Professional Development and Community Engagement (PDCE)
History | MMEd | Master of Museum Education State of the field – Professional status of museum educator.
Lack of graduate programs that service the profession.
Existing grad program in the field focus on museum studies - But, not
in Museum Education.
2007 – program development started with financial support from UBC with broad consultation with museum community in BC.
Launch of Pilot Program in Sept 2010 (MEd – Focus on Museum Education) to test and refine the program.
Ministry of Education Approval of new MMEd degree in August 2011.
Launch of new MMEd Program in September 2012. September 2014 will the 4th intake of the Program.

Program Objectives
• Explore and reconceptualize teaching and learning in non-classroom settings, and in particular, museums.
• Bring together museum educators, community-based educators and classroom teachers, and develop a professional network of educators to support and challenge your current and future practice
• Enhance opportunities for museum professionals and community
educators to further their thinking about the potential of museums as sites of learning.
• Provide graduate level qualification for those currently working or seeking to work as educators in informal settings and museums.

Program Outcomes
• Critically analyze dominant and alternative theories and discourses of learning and teaching in informal settings.
• Identify the influences of multiple perspectives (i.e., Local and International) in facilitating learning experiences in/within museums and learning communities.
• Develop learning opportunities to integrate learning within classrooms, and learning in informal settings such as museums and other informal learning sites.
• Develop tools to implement and sustain educational programs outside the traditional classroom, and analyze different approaches to teaching and program development.
• Develop skills and knowledge to understand and address the increasing complexities of issues facing informal learning settings.
Dr. Lisa McIntosh, PhD. Director of Learning at the HR MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her doctoral research focused on museum educators in their role as ‘teacher educators’ as they work with staff and volunteers in their quest to become museum educators. Lisa has more than 20 years working in museums as an educator, with experience in educational program development, interpretation, interpretive writing and exhibits, and staff development.

Dr. Alex F. de Cosson, Ph.D. is an a/r/tographer who has worked as a professional sculptor exhibiting nationally and internationally for over twenty-five years. instructor in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy and MET Programs. Alex passionately believes that art and art making, in the broadest possible terms, are central to a curriculum of well-being in the classroom and the Museum. His research interests are centered within arts-based, auto-biographical ways of knowing.
