What is MH?• Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a potentially fatal, inherited

disorder usually associated with the administration of certain general anesthetics and/or the drug succinylcholine. The disorder is due to an acceleration of metabolism in skeletal muscle. The signs of MH include muscle rigidity, rapid heart rate, high body temperature, muscle breakdown and increased acid content. Immediate treatment with the drug dantrolene usually reverses the signs of MH. The underlying defect is abnormally increased levels of cell calcium in the skeletal muscle.

• There is mounting evidence that some patients will also develop MH with exercise and/or on exposure to hot environments. Without proper and prompt treatment with dantrolene sodium, mortality is extremely high. The best way to protect yourself, your family, your patients and facility, is to be prepared before it's too late.

•MALIGNANT HYPERTHERMIA (MH) CARTS

▫ MH is a rare but potentially fatal reaction to anesthesia that causes sudden and drastic INCREASE of body temperature.

▫ Treatment protocol is to quickly apply Cold packs, administer appropriate drug.

▫ Having Supplies in cart close to surgical area is recommended best practice. Cart is portable, close at hand, organized

•MALIGNANT HYPERTHERMIA CARTS• Commonly these carts utilize a dorm-room type refrigerator for

the cold supplies

• Harloff did do this, had various supply and quality problems

• Decided to incorporate a lab-quality refrigerator – Use Follett # 2

• Higher price, higher quality, more consistent temperature control

• Added ability to secure the supplies, visible temperature readout

• We also offer shell of cart for hospital to install separately ordered fridge

Dorm “type” systems often fail to meet clinical standards.

Voice of the Customer Specific to MH, the cart needs to contain items specified by MHAUS  http://www.mhaus.org/ The Good:The three drawers were a better fit than the two drawer carts other units have. The refrigerator is large enough for IV fluid and Insulin.Cart handles are great. What I might change:

• Med drawer could have a divided tray or adjustable dividers (in fact, I had to add this to drawers above).• The side holders could be changed.

▫ One holder could be made wider as to hold a typical school size binder, typically used as monthly/daily check list.▫ I have not found a use for the basket.▫ The sharps container holder is not necessary in our environment.

• All considered, this is a rarely used but high necessary cart.  In my mind ‘less is more’.  It needs to contain all necessary items, but be as concise as possible so as to be easily stored.

• Drawers need cinch lock hasps.  This is a cart Joint commission will look for and at.  Needs daily checks like a crash cart.  Hasps and cinch locks show the cart is kept in ready state. (we added these).

• Key lock x2 unnecessary as a code cart.• We are wirelessly monitoring temp.  I do not know if that  is a feature you may want to add, or how it would link to other networks.•  • Hope this helps.  We like the cart.
