he Northern Peru Birding Route stretches from the Pacific coast in the Tumbesian region to the lowlands of the Amazon, crossing the lowest

part of the entire Andean chain and the arid Marañón valley. The complex geology of the region combined with its climate that is influenced by two major ocean currents and the Amazon basin has lead to the development of many diverse habitats, which support a staggering diversity of bird species including many endemics. The route spans 9 Endemic Birds Areas harbouring 145 restricted-range species. A total of more than 1,250 species have been recorded along the route including 67 globally threatened species. 52 sites in the region have been designated as Important Bird Areas.
