Chapter 6: Listening and Note Taking
• When you have no interest in class material, how does it affect you – your behavior, your
grades, your connection to others, your commitment?
I usually won’t pay attention and procrastinate a lot just because the class is not on my
interest. For example if you make me choose between math and science I will most
definitely choose science just because I find that subject very interesting and I know for a
fact that I will pay attention to it 100 percent. Now in the other hand math is my weakness
point and I can’t stand it there for I will most likely not pay attention and procrastinate
when homework is due.
Usually when it comes to math I like having a study group considering that I don’t like the
subject having a study group helps me understand the subject more. Considering that I’m a
very talkative person making friends in a class that I refuse to pay attention to is not hard
at all, I tend to talk a lot and I like making friends. That’s why I don’t have a problem with
connection with others. In addition I love hearing music when I’m doing homework it helps
me concentrate and pay attention to what I’m doing. My commitment after all is to
complete all my curses even if I don’t like the class and I procrastinate I want to make it
and be a good nurse and of curse deliver good healthy babies. Of course all this is going to
take courage and strength for me to make it to the top that’s why I’m willing to give it all
and make it to the top.
Procrastination. I called that the worse disease of all times. I do procrastinate a lot and
especially when I don’t like the subject an or don’t agree with. Like I wrote in my
procrastination paper people have a tendency of leaving things for last minute and I’m one
of those people. I like leaving things for last minute and that’s why I usually make a study
group and tries to take notes during class that why it will help me a lot with my studying
and homework. This definitely hurts my grades and makes them look not as pretty as I
want them to be. Grades are very important to me that am why I always do my best on
test, quizzes, and homework’s. Grades are the points that are going to help me pass my
classes and be the nurse that I have always dreamed about.
My grandfather always told me to give it 100 percent on things even if it meant giving up
dancing and even the beach which is my favorite place to be and if I had the chance to live
there I will take it without thinking about it twice. My education is one of the most important
things in my life right now and in less than 7 years I can see myself working in a hospital
doing what I do best which is taking care of new born babies.
In conclusion this affects you in ways that you probably won’t even realize at first until they
actually start to take a role on you. You are going to have to try even harder just to pretend
that you have any interest at all. This is going to make you feel tired, angry and easily
aggravated.
Next, come up with a positive course of action for Maya that might help her get something out of
her class.
Maya’s problem is that she doesn’t like college at all and she thinks that college is not her thing
for now; there for she is thinking about dropping the classes but her friend Ross is trying to help
her out by doing a study group which I think was a smart decision from her side. Now Maya is
going to be able to exchange notes with Ross and study with her and they are both helping
each other. I think that Maya need it a little push and motivation for her to do things better.
That’s why she wasn’t into it enough to the point that she was just about to just drop college for
good. Motivation is a strong part of education people usually need that motivation from others
that way they won’t feel as lonely and they won’t get frustrated because they will know that they
have somebody there for them that will give them that little push to a better success. She also
needs commitment. She needs to write down the goods and bad about college and from there
she will realize how important it’s to have a degree and be somebody in life. Also responsibility
should be part of her plan too. That way she will be committed to the fact that she needs to do
all it takes to get far in life.
She needs to me determined to improve during the remaining weeks of the course, she also
needs to concentrate on finding a note taking way to will make sense to her, because notes
always help even in the tiniest things. She should make friends in the class, develop a good
relationship with her instructor, or get motivated by the simple fact that passing the course
moves you toward her goal of graduation. She should take what’s valuable away from any
experience.
Searching for meaning in her coursework or her working life can mean more than just fulfillment
for her. The more interested, committed, and fulfilled she is, the more the benefits radiate out
from her and affect others.
