M3 Act Reflex Arc Model 2/15
•Nerve cells that are specialized to react to physical and chemical changes in their surroundings.
Neuron
Reflex Arc •Simplest of nerve pathways; carry out our reflexes.Copy figure 11.7a (p. 393 here)
Parts of a Reflex Arc (Table 11.2 p. 396)Part Description Function
Receptor Receptor end of a dendrite or
receptor cell in a organ.
Sensitive to a specific type internal or external
change.
Sensory Neuron
Dendrite, Cell Body, and Axon
of Sensory Neuron.
Transmits nerve impulse from receptor to brain or
spinal cord.
Interneuron Dendrite, cell body, and axon
of neuron within the brain or spinal cord.
Serves as a processing center; conducts nerve impulse from sensory
neuron to motor neuron.
Motor Neuron Dendrite, cell body, and axon
of motor neuron.
Transmits nerve impulse from the brain or spinal cord out to an effector.
Effector A muscle or gland
Responds to stimulation by the motor neuron and
produces the reflex or behavioral action.

Reflex Arc Model Setup
Each partnership needs to put together the following clay materials:
2 Walnut balls of white clay 1 Walnut size terra cotta Extrude one tube of blue, pink, and terra
cotta clay. Roll a Marble size ball of orange clay.Wipe hands and surfaces in-between colors!
Build me a Reflex Arc!
Using the clay materials you have prepared, build me an example of a reflex arc on your cardstock. Make sure to at least label the five parts of the reflex arc you took notes on in class!
We will build the vertebrae and spinal cord together and then you will be on your own!
Chapter 11 in your text should be a big help!
1. Use table 11.7 in your text (p.415) to create your own table describing the characteristics and functions of the 4 principle parts of the brain: Cerebrum Diencephalon Brainstem Cerebellum
2. After you create your table, use figure 11.15a (p. 402) as a guide and sketch a cross section of the brain labeling these four principle parts.
