Gate Entry Pass System Now Available
Dash tag procedures are coming in June! Cost effective printing for the tags has been located and the tags are now available. All residents and visitors should either have a window tag or a dash tag.
As a reminder, the hang/dashboard tags were developed primarily to identify visitors. There are 4 categories of tags each with a unique color and a defined expiration date:
• Resident tags - These are only for persons who do not want a sticker.
• Frequent Visitor tags - These tags are designed for routine visitors such as cleaning and yard personnel or close relatives of residents. These tags will only be issued upon the request of a resident. Please see the application in this newsletter to request frequent visitor tags.
• Construction contractor tags - These are issued solely to a contractor associated with the clubhouse rebuild or a contractor hired by a resident for a multi-week construction project. A construction tag will have a visible expiration date allowing for a reasonable time for completion of the project.
• Day Visitor tag - These tags will be for day visitors only with the date clearly displayed on the tag.

Tennis NewsIn the May issue of the LOE Newsletter, an advertisement for a
tennis camp was included. All tennis camps are strictly forbidden by the community rules developed in conjunction with the Tennis Committee in August of 2012. These rules were developed after numerous complaints about the availability of courts and non-LOE resident use. The tennis coach involved has been notified that the camp is not permitted and also that the 3rd tennis court should always be kept open for residents wishing to play, not for personal or group lessons. Any tennis coach who willfully violates community rules is subject to losing the right to offer services in the community. For your information below are the tennis rules for our community. Your cooperation with all tennis rules is sincerely appreciated.
LOE Tennis Court Reservation and Courtesy Rules(Effective August 1, 2012)
1. Courts are for the use of LOE residents and their guests only. Non-residents may play, only if playing with an LOE resident. One resident may have 3 playing guests, maximum.
2. Reservations may be made for, and play limited to, 2 hours max. per group. Reservation is forfeited if party does not show up within 10 minutes of the reserved court time.
3. Reservations should be made using the legible last name of one LOE resident playing (and coach’s name, if booking a lesson). New court reservation sheets will be posted every Monday morning by the Tennis Committee.
4. Reservations will continue to be on a first come, first served, basis. However, residents with long-standing, regular lessons or residents who want to play in a regular, weekly time slot can request recurring court time, which may be granted at the discretion of the Tennis Committee (resident should send a note to [email protected] no later than Sunday).
5. A resident may book a private lesson for one court with a coach and up to 3 invited guests. All coaches must register with and provide their contact details to the Tennis Committee.
6. Lessons may not be conducted on all three courts at the same time. At least one end court (Court 1 or 3) must be left open for resident walk-ons or for residents who reserve a court for non-lesson play.
7. No open enrollment clinics or camps may be advertised or conducted at LOE, but group lessons may be conducted. A group lesson is defined as having a maximum of 6 students, and consisting of LOE residents ONLY. If at the time of the group lesson, no other courts are reserved or in use, the group may play on a second, adjacent court. As above, an end court must be left open for non-lesson resident play for the duration of all lessons.
8. Leagues must contact and register with the Tennis Committee before reserving courts for seasonal play.
9. Please play on the court you have reserved. If you are playing and another party with reserved court time is waiting to come on, be courteous, finish your point, and graciously vacate the court.

SWANS IN LOEThe swans were unusually active this spring, with four nests and
a total of 21 laid eggs. Unfortunately we have only 3 cygnets to show for all this effort including almost 40 days of swans sitting on the nests. There are many reasons for the loss of so many potential baby swans. Some of the reasons include two adult swans killed by predators (probably coyotes), raccoons stealing eggs despite repellants, cool weather and heavy rain. The 3 baby swans are located in Pelican Pointe.
As you probably noticed there were a number of warning signs posted during the nesting season. This is because the male swans can become very aggressive during mating and nesting season. The signs were designed to prevent injury to humans or swans. Unfortunately several residents ignored the signs and approached the wildlife. Two male swans were removed in early May because of their protective nature and are now for sale to another community. In order to avoid these issues in the future, the Board and the Wildlife Committee have agreed to keep only younger swans and non-aggressive female swans. Any aggressive males as well as pairs of adult swans that reach breeding age will be sold before nesting season begins. This will eliminate the need for warning signs in the future.
The wildlife is a beautiful part of our community. The Board wishes to thank the Wildlife Committee for their tireless efforts.

Clubhouse UpdateThe design team continues to work diligently toward a final
design. Bids for construction are scheduled to be distributed before Memorial Day. Bids are anticipated to be returned by mid-June. Unfortunately, the insurance settlement is still not finalized from Hanover. Because of this uncertainty, several contingency plans within the desired design package have been developed. Actual construction is currently planned to begin after school starts this fall. A town hall to discuss costs and more detailed schedules will be held once all cost information is known.

Lakes on EldridgeAdoptable Dog of the Month
MarleyHave you thought about a new best friend for your family? If so,
please consider Marley, a one year old Pointer mix (maybe with a smidgen of Dalmation and maybe something else too). Marley was picked up as a stray by the City of Houston Animal Control (BARC) and was rescued just a few minutes before he was to be put down because his short hold time was up.
Many volunteers work tirelessly to get dogs out of BARC and Marley was one of the lucky ones. Rescue dogs have had the misfortune of being lost or abandoned by their owers but still make wonderful companions. No-kill shelters are not prevalent in Texas and the euthanasia rate at pounds is very high.
Marley weighs about 42 lbs., is up-to-date on all shots, neutered, heartworm negative and microchipped. He is crate trained, housebroken and also had over a month's professional training and knows basic commands. Our boy has a very sweet and loving disposition and gets along with dogs, cats and children. He is energetic, loves to run and would be a great companion for an active family with a secure fenced backyard and children over 7. Marley's favorite time is laying next to his person and getting tummy rubs.
If you would like to meet Marley in person, please contact Nahid Haize at 832-723-8157, e-mail: [email protected] or Cindi Hohle at [email protected]. He can also be visited at Ace Hardware at 14455 Memorial Dr between Dairy Ashford and Kirkwood. If you can not adopt Marley at this time, please also consider being a part-time foster at night, which can also be very rewarding.
Meanwhile, please be certain pets you already have are wearing I.D. tags even if they are microchipped, with your phone number. We've spent countless hours returning lost LOE dogs who get out during the evening or on weekends and when found there is no place to keep them until owner is located. Any turned into Animal Control (Harris County or BARC) usually have only a short 72 hrs. to be claimed. Our streets are especially not safe for lose dogs at night when drivers may have trouble seeing them.

While there are several factors that can cause anxiety in older adults, it can be difficult to identify because they express anxiety in unique ways, according to an expert at Baylor College of Medicine.
According to Dr. Melinda Stanley, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at BCM, common types of anxiety disorders in adults include:
Older adults express anxiety in different ways
-Generalized anxiety-Specific fears and phobias-Social phobias-Post-traumatic stress disorder
Anxiety symptoms that older adults and their family members should watch for include:
-Shortness of breath -Increased heart rate -Dizziness -Difficulty sleeping-Muscle aches and pains
Anxiety is not a normal part of aging and can be treated. The first important step is to have a physical exam.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a treatment option that teaches learning skills to manage anxiety. Skills that can help reduce anxiety include relaxation, changing thoughts, facing fears, learning how to solve problems and learning behaviors to improve sleep.

Allergy prevention, management tips
It is important for parents to remember the basics about prevention and management of allergies, said a pediatrician from Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Armando Correa, an assistant professor of pediatrics at BCM and a pediatrician at Texas Children¹s Hospital, offered the following tips:
-Seek immediate medical attention for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, tongue or other extremities.
-Consider short-term medication for symptoms such a runny nose, itchy eyes or sneezing.
-If symptoms persist, contact your pediatrician. -For children under the age of 2 experiencing allergies, always
seek medical attention. -Help manage environmental allergies by avoiding places that have
just been cleaned or places where pets frequent.
Correa also offered tips on food allergies:
-If your child has multiple or severe allergies, they should always carry an injectable medication.
-Always read the food labels and be aware of where foods are manufactured.
-Consider allergy testing for children with severe or multiple allergies.
Always consult a pediatrician on questions related to allergy prevention and management.
