AHAPPYwhale, freed fromentanglement, is oneof thisweek’s success stories of the South African Whale Dis-entanglement Network (SAWDN).
Craig Lambinon, spokesperson, said SAWDN was de-ployedonMondayat 14:12 to respond toanareaapproxi-mately 18 nautical miles off-shore from St Francis Bay.This was after reports were received of a 10 meter longjuvenileHumpbackwhale, entangled inropeandbuoys.
The NSRI St Francis Bay sea rescue craft, Spirit ofSt Francis II, responded carrying volunteer membersof SAWDN.
“On arrival the whale was found to be entangled inthree loops of rope around its caudal peduncle (the nar-row part) at the tail and held buoyant by a flotationbuoy, while appearing to be anchored to traps at the endof the line on the ocean floor.
“One cut, using the specialised whale disentangle-
ment equipment through two of the ropes, immediatelyset the whale free of all of the rope and the whale swamoff appearing to be healthy and diving confidently. Weare confident that this operation has been successfuland that the whale would survive,” said Lambinon.
Telkom Maritime Radio Services assisted with radiocommunications. The operation was completed by18:00.
The South African Whale Disentanglement Networkis a volunteer network founded in 2006. It is made upof volunteers from the department of environmental af-fairs for oceans and coasts, the NSRI, the Dolphin Ac-tion and Protection Group, SA National Parks, the SAPolice Services, Telkom Maritime Radio Services, re-search organisations, the Natal Sharks Board, TableMountain National Parks, West Coast Wildlife rescueandahostofvariousmarineandenvironmentalgroups.

BLINDNESSmay include completeor partial vision loss that one can’tcorrect with glasses or contactlenses.
Many health conditions couldlead to blindness. Fortunately, witha few precautions, one could mini-mize the risk of developing visionproblemsandpossibly, evenpreventblindness.
According to the ehow medicalwebsite, these are the six ways toprevent blindness.
1. Keep healthy blood sugar levels.Ifnotkeptunder control, highsugarlevels could lead to damage of theretina, which is the layerresponsiblefor capturing images and sendingthem to the brain, located on theback of the eye. Themore sugar lev-els stay above the safe range, themore risk of developing blindness.
2. Check your blood pressure reg-ularly, as it could causebloodvesselsin the eye to burst and lead to visionimpairment. Adopt healthy lifestyle
habits, like healthy eating regularexercise and stress management re-gimes to keep blood pressure undercontrol.
3. Have regular eye exams tocheck for glaucoma. Glaucoma in-creases pressure inside the eye andcould result in a damaged retina.
4. Protect your eyes from ionizingand UV radiation to prevent cata-racts,which cloud the eye’s lens. Thelens allows the eye to focus light onthe retina.
5. Take bilberry supplements. Bil-berry is an antioxidant, whichccould remove toxins from the reti-na and increase circulation to theeye area.
6. Consume a diet rich in antioxi-dants. This includes broccoli, cauli-flower, bell peppers and carrots.Antioxidants are responsible for re-moving free radicals, molecular frag-mentsthattriggerchemicaldegrada-tion in the body, including the eyes.Read more: http://www.ehow.com/how_4469274_prevent-blindness.html

PEOPLE who lost their homes in the recentfire in Tokyo Sexwale, helped to clean up theAstonBayneighbourhood as part of Interna-tional Clean-up Day on 20 September.
The neighbourhood watch lead the clean-up operation.Joan Marais of Aston Bay requested peo-
ple who put out plastic and bottles for recy-cling, to put these items in a separate bag, preferably transparent.“This would stop people from opening
bags, resulting in refuse being blown allover by the wind. When you see peoplescratching in bags, talk to them and tellthem thatwe, as the residents of AstonBay,are tired of them creating such a mess inour town.“If onlyMrsMadat from themunicipality
will come onboard and cleanup the councilplots, thewhole placewill look somuch bet-ter. As for those people who dump grass cut-tings on municipal land, shame on you.”She said if everyone did their part, the
town would look even better, thanks to theactions of the Dorp van Drome project.Marais urged people to join the neigh-
bourhood watch and to do one patrol permonth.“If any of you are still not feeling guilty
about the fact that you sleep peacefully everynight it’s about time. Is it really so much toask?”

PAGING through old copies of the Kouga Ex-press one can see just how much has changedin the 10 years the newspaper has been a regu-lar arrival in people’s post boxes on a Thurs-day.
On looking at the content of the newspaperthrough the years, it is clear however, thatKougaExpressmight have had a few nips andtucks, sometimes major surgery, to staywith the times, but at its core it remainedtrue to its roots in giving the local communi-ty a platform for their news and being avoice for ordinary people who do extraordi-nary things.
Over the years the Kouga Express hasgrown to become the Kouga and Koukamma’strusted source for news and information, aswell as serving as a catalyst for businessgrowth through advertising.
For the past ten years, the newspaper al-ways has been anchored by accurate and fairreporting, strong storytelling and good pho-
tography and supported by loyal advertiserswho make the free paper possible. The mix ofhard news and human interest features, aswell as events listings, arts and entertainmentstories and sport reports, have made the Kou-ga Express an irresistible read for locals andvisitors.
As the current editor of the Kouga Express,I get immense satisfaction when I walk intoa coffee shop or business on a Thursday andsee people poring over the pages of the pa-per, discussing the latest stories or talkingabout a front page storyorphotograph.Thatlevel of interest in local news is what makeswhat we do day in and day out so rewarding.
My highlights are many, but those thatstand out still are the many times that I realisethrough my work that there are good peoplein this world and the community we live in:good people who truly give without wantingto receive in return or make the headlines.
Despite the (too) many stories of crimeand corruption making the headlines inmost of the news media, it is good to knowthat there are still good people in thisworld who believe that no matter how
small, they canmake a differencein this world -people who givehope to the hopelessand help to thehelpless.
While people stillwant to read aboutthese people, therewill always be aKouga Express inour postboxes on aThursday.

THE idea of a community newspaper for the Kouga areawas first bounced around, probably toward the end of2002.
Media24 as a group in theEasternCapehad a solid plat-form of community weekly papers like the UD News, inthose days taken care of by the never forgotten (late)Brian Halgreen and the PE Express who was edited byCoetzee Gouws. Both titles had a loyal following and ad-vertisers were extremely happy withthe results they were achieving withcampaigns in these publications. Theywere essentially the voice of the com-munity and closely connected to themarkets that they served, readers andadvertisers alike.I recall, it had first taken a great deal
of concept selling and immense con-vincing of our boss from Cape TownAbraham van Zyl (with amazing sup-port) of our direct chief-in-chargeDr Jo-hannBotha and colleaguesAndréOlivi-er and Gerjo Hoffmann to get “head of-fice” to allow us to increase the printorder of the PE Express from 76 500 to90 000… so much so that I had to securethe advertising revenues to cover costsfor the 12 months ahead. This ended upbeing a wonderful success story whichto this dayhas positioned thePEExpressas market leader….But then came the double whammy…I had to convince everybody that starting a new publi-
cation in unchartered waters for Jeffreys Bay and thesurrounding areas would be a good idea. At the timethere was a well-established local sold weekly publica-tion and it would take a huge effort to break into themar-ket, not to mention costs and commitment.
Cutting to the chase, we eventually got the green lightfor the project aftermonths of budgeting, forecasting andspeculating. The decision was made that if we wanteda “local” feel to the newspaper then we had to try andfind locals to run it and take care of the new kid on theblock. I recall at the time, that the community welcomedthe publication with open arms, as we focused greatlyon the schools, municipal issues, what’s up diaries andthe likes.
The greatest memory I have of howwe entrenched ourselves in the area isof the editor Hannelie calling me fromtime to time and talking about oom dieand tannie daai and the stories thatthey were bringing to the table. I knewthen that we had created a voice anda platform for the community thatwould be embraced.Advertisers on the other hand, were
sceptical at first, not realising at thetime that if Media 24 makes a commit-ment, it is with the long term goals inmind. It took a great deal of hard workand knocking on doors week afterweek to get the support we required toget the paper to pay for itself.Fortunately, after months of count-
ing each and every booked centimetreof advertising space,we turned the cor-ner and the paper established itself as
a keeper in the area.To this day, I have the fondest memories of the long
hours and scratching of heads … but I am extremelyproud to have been a part of the birth and nurturing ofa great product.Congratulations on your 10th birthday, may you con-
tinue to be the pillar in the community that you havepositioned yourself as, for many years to come.

in hul beroep gekwalifiseerd en by Psira geregi-streer.”Volgens wetgewing (Private Security Industry Regu-
.24/7 Slotmakerdienste
.Nommerplate
.Trofees
.Batterye (insluitende horlosies)
.Slotte
.Laser gravering (hout en glas)
.Persoonlike hout-snywerk (knipselwerken versiering).Rubber stempels.Perspex bewoording.21-verjaardag sleutels.Naamplaatjies.“Dog tags”
Vir meer inligting, skakel L&A Number-

THEKouga Council andmunicipal staff wishto congratulate the Kouga Express on its 10thbirthday.
The community media industry has grownin strength since the birth of our country’s de-mocracy 20 years ago.
The local media landscape is evidence ofthis, with a plethora of community newspa-pers, electronic publications and a communi-ty radio station having taken root in our soil
since 1994.As local government, we rejoice in the
growing strength of our community mediaand acknowledge the critical role publica-tions such as the Kouga Express play in mak-ing information accessible to communitiesfrom all walks of life.
Ten years is a milestone birthday for anybusiness. TheKouga Expresswould not havereached this milestone if you weren’t add-ing value to the lives of the people of Kouga
region. As your paper prepares for the next ten
years, our wish for you is that the Kouga Ex-press will grow from strength to strength.
May your newspaper always give a voice tothose who need to be heard.
May it be a portal through which we get toknow, understand and care about one ano-ther, regardless of race, class, gender orcreed.
May it be a platformwhere, together, we ce-
lebrate our successes, mourn our losses andlearn from our mistakes.
May it be a tool for the dissemination of in-formation that has the power to change livesand uplift communities.
May it be an arena for constructive debateand a guide dog that warns us when we arein danger of straying from the path set by ournation’s founding fathers.Kouga Express, we salute you and wish you
only the best in the years to come.

Elke liewe storie wat ek as joernalis vertel
het, het tot my menswees bygedra.Ek het dit geniet om ’n stem te gee aan die
wat nie een het nie en te sien hoe ’n mens
’nverskil kanmaak.

THE relationship between the South AfricanNational Blood Service and the Kouga Ex-press can almost be summed up in one word:LIFE.
Just as breathing is essential to every hu-man living being, having this close relation-shipwith theKougaExpressmeans theworldto SANBS and all the patients we serve.
Especially in the Eastern Cape, we are theenvy of all other areas (SANBS operates na-tionally) as no one can rival the commitmentand dedication we enjoy from this publica-tion. Whether it is a nice, feel-good story oran urgent appeal for blood during a bloodshortage, we can always count on the KougaExpress to feature us somewhere, even list-ing our regular blood drives to help keep peo-ple informed.
We do understand this is not always possi-ble to publish everything we send, but pridefills us when we do spot that familiar photo-graph or heading, as we know the readers weare reaching are our potential and current
blood donors. So from the PE Branch of the SANBS,
here’s wishing the Kouga Express a happy10th birthday, and to the next 10 years ofwalking this path, togetherwe canmake a dif-ference and continue to save lives every day.

stop-diens in finansiële beplanning.

TEN years ago Media24 took thechance to launch a local print medi-um in the Kouga area.
This wonder child is no other thanKouga Express.
Distributing 20 000 copies free eve-ry week to households, Kouga Ex-press definitely holds strong withinits communities.
Delivering high quality hyper localcontent, and a reliable and effectiveadvertising medium, the publicationis currently the most profitable with-in OP Koerante.
Celebrating 10 successful years isdue only to the dedication and com-mitment of the Kouga Express team.
So, well done Monique Basson, Es-toretha Strydom and team for 10years and a whole lot more to come.

THE past decade has brought a lot of changeto the Kouga – both good and bad.
Wehave seenhowJeffreysBayhas becomethe financial capital of the Kouga, with thebuilding of the Fountains Mall and thegrowth of the tourism industry.
Gone are the dayswhen therewere definedtourism periods, like Christmas and Easterholidays.
There are tourists all year round nowa-days andone just has to take a drive intoPep-per Street at Supertubes, to see how all thehouses there have been converted into ac-commodation establishments to cater for thedemand from foreign as well as local visi-tors.
While Humansdorp has suffered with theeconomic shift to Jeffreys Bay, there areplans in the pipeline for property develop-ments that will have a positive impact for theresidents of Kouga’s biggest inland town.
St Francis Bay is still a firm favourite forSouth African holidaymakers and eventhough there has been a lot of growth in andaround the canals, St Francis has still main-tained its small village vibe and appeal.
The farming industry is very resiliant inthe Gamtoos and together with tourism stillforms the economic backbone of the Kouga.
There have been negatives as well over thepast ten years, and none more apparent thanthe declining infrastructure in the Kouga.
Sewage spills have become more regularand burst water pipes are the norm in somesuburbs.
The potholes in our roads are getting big-ger and bigger and even entire bridges havebeen washed away – such as the Sand RiverBridge that connects St Francis Bay to theoutside world.
Kouga has been unable toavoid the decline in basic ser-vice delivery that has affectedmuch of the Eastern Cape andnot a single RDP house haseven been built in the past 10years.
However, the propertymarket has weathered thestorm and places like theLinks in St Francis Bay andMarina Martinique in JBayare sought after by investorsas well as locals wanting tolive a great lifestyle.
Yet, it is the growth in thetourism industry over thepast decade that has had amajor impact on the Kouga.
“Tourism is the key forsustainable economic growth
for Jeffreys Bay and the Kouga,” says DAcouncillor Brenton Williams.
“Bringing more tourists to town willcreate more jobs and more opportunitiesfor local business and that is what wemust ensure happens over the next tenyears as well.”
We have a natural asset in Supertubes, which is one of the finest waves in the worldand surfers have been travelling to JBaysince the 1960’s to surf our waves.”
Capitalising on this natural asset has seenthe launch of the JBay Winterfest - whichbrings in tens of thousands of people to town,as well as ensuring worldwide media expo-sure for Jeffreys Bay.
Beingon thedoorstepof theBaviaanskloof,a world heritage site is also starting to paydividends from a tourism perspective.
The annual Trans Baviaans MountainBike Race, which begins in Willowmore andends 230 km later in Jeffreys Bay, bringsthousands of people into town as well.
What will the next ten years hold for theKouga?
The construction ofwind farmswill ensurejob creation in the short term, while localswaitwith bated breath to see if the controver-sial Thyspunt Nuclear Power Station will begiven the green light.
Should Thyspunt go ahead, it can be takenas a given that a R 200 billion developmenthas the potential to change theKouga forever– both positively and negatively.
One thing is for sure, however. In 10 years’time, the waves will still be breaking on ourgolden beaches, the shells will still be wash-ing up upon our shores and we will still becelebrating the arrival of the whales and dol-phins in our Bay!
Kouga: Lots of changeover past decade
Kouga has been unable toavoid the decline in basic ser-vice delivery that has affectedmuch of the Eastern Cape andnot a single RDP house haseven been built in the past 10
phins in our Bay!
DA councillor Brenton Williams
AS jy hoor ’n makelaar wil jou kom sien, watgaan deur jou gedagtes?
“Wat wil hierdie polissmous nou aan myverkoop?” “Makelaars is almal skelms!”

DAAR is letterlik duisende makelaars vir ko-rttermynversekering in Suid-Afrika.
’nGoeie makelaar bly deurentyd in verbindingmet sy kliënte..Is jou makelaar tegnologies gevorder?
