LEVENDALE and DISTRICTS NEWS What’s happening in our local areas
Issue 04/ 2015 Week Ending 13/02/2015
This newsletter is set up to keep
Community residents in the loop
about what’s happening in our
local districts. If you have a
notice please let me know so it
can be included in the next issue.
Any item you would like
included in Issue 5/15 needs to
be to me by 27 Feb 2015.
At this stage I can only include
small attachments as I am doing
this from my home computer.
I am hoping to have hard copies
printed off for the notice
boards at Runnymede,
Levendale, Woodsdale and
Oatlands. If there is anyone
who would print one off and
display it elsewhere it would be
much appreciated.
I am happy to include items for
sale or wanted. Employment op-
portunities and anything that you
wish to let the local community
be aware of.

A bit of History behind the Back to Woodsdale Picnic & Fair Day.
The Back to Woodsdale Picnic & Fair day is our local Museums way to revive a little bit of the “old days.” Since the successful restoration of the Woodsdale State School (which closed in 1965) in 2009 as a local museum the members have tried to abide by their motto of “Keeping Communities
together and Keeping History Alive”.
Woodsdale Sports Carnival began in the 1940’s and continued to the 1950’s. It was held on the long weekend of March at the old sports ground on Cyril Palmer’s property near the corner of Buckland & Woodsdale rd’s. He had a paddock which was used by the Woodsdale community to play cricket and football. In the 1940’s A Sports Committee was formed and the Woodsdale Sports Day became an annual event. The sports day was discontinued in the late fifties which was a pity as the day was a popular event for some 16 years. It started as a family picnic type event and grew into a major chop-ping carnival which unfortunately became too expensive to run. Henry Gordon Crawford of Leven-dale, who was a noted sportsman and wood chopper of the area was later a handicapper for most of the events.
The Main attraction in the 1950’s was Wood chopping (which unfortunately we are unable to do these days) such as the one held on Saturday, 5th March 1955 a flyer for which is in the Museum’s ar-
chives and advertised the following:
Open Handicap Chop – 1 foot Underhand - with £50 and Trophy
First prize £40; second prize £7; third prize £3.
Fees for competing – nomination 10/-; acceptance £1/10/-
Open Handicap Chop – 10 inch Standing Log with £40 and Trophy
First prize £33; second prize £5; third prize £2.
Fees for competing – nomination 10/-; acceptance £1
Local Novice Chop – 9 inch Underhand. For axemen who have never won a chop
First prize £7; second prize £2; third prize £1.
Fees for competing – nomination 5/-; acceptance 5/-
Novelty Events Held were :
For the Ladies – Nail driving also stepping the Chain
(stepping the chain we have revived this year for all comers)
For the Men – Bowling at wicket and Kicking Football
All competitors competed at their own risk in those days.
Some of the Woodchoppers who attended these games over the 16 years were names such as YOUDS, DEVINE, HALL and others Local Choppers were CRAWFORD, PALMER, DARE, SCOTT, DUGGAN & FOSTER (World Cham-pion David Foster’s ancestors). Local ladies provided a sit down lunch – water was all heated in a copper over an open fire
(no electricity then) The day was finished off with a GRAND BALL at night, admission 3/-. The Orchestra provided by Sainsbury’s Orchestra from Hobart. A Homemade supper was served, again provided by the local ladies.
