In the business of making you
March is a fun month at Family & MWR! We’re enjoying the last of the
snow-centered trips with the Outdoor Recreation program and looking forward
to spring with special events — Kids’ Fest and Earth Day are just around the
corner.
You don’t have to spend a lot of green to have fun with us! Libraries and
Armed Forces Community Service offer free workshops on everything from
crocheting to finding your inner super spouse. Plus, there are free or relatively
inexpensive classes through the Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field (and
you’ll find coupons for savings on sculpting and Zentangle classes in this
month’s issue).
For a rundown on unique benefits of being a Family & MWR patron at JBLM,
turn to this month’s feature “It’s your lucky day month year!” on page 12.
We consider it our privilege to serve you in our restaurants, recreation centers,
gyms, child development centers and each of our locations. We consider ourselves
lucky to have you as customers and hope you enjoy the programs and events at
JBLM. Please take a moment to share your feedback with me at ice.disa.mil.
It’s all about the green this month! Join Family & MWR at great events

Chewing the fat — important in a well-balanced dietBy Katie Willet, MPH, Health Educator at the JBLM Army Wellness Center
Living a healthy lifestyle can help reduce or prevent many health problems, promote a higher quality of life and improve longevity — a well-balanced diet is a major element. One particularly important area for a balanced diet is fat content. • Trans-fats are typically added to processed foods and aren’t desirable. Trans-fats, such as
hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, margarine and shortening, should be eliminated from the diet1. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration determined that partially hydrogenated oils aren’t safe for use in food and has issued a ban effective 20182.
• Saturated fats are generally found in animal products such as meat, butter and cheese but are also found in certain nut or tropical oils1. Saturated fat should account for 10 percent or less of total calorie intake per day3. The American Heart Association’s guideline is no more than 5–6 percent of total calorie intake per day4. Some saturated fat products come with other health benefits — coconut oil has been found to help reduce inflammatory response.
• Unsaturated fats are generally found in oils, vegetables and nuts and are considered goodsources of fat1. Unsaturated fats are broken down into three categories: monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat and omega-3 fatty acids1 While these types of fats are the most desirable version of fat, it’s important to remember that fat should typically only account for approximately 20 percent of your total daily calorie intake3.We commonly associate the use of fat in the body as a way to retain heat, cushion the
body and maintain certain esthetics; however, there are many other important roles. A cer-tain amount of fat is key in the development of a number of hormones, the body’s ability to build muscle and for the absorption and use of fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients. Too much of the wrong kind of fat can increase cholesterol (a major risk factor for heart disease). The high-calorie content of fat can also lead to issues with being overweight or obese.
The JBLM Armed Forces Wellness Center is an excellent resource — find out about baseline body composition (fat versus muscle), test your resting metabolic rate to help determine caloric needs, and learn about exercise, nutrition, stress and tobacco cessation. For details, stop by Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center or call 253-966-3757.

You may think, by this description, we’re watching a manners or language class unfold. In reality, this is a type of language — the language the human body speaks as it connects muscle and mind, movement and breathing. Students are entering boxing class at SKIESUnlimited, greeting Coach Lydell Spry.
Spry has an extensive background in Olympic-style boxing, having started boxing at the age of 13 in Los Angeles. He boxed for 1.5 years before playing football through high school and college. He returned to boxing age at 20 upon entering the Army. After assignments in the states and overseas, he landed in Washington where he’s been a boxing coach off- and on-base since 1997.
Coach Spry says, “I come from a pretty rough neighborhood in California, and I found that boxing was very helpful for me to stay out of trouble. If it helped a person like myself, it can help others. Boxing teaches kids to be accountable, responsible and reliable,” he says.
Wendy Vila, one of Spry’s first boxing students at JBLM 17 years ago, visited the coach and participated in a class last month. “The toughest part about growing up as a mili-tary child is moving from school to school. When I moved to Washington, I was 15 and at my second high school. … The Fort Lewis [now JBLM] boxing gym is where my love for boxing began,” she says. “Coach Spry inspires his fighters to believe in themselves and to always keep improving, to have faith and to always persevere despite obstacles.”
Spry also teaches his students the importance of communication. “We bring them the basic skills so that everyone can understand what they’re trying to articulate, for themselves and to others,” Coach Spry says.
He hopes to teach his students to be thinkers, “to think on their feet with the littlest amount of effort. But it requires practice, practice, practice!” he says.
If your child is looking for a new class to “practice,” and you wouldn’t mind them fine-tuning manners along the way, enroll them in the SKIESUnlimited Boxing Academy at JBLMcyssRegistration.com. Coach Spry will be awaiting with a smile, inspiring language and a lot of heart.
Keep an eye out for new parent-and-me boxing workshops and boxercise classes. Children must be registered with CYSS to enroll in SKIESUnlimited classes.

stand in line outside their
classroom ready to greet
their teacher — with eye

of “good afternoon” and
“Hello, sir.” They’re
reminded to make eye

and say “excuse me” when
needed. Language is very
important to their teacher
in day-to-day interactions,
as well as in his class.

Working for you Army Emergency Relief is there when you need help
A private nonprofit organization to
relieve distress of Soldiers and their Fami-
lies, Army Emergency Relief offers finan-
cial assistance in the form of interest-free
loans and grants in support of a variety
of needs. AER now provides all Soldiers,
regardless of rank, direct access to apply
for AER assistance except for those
Soldiers who are in Initial Entry Training
(BCT/OSUT) and have less than one year
time in service. Direct access without the
commander/first sergeant review will be
limited to two assistance requests (loan or
grant) within a 12-month period, regard-
less of rank (sourced from AERhq.org).
Each year, JBLM participates in the AER
Campaign to help raise funds to provide
this financial assistance. We invite you to
participate! For more information, visit
AERhq.org or call 253-967-1453.
Air Force Aid Society offers financial assistance
The Air Force Aid Society is a private
nonprofit organization established to
support the mission of the Air Force by
relieving financial distress of Air Force
members and their Families, assisting
with education goals and improving
quality of life through proactive programs.
The basic philosophy of AFAS as-
sistance is to meet immediate needs
in an emergency situation as a step
toward a lasting resolution.
The AFAS is one of four affiliates of
the Air Force Assistance Fund. Air Force
members are encouraged to contribute
through payroll deduction/allotment in
support of the Airmen helping Airmen
philosophy on which AFAS was founded.
The campaign runs annually from early
February through early May. Air Force
members interested in participating
should contact their unit AFAF manager.
More information can be found at afas.

financial readiness Don’t throw away your tax refund
With tax season upon us, we may be
looking forward to that “large” refund
check from the IRS. It may be tempting
to splurge on a vacation or spend it on a
new TV, but that refund could be put to
better use, like improving your overall
financial situation.
According to the IRS, the average refund
in 2015 was worth $3,539! That could have
been almost $300 a month in your pay-
check. When you get a large refund, you’re
simply getting back what you overpaid.
Your goal should be to pay nothing or get
nothing back at tax time. You may need to
adjust your W-4 to have the proper amount
withheld from your paycheck.
If you receive a large refund this year,
consider:
• Paying down high-interest debt, such as
credit cards.
• Using it to build a much-needed emer-
gency savings fund.
This is also a good time of year to
evaluate your savings goals and to make a
commitment to start a savings plan. One
way to get started: MilitarySaves.org.
