The National Institute on Aging’s (NIA’s) Progress Report on Alz-heimer’s Disease, 2000, an informative publication to use as back-ground for reporting on Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), is free to everyone.This report is the latest in an annual series highlighting the mostup-to-date findings in the study of AD and memory.

Progress Report on Alzheimer’s Disease, 2000, covers a variety oftopics important in AD research. It presents important scientific ad-vances and information about four pieces of the puzzle that are fallinginto place: the main characteristics of AD, its causes; how to diagnoseAD, and how to treat it. The report offers a brief outlook on future ADresearch and lists more than 100 references.

DONATED SUPPLIES–WITH A DIFFERENCE

For most nonprofit organizations, donated supplies are a “take it orleave it” situation. However, one not-for-profit program is different inthat it not only lets nonprofit directors choose which items they need,but also the quantities as well. Members select what they need from250-page catalogs issued every ten weeks. Each catalog contains suchitems as office supplies, toys, arts and crafts, janitorial products, cloth-ing, personal care products, small gift items, tools and hardware, and

holiday party goods. Recipient groups pay dues ranging from $475 to$575, plus shipping and handling, but the merchandise itself is free. Ac-cording to the program coordinator, participants receive an average of$2,500 worth of new supplies per catalog.
