralprinciplesofdesignascommunicationaswellasuser-centeredwebdesignprinciples.StudentswillthenspendthemajorityofthesemesterlearningabasicsetoftoolsandbestpracticesfordevelopingindustrialstrengthmodernwebsitesusingHTMLandCSS.Thefinalfewweeksofthesemestercoversadvancedtechniques,includingCSS3,someJavaScript,andpossiblysomePHP.Uponcompletionofthecourse,studentsshouldbeableto:
• Developwebsitesusinghand-codedHTMLandCSSusingamodernwebstandardsapproach.• Understandhowtowritehighquality,well-organizedHTMLandCSScodethatseparates
presentationfromcontent,enforcesdesignconsistency,andfacilitatesfuturechangestothesite’scontentordesign.
• HaveabasicunderstandingoftheroleofJavaScriptinwebdesign.StudentsshouldgainenoughofanunderstandingofwhatispossiblewithJavaScripttohelpthemworkmoreeffectivelywithprogrammers.
• Beabletouseprinciplesofwebusabilitytogeneratecritiquesandsuggestionstomakeawebsitecommunicatemoreeffectively.

Mostclasssessionswillincludeanin-classactivitytogiveyouhands-onexperiencewiththedesignprinciplesand/ortechniquescovered,aswellastocheckattendance.Thesewillbeturnedinattheendofclass,usuallyonMoodle.Smallhomeworkassignmentswillalsobeassignedperiodically.Mosthomeworkassignmentsaresmallandareannouncedintheclasssessionimmediatelypriortowhentheyaredue.Soifyoumissclass,makesuretochecktheslidesonMoodlerightaway.Alsonotethatyourlowestfouractivity/homeworkgradeswillbedropped.Thismeansyoudon’tneedtotellmewhyyoumissaclassunlessyouhavemorethanfourdocumentedabsences,andthatifyouhaveperfectattendance,youcanskipuptofourofthehomeworkassignments.In-classactivitiesusuallycan’tbemadeup,buthomeworkusuallycan.Itdoesn’thurttoask.
FinalProject
Eachstudentwillcreateahand-codedHTML/CSSwebsiteforalocalbusinessororganizationduringthesecondhalfofthesemester,dueonthelastdayofclass.Manyofthein-classactivitiesinthesecondhalfofthesemesterwilldirectlycontributetothisproject,buttogetanAyouwillhavetodevotetimeoutsideofclasstoimprovingandfleshingoutyourdesign.Gradingwillemphasizeuseofthetechniqueslearnedinclass,includinggeneraldesignprinciplesandwebusabilityprinciplesreviewedinthefirsttwoweeksofclass.Aestheticsandpolishareonlyaminorcomponentofthegradeforthisproject,somakesuretofocusonusabilityandcorrectuseoftheHTML/CSStechniquesyoulearninclass.
