Meredith as we have an apa

down
the road just a

mile
from them.
March 13, in Tokyo, Japan, Paul and Faith (Maxey) Axton had th eir f ir st child,
a baby daughter, Erin Noriko . Noriko is the
name
of
Faith s
close
Japanese f ri end from
childhood.
The day after
the
baby was
born,
by
the
miracle of
direct
dial telephone.

Ancestor worship has been a living issue fo r

the early 1800 s. Moving east , we visi ted
Mission Serv ices and talk ed

there
before
going on
next
door to
Johnson Bible
College.
We
spoke
at chapel
there all
day in
classes
and
met with mission
recru i ts in the
evening. We spoke at Erwin TN Sunday morning and got
snowed
in at
Knoxville
TN as
we tried
to
return
to Cincinnati
that
night . , Absolutely,
we ve exper ienced the
worst
drivin
conditions this time of any
other
furlough.

matter, it is time to return to th e familiar faces and

spent
over one
half of
our l ives .
Yet we will certainly miss the v astn ess, g re atn ess a nd
goodness
of America and the many,
many
family, frien ds an d Christian people
who
have shared their liv es w ith us these
month
We
had
thought
to re turn
in
leisurely fashion by f re igh te r, but
Lykes
Lines,
the
only
company
hauling
passengers,suddenly
removed their ships from the Pacific and put
them on
the Atlantic run. That is certainly
not
a positive sign
for
Japan-U.S. t rade.
Also,
son Walter and family have decided to return to the U.S. in August fo r fur
lough. They had thought to
stay
five years but extreme t i redness and financial pressure
due
to th e 35
devalua t ion
o f th e U.S . dol lar makes t h e i r r e t u r n now adv i sab le . We will
arrive a
couple of
weeks before their departure so will have some family time togethe r and
to make the
transition.
Walter
and
Mary, children Shelley and
Trent,
will be making their
home
in
Murphysboro, Illinois, near h er p ar en ts . We will leave
the
car ,
which
we jointly
own
t h e r e
fo r
t h e i r
u s e .
Meanwhile, Pauline and 1
have had
many opportunities
to
share a
missionary witness
and vision.

and I ended April by participating in the first Faith Promise Ral ly
of the Mt. Washington Church
of
Christ, Cincinnati, where son Gregory i s a
deacon
and
chairman of the missions
committee.
Thus it
was
a special
pleasure
to
work
with him in
this
special
way. I
spoke
three
nights.

p ioneer s. The
grave of Archi
McLean, 1849-1920, caught my attention. He was head
of
the
Foreign
Christian
Missionary Society
fo r
years.
His
epitaph
read,
Every
miss ionary to
non-Christian lands in the en ti re h is to ry of this society

him. He
also
visited them all and prayed
fo r them

daily.

our booth.

packed
room

a
workshop
on
Developing
Evangelists.
(There were so many people
attending the
convention
that
ail workshops
packed.) All but
one
of
the
Maxey
brothers
and sisters were there. Elder brother, Tibbs, named Hono
hurchman for his
work
in
Black
evangelism. Daughters, Paula
from
Canada and
Hope from
Houston, joined u
o we
had
some family time
together.
