MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Library is to support the teaching, learning, and research goals of the students, faculty,
staff, and alumnae of the College of Saint Mary. The Library contributes to a culture of academic excellence
and rigorous, values based education by:
• Collaborating with teaching faculty to foster student development of information literacy and
critical thinking skills;
• Developing a balanced collection of print and digital resources that support and enrich the
curriculum;
• Providing timely assistance to members of the CSM community in identifying and obtaining
needed information resources;
• Creating an environment in which study and learning can take place;
• Participating in cooperative arrangements with other libraries to increase access to scholarly
resources;
• Practicing attentive stewardship to ensure that Library resources are used to provide the greatest
benefit to the CSM community.
CONSORTIAL COMMITMENTS
The CSM Library participates in the following organizations:
Nebraska Library Association
Nebraska Library Commission
ICON Library Consortium
Participation in these organizations and consortia allows the Library to acquire electronic resources at
discounted prices, streamline bill payment and other services, and to provide professional development
activities for staff members. Participation also opens up the resources of other Nebraska college libraries to
CSM students and faculty.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
We made significant improvements to the currency and usefulness of the collections this year. Since our
budget situation was a little rosier than in 2013/14, we were able to purchase new books to support the
curriculum and student learning goals, as well as aggressively purge obsolete material.
We eliminated VHS tapes from the children’s and audio-visual collections, replacing them with current
material in DVD or blu-ray formats. Next year we will step up review and replacement of VHS tapes in the
academic video collection.
This year we shifted most of our health sciences journals to online format. The change increased the
amount spent on subscriptions, but the improvement in access will benefit our students. We began to see
some evidence of increased usage in the second half of the academic year, when the new online
subscriptions became available.
Another welcome event was the upgrade of our entire laptop fleet. The new units are lighter and sturdier
than the previous models, and student response has been positive.
5
Reference and instructional activity both increased compared with 2013/14. We continue to work with
faculty to find more opportunities for student instruction, as well find new ways to support online and
distance education students.

Notes
1. Most databases are purchased through the Nebraska Library Commission.
2. The cost reduction between fiscal years 2011/12 and 2012/13 was produced by the cancellation of PsycINFO. Subscription costs for all other databases
continue to rise by 4%-6% annually.
3. Global Issues in Context was purchased through NICLC and included in the annual membership dues. Since NICLC’s dissolution, we buy it directly from
the Nebraska Library Commission.
