Product Data Sheet TILEGUARD™ Anti-Fracture Membrane Underlayment PRODUCT NAME Tileguard™
MANUFACTURER Polyguard Products, Inc. Ennis, TX 75119 (214) 515-5000 www.polyguard.com
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION BASIC USES Tileguard™ is a composite membrane of fabric and rubberized asphalt, 40 mils in thickness. This elastomeric, self-adhesive membrane is wound on cores with a disposable silicone coated release sheet. Tileguard is used under tile. The material is elastomeric and strong, so it can absorb stress caused by concrete cracking, helping to prevent cracks in the subfloor from appearing in the tile surface above. Tileguard can be installed over a variety of subflooring surfaces. Used underneath ceramic or brick flooring with thin or thick tile setting materials. Tile floors with Tileguard on the subfloor will not only be less subject to cracking, they will also make the home quieter, warmer, and drier. ISO 9001 QUALITY CERIFICATION Polyguard Products, Inc. is the first manufacturer in any of its markets, to receive this international certification for quality systems used in both manufacturing and new product development. TECHNICAL DATA See physical properties table INSTALLATION SURFACE PREPARATION The subfloor shall be clean, dry, and dust free. Non- moving cracks greater than 3/16-inch: should be filled prior to application. Apply Shur-Tac™ Liquid Adhesive at the rate of approximately 500 ft² per gallon, being sure to stir the liquid adhesive prior to use. Allow liquid adhesive to dry to a slight tacky surface. Can be applied with brush, short nap roller or spray applied, but do not multi-coat or apply excess amounts.
MEMBRANE APPLICATION Cut roll to desired length. Remove the silicone coated release sheet immediately before application. Place the exposed adhesive bottom onto the subfloor, and smooth it into place as you go, trying to avoid air blisters. If blisters do occur, they can be slit and the membrane pressed flat. Use pressure from a roller or other wise to insure that the membrane is well conformed to the subfloor surface. If thin set mortar is used then it is recommended to use a latex modified / polymer modified thin set. Cool Weather: When applied in cool temperature conditions, the adhesive surface of Tileguard may lose a portion of its adhesiveness. The following measures will improve adhesion in cool installation conditions: 1. Keep rolls of membrane in a warm storage area prior to using. 2. On exterior surfaces, 650 LT Liquid Adhesive may be used. This material is not recommended for use on subfloor surfaces where water vapor transmission or head pressure exists (example shower stalls or shower pans). This material is not recommended where cracks exceed 3/8-inch, areas with horizontal movement greater than 1/4-inch or expansion joints that move vertically and horizontally. STORAGE Polyguard membranes should be handled and stored so as to prevent injury to packages. Material should be stored in a cool, dry place, kept from contact with earth and protected from weather. Materials should be stored in heated buildings during cold weather.

2.03 SYSTEM ACCESSORIES A. Surface Primer Roller-grade Adhesive: 1. Polyguard® 650 LT Liquid Adhesive: A rubber-based, tacky adhesive which is
specifically formulated to provide excellent adhesion. 2. Polyguard® California Sealant: A rubber-based sealant which is specifically
formulated to provide excellent adhesion. The VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content meets the South Coast Air Quality Management District regulations established under the February 1, 1991 version of Rule 1168 ©) (2) Adhesion and Sealant Applications. California Sealant is classified as an Architectural Sealant Primer Porous, with VOC of 527 g/L. Current SCAQMD regulations for this type sealant primer are 775 g/L.
3. Polyguard® Shur-Tac Liquid Adhesive: A polymer emulsion based adhesive which is
specifically formulated to provide excellent adhesion with Polyguard Waterproofing, Air Barrier, and Flashing Membrane systems under many kinds of surface conditions.
PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Examine surfaces to receive self-adhering membrane. Notify General Contractor if surfaces
are not acceptable. Do not begin surface preparation or application until unacceptable conditions have been corrected.
3.02 SURFACE PREPARATION A. Refer to manufacturer product literature for surface preparation requirements. Surfaces
should be structurally sound, free of voids, spalls, loose aggregate and sharp ridges. Remove dust, dirt, debris or any other foreign materials such as wax, oil, grease, or form release agents. Use repair materials that are acceptable to the sheet membrane manufacturer.
B. Cast-In-Place Concrete: 1. Normal-weight structural concrete must be allowed to cure a minimum of seven (7)
days. Light-weight concrete must be allowed to cure a minimum of fourteen (14) days. All concrete surfaces must be dry to the touch before proceeding with the installation of the anti-fracture membrane system.
2. Concrete must be sloped to provide proper drainage. 3. Moisture in floor must not exceed 3 lbs./1,000 s.f. Use Anhydrous Calcium test kit,
per ASTM F 1869-98. 4. If horizontal crack or joint exceeds 1/4" do not use. 5. Do not use if cracks or joints are out of plane, or over (dynamic) expansion joints. 6. Bi-level drains should be installed and have a minimum three (3) inch flange. Drains
should be installed with the flange flush and level with the surrounding concrete surface.
C. Other Substrates: 1. Include concrete cured 28 days, backer units per Tile Council of America
recommendations (TCA), radiant heated floors (per TCA), plywood (per TCA), Group 1 exterior grade CC plugged or better.
Polyguard Products 09-04-2015 09 34 00-5 Anti-Fracture Membrane Underlayment
3.03 APPLICATION A. Priming: 1. Apply primer to a cleaned, dust free surface. Apply by roller or spray. Apply
Polyguard® 650 LT Liquid Adhesive, California Sealant, or Shur-Tac Liquid Adhesive at a rate of 250-300 sq. ft. per gallon. Allow to dry per manufacturer directions.
B. Membrane Installation:
1. Install in strict accordance with manufacturer’s application procedures, precautions and limitations.
2. Roll the surface with a small hand type roller or hand pressure during application to
eliminate minor wrinkles and air pockets. 8. If an exterior project has potential for high moisture content in the slab, and
protection against water penetrating from the slab is required, the following additional steps must be taken.
a. Prime concrete with Polyguard® 650 LT Liquid Adhesive (solvent-
base), not the Polyguard® Shur-Tac Liquid Adhesive (water-base).
9. The use of Acrylic Latex modified thin set is recommended.
