Understanding Pathways
You may wish to pre-teach these words before the lesson or refer to them during the lesson. The
checklist is not exhaustive and a list displaying these words and their meanings should be available to all
students during the lesson.

By the end of Year 10, students face a myriad of choices regarding future education and training. This lesson aims to explore the VE&T training options associated with Apprenticeships and Traineeships. While still at school students need to spend sometime investigating their options before making a decision about a preferred Pathway.

Classroom activities
Apprenticeships - offer a job pathway that combines training for a nationally recognised qualification with employment. This job pathway can begin at school with School Based Apprenticeships (SBAs) Apprenticeships are available to people over 15 years of age and can even be used by employers to increase the skills of existing employees. Apprenticeships are available in every major Australian industry
Traineeship - normally last one to two years and are most often specific to non-trade areas such as hospitality, retail, information technology and business administration. A traineeship position may be full-time or part-time, with the training conducted by an approved TAFE or private training provider either on or off the job, or a combination of both methods. On successful completion of a traineeship, the trainee earns a nationally recognised qualification
Australian Apprenticeships - the general term covering both Apprenticeships and Traineeships
School Based Apprenticeship (SBA) – an apprenticeship qualification undertaken by a student while still at school
VE&T in Schools – Vocational Education and Training certificates offered as part of a VCE or VCAL program. VE&T allows students to combine a vocational certificate while completing either VCE or VCAL

CONCEPT QUESTIONS 10 MINUTES
Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) – hands-on option for students in Years 11 and 12. VCAL is a recognised senior qualification leading to employment, further training at TAFE or Apprenticeships
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) - senior school certificate offering pathways to university, TAFE, further study or employment. VCE can provide an ENTER score for selection to higher education courses Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) - ranking system used to determine a candidate’s suitability for mainly higher education courses

• What pathways are available at my school?
• How do l trial a career?
Ask students to define the term ‘Pathway’. List their responses for this term.
Develop a list of Pathways that students would like to explore further, include Apprenticeships and Traineeships as the key focus of this list.Develop a list of suitable resources that will help them in finding the selected information.

This activity aims to allow students to work in teams, pairs or groups. Students elect to locate one site and try to complete the answers to all the concept questions in the allocated timeframe
Note: Students may need to visit more than one site to complete all questions.Allow time for debriefing of findings:

Students are to select up to three occupations that have a TAFE Pathway and prepare a study and training plan for these occupations
They should include:
1. School subjects at Years 10, 11 and 12
2. TAFE courses and locations
3. Occupational Profile – outlining the type of person that would be best suited to the selected occupation
4. Industry Profile – outlining the type of work that is undertaken in that industry and the job prospects for the future
Students will need access to the Internet for this lesson
