The recent article of Dr. Pankaj Tandon in Numismatic Digest Vol 38 shows complete
comparative study on these coins and very much clears the doubt of Purugupta and
Chandragupta III being one and the same person. Now what important clarication he
clears is that why Purugupta have used the name Chandra on his coins? One possible
ustifying reason is that Purugupta wanting to wrap himself in the mantle of his
grandfathers glory. Because Chandragupta II also had done the same with his own
grandfather name. Given the precedent of one king taking the name of his grandfather,
it seems quite possible that Purugupta may have done the same especially if he felt
weak in the face of his powerful and heroic half-brother and felt that including his
glorious grandfathers name would emphasize his lineage and legitimacy over that of
his half-brother and would bring himself more glory.

The interesting point to note on this specimen is JHAR LEAF mark which usually
appears on the coins from the Rajputana states. The thought could be given to the point
that adoption of Jhar leaf is mainly because of showing the alliance between the Mughal
and Rajputs after Akbar got married to Heer Kunwari alias Jodha Bai. But bearing a
clear mint name Katak/Cuttack which is located on the other side again raises one more
question that why Jhar leaf in Katak mint coin.

there. Azar is the ninth month of Islamic calendar. The Agra mint issued Rupees in

Zeenat-e-Zewar couplet says the stamp of Mandu received on coin resplendent
beauty to ornament abide from the name Shah Nooruddin son of Shah Akbar.
One of the highest rarity and an important coin of Jahangir, oered for the rst
time in auction.
History of Mandu - Mandu urf Shadiabad is presently located in Mandavgadhin
the Mandavarea of the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh. The earliest reference to
Mandu is available in the Sanskrit inscription of 555 AD, which tells that Mandu was a
fortied city even in the 6th century BC.
It gained prominence in 10th & 11th century under the rule of Rajput Parmarswho
called it Mandavgarh, from whom the control was snatched by Khiljis in 1305 AD.
Then the famous ruler Allauddin Khiljinamed Mandav as Shadiabadwhich means
the city of happiness Anand Nagari. And towards the end of the 11th century it cameunder the sway of the Taranga kingdom.
Mandus Golden Age When Timur captured Delhi in the year 1401 AD, the Afghan
Dilawar Khan then governor of Malwa sets up his own little kingdom and the Ghuri
dynasty was established. His son Hoshang Shah, shifted the capital from Dhar to Mandu
and raised it to its greatest splendor. His son and third and last ruler of Ghuri dynasty,
Mohammed, ruled for just one year till his poisoning by the militaristic Mohammed
Khalji.
Mandu under the Mughals and Baz Bahadur Khan-In the year AH 941/ 1534 AD
Humayun attacked on one of his major rivals Bahadur Shahof Gujaratwho had
annexed the province to refuge in Mandu and Bahadur Shahwho was also aided by
Portuguese was defeated by Humayun. Humayun relaxed at Mandu for a while before
leaving.
Humayunlost the kingdom to the Mallu Khan who was an oce of the Khalji Dynasty.
Ten years in the continuation of the feuds and invasion followed resulting in the end of
Baz Bahadur Khan emerging on the top spot and ruled the area from AD 1555-1562.
Hemu Vikramaditya the Commander-in-Chief and Prime Minister of Suri Army
under the reign of Adil Shah Suriwas sent to quell the rebellions and Hemu attacked
on Mandu which led the eeing of Baz Bahadur Khan from Mandu. Hemu appointed
his governor and moved on to conquer other parts and in the meanwhile Baz Bahadur
again came back to Mandu.
In 1561 AD Akbarsarmy led by Adham Khanand Pir Muhammad Khanattacked
Malwaand defeated Baz Bahadurin the battle of Sarangpuron 29 March 1561. One
of the reasons for Adham Khans attack seems to be his love for Rani Roopmati.
Rani Roopmati poisoned herself to death on hearing the news of fall of Mandu.
Baz Bahadur ed to Khandesh. Akbarsoon recalled Adham Khanand made over
command to Pir Muhammad. Pir Muhammadattacked Khandeshand proceeded up
to Burhanpurbut he was defeated by a coalition of three powers: Miran Mubarak
Shah II of Khandesh, Tufal Khan of Berar and Baz Bahadur of Malwa. Pir
Muhammad died while retreating. The confederate army pursued the Mughals and
drove them out of Malwa. Baz Bahadur regained his kingdom for a short period.
Finally in the year 1562 AD, Akbar sent another troop of army led by Abdullah Khan,
the Uzbeg wo nally defeated Baz Bahadur Khan. This time he ed to Chittorin
Rajputana. Baz Bahadurremained a fugitive at a number of courts till he surrendered
in November, 1570 to Akbarat Nagaurand then he joined Akbars service.
Jahangirvisited Mandu in the 11th year of his reign and it is said with some sources
that the Jal Mahalin Mandu was built by Jahangirbut some reference shows that it
was built by Khaljisin 1534 AD and Jahangir only stayed here for six months

Zeno has two examples of early strike mohurs but none of them matches to
the style of this specimen which may conclude that these are of even early
strike than o those listed in Zeno.
Another important feature is that this specimen is of similar type of those rupees
struck in the very early reign of Shah Jahan where he would have adopted the features
from those of rupees. Mohurs of Early Style are not cataloged in KM and probably
struck with the designs adopted from those of Jahangirs as this device clearly shows
the beautiful engraving and oral designs overall on the coin. Probably struck at Surat
mint because head of persian wau and ta is visible on the coin.
Probably being oered for the rst time in auction sales.

Murad Bakhsh was the fourth and youngest son of Shah Jahan. He was born in
1624 A.D. and when Shah Jahan died, he was the governor of Gujarat. Being
impetuous and impatient, he wished to exclude his eldest brother Dara from the
throne. On the death of Shah Jahan, he plundered Surat and proclaimed himself
emperor, striking coins in his own name. He was persuaded by Aurangzeb
to join forces and partition the empire, but Aurangzeb eventually made him
prisoner and he was beheaded in 1661 A.D.

Exceptionally bold strike, very tough to get in such condition.
Ajmer was an important place as far back as the 10th and 11th centuries, when
it was the headquarters of the Tomara dynasty, later in the 12th century it sent
its representative Prithvi Raj to oppose Muhammad bin Sam. In the days of
Akbar it had acquired special sanctity as the burial place of the Muhammadan
saint Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti(RA).
Under Jahangir Ajmer became a mint for gold and silver also and from it
issued the well known gold coins portraying Jahangir seated with a wine cup
in his hand. Shahjahan must have coined very little money at Ajmer, for only
a single rupee is known but the mint was revived by Aurangzeb in or about the
30th year of his reign and was working regularly up to its close. The issues
were almost same of the rupee, gold coins from this mint are very rare. The
obverse contains the usual couplet mihr munir, on the reverse Ajmer is

Agra was always the important place as it was the capital of Mughal Empire, later it
was renamed as Akbarabad for marking the glories of Akbar the great. The normal
mohurs and rupees of Shah Jahan II were struck at Akbarabad using the dies which
were broader than the planchet. But this specimen clearly shows the dotted border circle
around on both sides.
Ra-ud-Daula Shah Jahan IIwas the elder brother of Ra-ud-Darjatand wasone of several contenders who claimed the throne upon the death of Farrukhsiyar. He
was installed as emperor by the sayyid brothers who killed Ra-ud-Darjat.He was amere puppet and was removed shortly after his installation as emperor. He assumed the
title Shah Jahan I and ruled as Mughal emperor for three months and twenty eight days
only. His gold coins are all very rare, much rarer than those of Ra ud-Darjat(Notesfrom Asar-us-Sanadeed, Vol-1 and page 246/47)
