Morrisons brings back staffed express checkouts
Morrisons is re-introducing staffed express
checkouts to its supermarkets this week in a move it says will offer customers a quick and
personal service, and more choice at checkouts.
The express lanes will serve shoppers with ten items or less. Morrisons said it was responding
to customer feedback and cited figures from Kantar Worldpanel which gauge the average basket size in the UK at 11 items costing £15,
with shoppers visiting stores approximately five times per week.

M&S launches “Cook with M&S” app for Apple Watch
“Cook with M&S”, an app that takes consumers through every step of cooking from purchasing to plating, is to feature on the new Apple
Watch, which launched last week.
The app will offer, appropriately for a watch, features and instructions based on cooking time for individual recipes, as well as
the ability to “tick off” grocery items as the wearer shops.
“when we first developed Cook With M&S, we were aiming to provide not only recipe inspiration, but a tool that offers practical
help in the kitchen,” said Peter Wright, product developer for M&S Digital Labs. “While currently only in its infancy in terms of
mainstream consumer use, over the next year the role of wearable tech in customers’ everyday lives is set to grow as developments like
the Apple Watch come to market.”
Cook with M&S achieved 150,00 downloads in the first three months of its launch for more traditional devices.

Retail spend falls slightly despite yearly rise
Retail sales continued to grow for the 24th consecutive month in March – up 4.2% year on year, the latest
estimates from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate. However, a small drop was recorded month-on-
month, with spending down 0.3% from February.
The uplift means the two-year period has been the longest of sustained year-on-year growth since May 2008, when
there were 31 consecutive monthly increases ahead of the global recession.
The certification follows the supermarket’s move to make all its own label speciality baking sugars Fairtrade certified in November last year. Coincidentally, the move comes as the Co-op steps back from its commitment to Fairtrade.
Since Waitrose started selling Fairtrade bananas in 2007, the supermarket has – apart from sugar and chocolate –
converted its tea, coffee and wine.

Kopparberg to bring Sweden’s favourite speciality beer to UK
Kopparberg is following last month’s launch of its first beer,
Fagerhult, by bringing Sweden’s leading speciality beer brand Hoga Kusten to the UK next month.
The 5.3% ABV beer is a blend of two parts lager with one part
ale, and described as having a “full-bodied malty taste with elements of apricot, Swedish molasses bread and orange peel”.
Zeunerts Brewery was founded in 1857, and was bought by
Kopparberg in 2002.

Stella Artois lands official Ascot partnership
Ascot Racecourse has signed up Stella Artois as its ‘Official Beer and Cidre’. The venue joins a set of brand partners for Stella Artois that includes Wimbledon, The Open and Cannes Film
Festival.
As well as seeing Stella’s lager and cider served at the racecourse, the partnership will be supported by outdoor, OR
and digital activity.
“Stella Artois has a strong appreciation for events with a rich history and rituals,” said Phil Pick, marketing manager for Stella Artois at AB InBev. “The care Ascot takes in every detail of the racecourse experience mirrors the care we take in the crafting

Tesco unveils new bonus scheme in ‘Turnaround’ plan
Tesco staff are to get rewards of up to 5% of their annual income if they help CEO Dave Lewis meet his targets for
recovery.
The announcement came as Tesco declared staff would get bonuses of up to £2,000 in June, after what the retailer
described as “early signs of improvement in performance” at the retailer.
The payout, under its Shares in Success scheme, is worth 1% of
annual earnings for staff who joined the company before February last year and will be capped at the maximum of
£2,000.
However, Tesco said it planned to offer bonuses five times this size under the new scheme to be revealed later in the year.

Tesco appoints high-flying new brand director
Tesco has turned to a high flyer credited for rejuvenating the image of British Airways and Barclays Bank – as well as creating the world’s biggest food website brand – to try to lift its image
in the UK.
Michelle McEttrick, who has been appointed group brand director, is a former director of BBH, the advertising agency
brought in by Lewis in January to take on the retailer’s £110m advertising account.
At BBG she led the BA, Barclays and Barclaycard accounts at
the agency before joining the bank as chief marketing officer, later becoming managing director of brand and marketing until
her departure last year.
