With the long weekend nowbehind us, and fall just aroundthe corner I thought this CDwould be a great soundtrack forindoor parties, or around thecampfire; “Atlantic Standards”is a collection of Atlantic artistsdoing Celtic songs fit for “rippin’da roof off da place”. When itcomes to kitchenparties in CapeBreton though, there are only 4times a year whenyou should havethem; spring, summer, fall andwinter! Given that, you might askwhat’s the recipe for a greatkitchen party? Good friends, tasty nibbles, lots of‘refreshments’ and great music! The Atlantic Standards CDseries has been offering upgreat music for some time now,and this collection will notdisappoint. The album starts offwith The Rankin’s “ChristyCampbell Medley”, then kicksinto high gear with Great BigSea’s ‘Celtic meets Red Bull’song “Mari-Mac”. I’ve played thisone at dances and the result isalways flying feet on thedancefloor. If that wasn’tenough, “Whole On It” byNew Glasgow’s Fleur Mainvillewas a pleasant surprise, and does indeed raise theroof as well. That romping, stomping party vibe is obviouslythe themen here, with songslike “Colleen” by Rawlins Cross,Shanneyganock’s “Courtin’ In
The Kitchen” and “DonaldMacGill iavry” by TheNavigators-your feet will bebegging for a break! As the CD cover illustrates, thefiddle is an integral part of mostkitchen parties, and it’s wellrepresented here ininstrumental form by numbersfrom Samantha Robichaud,Gill ian Boucher, NatalieMacMaster and ChrissyCrowley. When it’s time for thefiddlers to take a break, a
c a p p e l l anumbers fil l inbeautifully; 2 ofthe best everwritten on theeast coast areincluded here;the BarraM a c N e i l s“ C o a l t o w n
Road” is a personal favouriteof mine. I remember being atan outdoor concert on Pitt Streetin Sydney Mines one eveningand when the Barra’s brokeinto this number it was agoosebump moment, with theold pit site across the road fromthe ballfield. Many people weretouched by that samesentiment.Even across the pond in theU.K. they know Stan Roger’ssignature song “Barrett’sPrivateers” well. The versionhere is performed by The IrishDescendants, and it comespretty darn close to being asgood as Stan’s iconic version,so if you like Stan’s, you’ll likethis version. This CD is greatfor parties, and many a touristwould love this musical tasteof Atlantic Canada.
