Dear Teachers,
This is your one stop March shop! It has everything you need and
more! Each question relies completely on text evidence. I have seen
teachers in dozens of classrooms implement procedures and techniques
to help their students get closer to the author of text. Each teacher
has their own style. We are all unique and interpret our professional
learning experiences differently. From the ways we read with a pen to
annotating in the margins. Teachers everywhere implement different
procedures--- all of which have the same result--- creating students
who are reading closely and are text dependent.

Notes About Close Reading: The Common Core Standards naturally lend to close reading. The goal is to have students read closely without adult scaffolding. This goal can only be
achieved through practice and application. Do allow for challenge, but please minimize frustration by going over any extremely difficult vocabulary. Consider teaching structural elements of any difficult vocabulary. Look at the root
words, prefixes, and suffixes. These are elements you may or may not want to address prior to reading the passage. Note: Take care when addressing vocabulary. It only takes ONE word to give away the hidden message.
The question pages included with each passage are useful, but not essential for
Close Reading. The same goes for the text coding chart. It is helpful, but not a requirement.
To save ink, I simply write RI in front of the standard being addressed. You can
consider these questions acceptable for each grade level: Second, Third, and Fourth.
For standards that are not similar across the board, I provide the grade level and the standard.

Notes About the Question Pages: You will see standards next to each question.
Many standards are similar in grades second, third, and fourth.
Informational Text Three Day Guide
These are ideas to use. Teachers implement close reading procedures in many different ways. Some like to focus on one standard each reading.
This is why I have included the graphic organizers. However, most stick with how the Common Core Standards are structured to lend to Close Reading.
Each day you will focus on one category of the Common Core Standards.
Day One: Key Ideas and Details Day Two: Craft and Structure
Day Three: Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Optional Day Four and/or Five: Writing Response or CCSS Practice using graphic organizers.

Before Reading: - “Hook” students with an anticipatory set. Give them something to make a connection to. Grab their
attention or motivation to read. The hook can happen through asking questions about prior experiences. You can even use an object or picture.
- Quick preview of the text without too much front-loading. The term front-loading is referring to theauthor’s purpose, points, or main idea. These must be discovered through reading.
- If necessary, some phonics or structural analysis would be beneficial for success. This can be a quick mini-lesson you can fit it into guided reading. Limit student frustration by reading aloud difficult words. However, do allow for challenge and perseverance. We want to help students develop a love of reading.
Engagement Tips: - Use the text coding chart on the next page to implement a structure into your reading routines.
- Have students complete the paragraph focus sheet. It gives them extra practice of going back into
the text and helps them get the gist of what the text says.
- Also consider having students complete the Key Ideas and Details page after their first reading.
You can also use the questions for discussion.

March is the third month of the year. Did you know that March
used to be the first month of the year? Years ago, many calendars
started with March. March has changed position, but it still
represents a new beginning.
First of all, March was chosen to start the year because of the
season. Our ancestors chose to start the year with the beginning
of spring. What better month to begin with? March is when many
places begin to see the return of trees, animals, and plants after the
dormancy of winter.
Although March was the start of the year, authorities changed
it. The people in charge added January and February and placed
March third. Scientifically, March had to be moved to the third
month of the year to balance the calendar. Times, seasons, and
calendars would not match if it was not moved.
Today, March serves as a signal for the end of
winter. It is the beginning of the spring equinox.
The northern part of the Earth begins to receive
more sun. This warms the soil for things to grow.
Plants, animals, and insects will come to life. Crops
will be planted. March is the beginning of change.

March is the third month of the year on the Gregorian
calendar. But, did you know that March used to be the first month
of the year? Years ago, many calendars marked March as the first
month. March has changed positions on the calendar, but it still
remains a month for the beginning of change.
To begin with, our ancestors chose a great month to start
the beginning of change. People from long ago used March
because life seemed to spring into action with the return of trees,
plants, and animals from dormancy.
Although March was a beautiful month to start the year, it
was changed by authorities. The people in charge added January
and February. Scientifically, March had to be moved to the third
month to balance the calendar or times would not match from year
to year.
Today, people continue to use the beauty
of March to serve as a signal for the end of winter.
March is the beginning of the spring equinox. Many
plants, animals, and insects will come to life. People
will do spring cleaning and start planting crops.
March is a month of change even after being
bumped to third place on the calendar.

Answer Key For Questions Per Common Core Category
Daylight Savings Time Questions Grouped by Common Core Category
Use the list for discussion during small or whole group lessons. The questions are on the student worksheets. Answer key is included below.
Key Ideas and Details 1. According to the text, Daylight Savings Time is when time changes in March so there are more daylight hours. It is also called D.S.T. and
literally means what it says.2. The main idea of the text is that Daylight Savings Time was created for many reasons like equaling out the times of daylight for the
seasons of winter and summer, giving people more daylight, and conserving energy.3. Daylight Savings Time was created to fix the times with daylight between summer and winter. It helps people with giving them more time
outside and conserves energy.4. The connection or relationship between Daylight Savings Time and electricity is how it conserves energy by giving people more time during
the day to get things done and turn the lights on later when it gets dark.5. The connection or relationship between the planet and Daylight Savings Time is how the planet’s tilt or changes in seasons creates different
times for daylight so D.S.T was created to fix this and make daylight time more equal.6. The difference between the amount of daylight hours of the winter and summer is daylight is shorter in winter and longer during summer.
Craft and Structure 1. The meaning of the word abbreviation is to give a name another meaning by using the letters to shorten the word in the way Daylight
Savings is abbreviated D.S.T.2. The word literal is when something means what is says in the way Daylight Savings Time means to save time for daylight.3. The author’s point of view about Daylight Savings Time is that it helps people by giving them more light to play outside and get things done
before it gets dark.4. The author uses underlines and italics to help the reader recognize and identify key words throughout the text.
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas 1. The picture helps the reader understand the text by giving visual representations of time and how it changes. It also explains in the captions
exactly when the times change for the month of March with Spring Forward.2. The author provides evidence to support the first sentence of the second paragraph by explaining how the daylight of the planet changes
with the seasons of summer and winter.3. The last sentence of the second paragraph is supported by the author’s point about how D.S.T. gives people an extra hour of daylight in
winter. This gives people more time to go outside and have more daylight to get things done and conserve electricity.4. The author supports the point made in the last paragraph by explaining how D.S.T. was started in the 1900’s when electricity started being
used by many people and D.S.T gave people an extra hour of daylight to turn the lights on later and save energy.
