STEM is something that people are hearing about everywherenowadays However you may have a few questions as to whatexactly STEM is and if itrsquos something you could be interested in
I have currently been President of the STEM Club here at Tri-C Westfor some time now and here are some common questions that I amalways asked
bull What does STEM mean STEM stands for Science TechnologyEngineering and Mathematics Although it is true that you have tohave a strong foundation in both math and science to be a STEMmajor you should never feel discouraged because you arenrsquot a straight Astudent in these subjects If you have an interest in STEM you should explore it and see if itrsquos a goodfit for you
bull Is STEM interesting or just lots of math The STEM Club has members from all different parts ofSTEM and itrsquos always a new adventure We are all at different levels in our education and we all learnfrom each other Thatrsquos just part of the experience A great example of this is the project we areworking on this semester We decided on building a hydroponic garden to grow tea leaves None of ushad any idea on how to do this but we started researching the topic and designing what our gardenwould look like We had to scrap several of our original ideas because we kept finding problems in ourdrawings Part of STEM is solving problems through creation and innovation and we had to do thismany times as we ran into problems in designing and building our project I myself didnrsquot understandsome of the problems we had to overcome and my team had to explain it to me Even though I wasthe leader I had to know when to ask for help from those around me
bull Irsquom not good at math or science but am still interested in STEM What should I do WellSTEM isnrsquot just about numbers There are many branches of STEM that people overlook An exampleof this was when a student asked if there were any STEM programs where she could use her drawingabilities I told her she could become a CAD Computer-Aided Design designer and use her artistictalent in the world of engineering
Having a STEM major opens up endless possibilities in careers Choosing a major in STEM can bechallenging but it is important to remember that you often have to work hard for the best things in lifeWith all the different majors in STEM Irsquom sure you can find a STEM program that is the right fit for you

In this edition of The Magnet students and staff share ways they are getting involved across the campus college and community and the benefits of getting involved The accomplishments of TRiO graduates and participants are celebrated and great suggestions are given for defining and reaching your own goals
Throughout life we update our goals as we become clear about our interests and strengths and continuously look to set new goals There is no ldquoone best wayrdquo that fits every situation but you will want to consider some tried and true practices used by those who regularly reach their goals Here are some you will want to do now
Number one is identifying your priorities then refining them into goals Next is committing to investing the time needed to achieve these goals Being organized and managing your time are very important Identify your resources and support systems and purposefully pursue new resources This is where greater involvement in college and community can be used to boost your resources Join a club participate in student activities volunteer

Last year Trio SSS attended the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) This yearrsquos 42nd CIFF has once again exceeded all expectations Dr Melanie Ms Petra and six Trio students attended the event and saw An Act of Defiance
The movie is a historical dramatization of the events leading up to and including the 1963 trial which sentenced Nelson Mandela and 7 other anti-apartheid revolutionaries to life in prison The attendees were able to absorb the sacrifice of those men defended by Bram Fischer the lead lawyer who placed his and his familyrsquos existence on the line in South Africarsquos brutal regime His acts of courage resistance and honor along with Mandela standing up to the systemic injustice by pleading lsquoNot Guiltyrsquo laid the groundwork for the end of apartheid
Lunch at Susyrsquos Soups and Deli was also a repeat of delicious food and great conversation Soups sandwiches and wraps helped us settle our stomachs as we discussed the ignorance and prejudice of South Africa at a time when the USA was battling its own legacy of slavery and subsequent inequalities We were appalled by the incredible hatred and astounded by the heroism of the men of South Africa

The life of a college student requires most to juggle completing course work time with our family and social interaction with friends According to numerous research studies your college journey may be more meaningful when you are connecting to other scholars through both social and community involvement
Cuyahoga Community College students are afforded numerous opportunities for engagement As a TRIO Student Support Services participant your extended support team has been both intentional and deliberate to create on and off campus activities for you Exploring other colleges along with community assets like our regionrsquos museums is both educational and fun
According to a recent survey by the Community College Review an online site that ldquoprovides free detailed profiles of community colleges across the USArdquo recently noted that participation in extracurricular events expands students networking fun and deepens learning Many college students also engage in volunteer activities for example gathering items for the campus food pantry taught them serving others impacted their personal and professional growth
In summary participating in activities outside of your class can help you prepare for graduation with unique and beneficial experiences

Whatrsquos A BookClubIs a book club a bunch of little old ladies perusing stuffy old tomes or the suburban moms drinking sparkling wine and discussing the latest of the New York Times Bestsellers or is it a group of pretentious know-it-alls spouting off nonsense about Aristotle and Karl Marx Well a book club can be any and all of these but our interpretation is the TRiO Book Club
We are students tutors counselors and directors who exchange our views on the book in question We are learning new ideas reshaping our own and enjoying both a good read and a great conversation as we share interpretations and enjoy each otherrsquos company
