Large Lecture Science Courses - Problem Sets
User: Prof. Sullivan
• Prof. Sullivan has been teaching biology for 10 years. This quarter, she is teaching a second-year biology course, Bio 105. Bio 105 is a large lecture course with 250 students. Prof. Sullivan has 3 teaching assistants.
Teacher Usage Scenario:
• Having finished the first 2 weeks of lectures, Prof. Sullivan wants to test her students’ grasp of lecture materials by having them complete their first problem set.
• She logs into her Bio 105 course web site.
• In the Admin Assignment view, she selects the problem set template from the drop-down menu and then clicks the Create New Assignment link.
• In the Assessment Editor view, she is presented with a problem set template. This template was previously created in the template editor by one of her teaching assistants.

Teacher Usage Scenario (continued):
• For problem set #1, Prof. Sullivan wants to have a combination of multiple choice, multiple choice with rationale, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, matching questions. From the question pool, she has an option to download and use questions from the publisher’s web site, reuse questions from previous courses, and/or create her own questions and add to the pool.
• She wants to release the problem set at noon on Wed., 4/16/03, and set the due date on Sat., 4/19/03, 8:00 p.m.
• She likes the convenience of the problem set template which has the following pre-selected features:- ability to draw questions from question pool - assignment with no multiple parts- students have unlimited # of attempts until due date- questions can be answered in non-sequential order - release solution on specified date- available to registered students only- instructor can opt to get auto email notification when problem sets are submitted- student gets auto email notification when problem set is available

Large Lecture Science Courses - Problem Sets
On the due date, Prof. Sullivan and her 3 teaching assistants receive an auto email reminder that problem sets have been submitted (it would be nice if the auto email notification could provide a link to direct the instructor/TA’s back to the admin view of the problem set where they can easily email those students who failed to submit their problem sets on time).
The teaching assistants grade the submitted problem sets and contact those students who missed the deadline.
Prof. Sullivan and her teaching assistants have the option to extend the deadline/due date for individual students.

3 days after submitting her problem set, Keli gets an auto email from her T.A. that her score and feedback are posted online.
