Law in the UK
Why study law in the UK?
The UK has long held a significant political role in world affairs, with English remaining one of the principle global languages of communication, and the main language for international law. A law degree from a UK university means that you will be expertly prepared to communicate, negotiate and transact with partners and clients all over the world.
A system that is centuries-oldThe UK’s common law system dates back more than eight centuries, and forms the basis for legal systems in many English-speaking countries around the world.
A global reachEnglish commercial law is also often the governing law in international contracts. Four of the world’s ten largest law firms are headquartered in the UK, and hundreds of international firms have offices here.
An expert educationLaw degrees tend to be highly vocational and cover all aspects of the law which are required to prepare you for a legal career. The 2014 QS World University Rankings for law as a subject area ranked three UK universities in the top 10 — University of Oxford and University of Cambridge came 2nd and 3rd respectively, and LSE was ranked 7th.

Careers in law
Graduates of UK law degrees have a range of employment options available to them. Many graduates pursue a career as a solicitor or barrister, and a UK degree in law is recognised by the Bar in many countries around the world. A law degree is also a highly respected qualification among employers with many transferable skills that can be applied in other industries.
International students who complete law degrees in the UK might be especially interested in pursuing a career in international law, where they might work on human rights cases, and advise NGOs or government departments. There are also opportunities within large law firms which deal with international legal cases.

Law in LondonLondon is home to some of the UK’s most renowned universities, many of which offer law degrees. It is also the headquarters of some of the most respected law firms in the world. Studying law in London will enable you to visit a variety of law firms and law courts, including the historic Old Bailey, which has hosted some of Britain’s most high profile criminal trials.
“ Students in London are close to everything happening, from political issues, big debates in the House of Commons to the culture and festivals. We did the tour in the Houses of Parliament a while before the general election and it was fascinating being there in the seat of British government. This trip was very useful for us who do government and law as a subject; we were in the heart of British politics, where the law and the most important decisions are made and where the prime ministers and the Queen sit. ”
Enedia Marra from Albania, now studying Law at the University of Reading
