Language• An important

breakthrough occured In 2008: researchers in Great Britain and the United States created the CymaScope

• It is making "CymaGlyphs," as they have been named: those are reproducible patterns that are expected to form the basis of a lexicon of dolphin language, each pattern representing a dolphin ‘picture word.’

The doctor Lilly made a lot of experiences with dolphins. He made this proposal:

Human baby is: age brain weight imitating sounds 5/6 months 650 gfirst articulate word 9 months 770 gmore complex vocabulary 12/13 months 990 gnaming objects and images 18 months 1030 gcombining words 21 months 1060 gdoing correct sentences 2 years

Finally he says that there is a link betwin the quantity of gray matter and the ability to have a complex and organized language.

Self-awareness• The miror test:• Dolphin is one of the

few animals able to recognise himself in front of a mirror (with american big monkey) !

• The video test :• Ric O’Barry the

trainer of the dolphins in Flipper they were able to reckognise them when he was showing them on tv once a week.

Able to plan his future

• In “Thoses Beautiful Intelligences : Big Monkeys and Dolphins.”, Maddalena Bearzi explained dolphins have complex behaviours. For exemple one of them ; Kelly, was able to make savings and investisments.

• She (it) collected the object the tourists were losing to use them as a bargaining chip one by one to have more food. Then she manage to capture a gull with the fish and she had to eat then get a good reward for that. And finally she learned this to her children.

Culture

• In their natural habitat they can cooperate efficiently to hunt their differents.

• They can even cooperate with humans to drive the school of fish into the fishnet.

• Some use sponges to protect their rostrum while hunting into dangerous places.

Ability to solve complex problems.

• Some scientists were able to learn a new langage based on the symbols to the dolphins.

• We also know dolphins have different « cultures » ; behaviours and knowledges earned by the experience and passed down to their groups or families.

• For exemple a dolphin who learned the trick “to walk on the tail” was released in the nature, then he learned the trick to the individuals of his group.

Individual identity• Individual identity

• Discovered by Randy Wells from the Mote Marine Laboratory, the signature whistle is related to our humans name and first name.

• It has 3 parts: the first half correspond to the name of the mother (“family name”), then one quarter for the group of belonging (“nationality”), and the last quarter is specific of the individual (“first name”).

• This signature whistle can be sent out between 20 and 30 times per second. It informs the other dolphins about his emotional state.

Sense of empathy• There are a lot of stories of

dolphins saving humans. For example those two true stories:

– A dolphin saved a baby from the drowning after a ballad of 30 km in Bangladesh

– A group of 7 dolphin saved 4 swimmers from a white shark in New Zeland by forming a “dolphin wall” during 40 minutes (sharks fear dolphins).
