Secondly,eachoftheartworksinthefestivalofferedartisticresearchintothecontext,historyandmaterialityofthesitesused,proposingalternative,albeittemporaryusesforthem.Theartworksdemonstratedhowsoundartinterventionscanactivatesoundinurbanspace,andpotentiallytransformtheperceptionofthosespaces,inseveralways:

• Investigatingacousticqualitiesofoutdoorspaces:rangingfromrecordingsofTompkins’voicein600HalmstadSongsamplifiedandprojecteddownriver,toLiljedahlsoundingoutdifferentcomponentsofthecraneinEchoofIron.

• Drawingattentiontoexistingphysicalfeatures:literally,byinvitingpeopletoseekthesourceofsoundsemergingfromanuninhabitedisland(Magnarsson’sRabbitIslandRave),orbyacousticallyactivatingadisusedpieceofindustrialinfrastructure(asinLiljedahl’sEchoofIron).

5Festivalknowledgeinformingurbanplanning

Thecreationofthiskindofsonicspatialintelligenceisonlyafirststep,however:thereisnoguaranteethatitwillbeusedinanymeaningfulway,notleastbecausethefestivaloperatedoutsidetraditionalplanningandurbandevelopmentprocesses.However,IwouldarguethatthecreativeapproachesseeninSoundatNissanareinstructiveforthosewithresponsibilityforplanninganddesigningnewurbanspaces,toencourageanurbanismthatisinformedbysonicexperience:

• Analysisandmappingcarriedoutinadvanceofthefestivalenabledthecuratorsto“score”whatwouldhappen,whereandwhen.

• Throughsoundwalksandthepresenceofsoundartinterventionsinthecity,peoplecanbesupportedtobuildtheirsonicliteracy,andtoexpresswhattheylike,ordon’t,aboutagivensoundorsonicexperience–andwhy.
