Local 506

Brothers and Sisters,

Like most of us in the Unionmovement, I’ve acquired the

motivation and inspiration needed tofight the good fight from a number ofdifferent people. For nearly fivedecades, my thinking and my actionshave been shaped in great measurer byyou - the Members of Local 506.

Through the years, I have beenmentored by leaders such as EnricoMancinelli and now his son, ourInternational Vice President andRegional Manager and my friend,Joseph Mancinelli. I can proudly saythat within my tenure and under Joe’sleadership, LiUNA has never been asunited as it is today!

The display of solidarity is shown in our everyday initiativesbut stood out like never before in 2013, during the “openperiod.” As you are aware, three months prior tothe expiring of a collective agreement,Unions are legally permitted toraid other Unions – this practiceis legal but surely not ethical! In fact, LiUNA Local 506 hasnever initiated a campaign onraiding but we have certainlyfinished some. Withmillions of dollars beingspent and countless manhours, it is fair to say that we have stood our groundand during the “open period”, no one truly gainedmembership, but many Law Firms expanded.

We must now continue to concentrate onorganizing the unorganized and lobby theProvincial Government to reform the legislationon raiding, either by abolishing it or shorteningthe time period in allowing scab Unions whowould rather raid another Union.

During that period, we had held special calledmeetings with our members employed in varioussectors. Once again, our members stood proud andstood behind LiUNA Local 506, but our members alsogave us a message. Although they are proud to belabourers and would never choose another Union, they are equally as proud to be working in thevarious sectors we represent.

As you are aware, LiUNA Local 506 represents a widerange of workers from:

• Building Supplies• Cement Finishers• Cemetery Workers• Concrete Sawing & Drilling

• Demolition• Formworkers• Hospitality• ICI Construction• Industrial Workers• Line Marking• Mason Tenders• Post-Tensioning• Power Sector• Precast• Waste Management• Waterproofers• And so many more

Our members are resilient and versatileand first and foremost, LiUNA membersunder different sectors holding their tradewith great respect.

We heard you and we are reacting! Whilekeeping our initiatives on branding, we have now a mandateto individualize the proud diversities and craftsmanship thatour members work so hard in. You will soon see how our

focused efforts will ban together as we paytribute and promote theindividualization of each sectorour members are employed in.

Brothers and Sisters, this years’negotiations were a hugesuccess!!! Under the strongleadership of Joe Mancinelli,LiUNA International VicePresident and Central &

Eastern Canada Regional Manager, Cosmo Mannella,Business Manager of the Ontario Provincial District

Council and his Assistant Business Manager, PaulHickey, I want to congratulate all for the greataccomplishment. First time ever, we settlednegotiations prior to the expiration of theProvincial ICI Collective Agreement. I am proud to

stand together and build a stronger LiUNA!

As always, Brothers and Sisters, we will continue toimplement changes that will secure an activemembership and improved work environment for youand your families.

Wish you and your loved ones a MerryChristmas and a healthy, happy andprosperous New Year!

In Solidarity,

Carmen PrincipatoBusiness Manager
