MAGAZINE ANALYSIS’
CLASH MAGAZINE
Clash is a popular music and fashion magazine based in the United Kingdom. Its magazine title is published 12 times a year. It has a circulation of around 40,000.The magazine alternates between modern bands such as Coldplay, The Prodigyand Oasis as well as hip-hop artists like Jay-Z, Kanye West and Beastie Boys, who have all had cover spots in recent issues. It features reviews of music, films and high-street fashion as well as interviews with music stars and sections on new music. The magazine won the Best New Magazine award in 2004 at the PPA Magazine Awards and has won further awards in England and Scotland.
The magazine is very simplistic, there are no kickers, cover line or by line.
OTHERThis is the only piece of text other than the master
head, it reads “HEAVENLY”. This isn’t very descriptive and it doesn’t give you a clear image of what the magazine holds inside. But it does draw
the audience in and make them want to know more because it stands out so much. Because there isnt
much text it is hard to analyse the language and see wether this is a formal or informal magazine. This
text is in clash’s own font which can be found repeatedly through their other issues.
MASTHEADThe title is very bold and it stands out because it is all white and very large, this will draw reader in because it is very obvious. It has been edited
to be behind the models head. A heavy sans-serif font is used for the mast head.
COLOUR SCHEME
The colour scheme for this cover is blue, white and red, which is
very minimalistic keeping in theme with the rest of the
magazine. The blue is in the background of the image and in the model’s eyes. The white is in
the masthead, the word ‘heavenly’, the model’s skin (it is very pale and might have been
edited to be this colour) and her dress. The red is in her hair and her lips. The blue and white are quite peaceful colours and they
might make the audience think of heaven therefore relating to the
theme of that issue.
EYE FLOW
The eye flow is quite natural in this cover. The audience would firstly
notice the masthead, then the models face. The eye flow kind of
misses the word ‘heavenly’ but when the reader looks properly they would
end up noticing it. This might have been done on purpose so when the
audience finds the word they are enticed by it.
COVER IMAGE
The image they have used is of famous singer/songwriter
Florence Welch . It is a portrait mid shot of her face and
shoulders. This photo was most likely shot in a studio as the background is plain and
the model is well lit. The lighting is coming from the top right corner; there is a shadow casted on the left hand side of her face. The model has been
made to look up so it gives the impression she is looking up to
heaven.
ROLLING STONEMAGAZINE
Rolling Stone is a US-based magazine devoted to music, liberal politics, and popular culture that is published every two weeks. Rolling Stone was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner, who is still editor and publisher, and music critic Ralph J. Gleason.The magazine was known for its political coverage beginning in the 1970s, with the enigmatic and controversial gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Rolling Stone magazine changed its format in the 1990s to appeal to younger readers, often focusing on young television or film actors and pop music. This led to criticism that the magazine was emphasizing style over substance. In recent years, the magazine has resumed its traditional mix of content, including in-depth political stories, and has seen its circulation increase.
This magazine cover is very busy there are quite a few kickers and
cover lines.
MASTHEAD
The masthead only uses capital letters at the beginning of each word. The text is very rock looking and is probably the magazines own font. The masthead’s main colour is red but
it has a white outline and a black drop shadow. The masthead has been edited to
be behind the models head.
OTHER
The main cover line uses the colours red and black and is completely in capitals. The
text in red explains who the magazine is about and then
the text in black is what makes the audience want to
read it
COLOUR SCHEME
The colour scheme for this magazine is red, white and black. These colours are all really bold and fit in well with the busy magazine cover. The red in the magazine is found in names or titles like the masthead and ‘THE CLASH’ and ‘JUSTIN BIEBER’. The
black is usually used for the kicker or thing that makes you want to read
that particular article. It can also be found in the model’s black jacket. The
white can be found in the background, the model’s skin and t-shit and the text on top of the black
jacket.
EYE FLOW
The eye flow in this cover is quite natural, because the natural
eye flow starts on the left most of the text has been put on the left so the audience
sees it and then when their eyes move to the
right they catch the bold cover line about Justin Bieber which is
the main article.
COVER IMAGE
This is a portrait mid shot of Justin Bieber a famous singer, he is looking straight ahead to seem as it he it looking into your eyes. This image was shot in a studio,
you can tell because the background is plain white and the model is lit very well. High
key lighting was used in this image and the light was
probably in front of the model and a little to the left, you can tell by the shadow on the right
behind him.
I was mostly inspired by Rolling Stone magazine as I liked the busyness of it and the colour
scheme.
