PURPOSE
To determine the efficiently of permeability for the rough grain soil.
APPARATUS

PROCEDURE
1. Make sure tank have fixed column (Fixed column controlled by overflow
pipe tank)
2. Open valve fully and record time of necessity for water cater to cylinder to
level 500ml. Take the reading of manometer for the column A and B. Make
as much as 3 times.
3. Repeat step 2 with ½ valve open, and ¾ valve open to continue this
experiment.
4. Decide the efficiently of soil permeability.

QUESTION
1. Why this experiment important in civil engineering works?
This test important in civil engineering works because intend to determine
permeability a said soil. Apart from that, it also important to calculate
permeability the structure of the soil.
2. What would be happen to K value if :
a. Valve opening change
b. Cross sectional area until A soil sample change
c. Flow distance between A and B change
3. Comments And Conclusions
- There are too many corrections when this experiment goes on. Besides
that, certain equipment are too old to use on this experiment.
- The conclusion is the permeability of soil actually important to be
determined before a construction/building built on the site.
4. Compare K value that you achieve with K value that may be obtained from reference book.
What soil type that can be concluded?
There are two kinds of standard that could be followed namely BS1377 :
part 5: 1990 Determination Of Permeability By The Constant Head Methods
and US Standards ASTMD 2434-Permibility Of Granular Soils (Constant
Head) . This both methodologies only suitable for rough soil, especially
sand. For a squelchy soil (silty clay) on the other hand, permeability can be
obtained with use this column test decline method.
