African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) www.amref.org  11 Old Queen Street, London SW1H 9LA. AMREF Is based In Nairobi and has has country offices in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa.  There are field offices in Mozambique and Ethiopia and major programmes in South Sudan, Somalia and Rwanda. Amref’s priority intervention areas are: HIV/AIDS, TB, sexually transmitted diseases, malaria, water and basic sanitation, disaster management and response, family health, clinical outreach services to remote areas, development of health learning materials, training and undertaking of consultancies.

It also sends volunteers to remote Aboriginal settlements throughout Australia. Volunteers have to be Australian, at least 20 and have at least two years previous work expereince. Posts are usually for a minimumof two years and are salaried at a level comprable to local wages to your destination hence food and lodging should be covered.

This organisation was set up by Dr Jack Preger, a British National who has made working In Calcutta his life's work. Nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and podiatrists are required with a minimum of 12 months commitment.

CARE is a very large relief organisation concentrating in Africa, South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. It only takes professionals with extensive experience in the area that are relevant to their current projects. Three years of professional expereince in a developing country and a Masters in public health or diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene are also often required. CARE keep a register of suitable applicants so applying directly is worth while. Adverts for specific projects can be found in the

This Includees, doctors, nurses, physios, OTs , pharmacists and midwives. You must be two years post qualification and contracts are usually for 2 years.

Posts can be from 1 month to 2 years and the amount of assistance is proportional to the length of the contract.
