  • Throughout the world and throughout history, humanist, atheist, and other nontheist service members have de-fended this country with distinction. Drawing on scientific naturalism and human-based, rational values, we face

the dangers of combat without hope of reward after death.

MAAF provides a unique service in building communi-ty for these heroes. As they move from base to base, from

port to port, and from ship to ship, and out of service — MAAF is there to pro-vide like-minded friends and caregiv-ing. Secular service members need never feel they are alone. We deserve not just tolerance but support and respect from our leaders and squad-mates. Nontheists get this support through MAAF.

Rank structure, combat situations, strict discipline, and concern about career suc-cess make it difficult for service members to advocate for themselves. We provide outreach to chaplains and leaders whose actions promote religion or are disre-spectful to nontheists.

From the Air Force Academy to Kanda-har, Afghanistan, leaders are changing behavior as a result of the intervention of MAAF. We also work closely with allies, connecting members with legal support and advice where necessary.

MAAF encourages active duty personnel to begin an on-post chapter of the MAAF Network. At major installations, ships, and the acade-mies, local organizations are growing around the world. Certified humanist lay leaders work with chaplains to secure resources, advertising, and materials for members. MAAF also part-ners with national and local secular organiza-tions to develop a cohesive nontheist communi-ty. MAAF also maintains an online presence on Facebook, Twitter, Military.com, Atheist Nexus, LinkedIn and elsewhere.

We are not simply an organization of active du-ty service members, we need veterans and civil-ians to help as well. Our members are predomi-nantly young service members who have little financial support for themselves and little abil-ity to advocate for themselves. Active duty members and leaders look to prominent mem-bers of the civilian community and veterans to provide the benefit of their experiences in sup-port of reform in the military.

We need civilians and veterans to support those still on active duty

MAAF educates military leaders about the nontheistic worldview, ensuring MAAF members have the support of their chain of command without fear of dis-crimination for lack of religious belief.

This has come through direct collabora-tion with leaders, including at the US Air Force Academy 2010 Respect Conference:
