Maternity Services

• The NNUH is a centre of excellence providing a modern maternity service to both high and low risk mothers and their babies .

• The maternity service is provided collaboratively by midwives, obstetricians & general practitioners.

Some Facts & Figures

• 5120 births in 2004.• 150 home births• 1196 caesarean sections• 2 sets of triplets• 83 sets of twins• 68 water births• Patch covered by the NNUH service =1200

square miles. • Average mileage of a community midwife = 7000

miles per year.

Recruitment & Retention of Midwives

• We have 134 whole time equivalent (WTE) midwives in post , supported by 35(WTE) nursing assistants.

• The national shortage of midwives is being felt locally and regionally.
