ABOUT KILIMANJARO
At 5895m Kilimanjaro is the ldquoWorldrsquos Highest
Free Standing Mountainrdquo Considered to be
the easiest of the ldquo7 Summitsrdquo Kilimanjaro
should not be underestimated and no matter
what your fitness level this trek will challenge
and inspire you The great news is that it is
achievable and most people who take the
time to train and acclimatise will reach the
summit
Having won ldquoAfricarsquos Leading Tourist Attractionrdquo
for the past 3 consecutive years Kilimanjaro
is high on many peoplersquos bucket lists and is
particularly busy between July and September
There are many different routes on Kilimanjaro
but we recommend and use the Machame
or Lemosho routes because of their superior
acclimatisation
Acclimatisation on Kilimanjaro is critical Every
year thousands of trekkers are evacuated
to hospital because they do not acclimatise
properly This is why all of AOLrsquos itineraries
include 7 - 8 day treks and we put a huge
emphasis on safety and going slow We have
a proven safety and summit rate and in the
past 3 years we have successfully taken
100 of our trekkers to Uhuru Point
Kilimanjaro is a fascinating mountain with 5
different ecosystems ranging from rainforest
to arctic glaciers The first recorded ascent
was in 1889 and the summit Uhuru Peak
means ldquofreedomrdquo in Swahili

Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation 1800m to 3000m
Distance 11 km
Hiking Time 5 - 7 hours
Habitat Rain forest
The drive from Moshi to Machame Gate takes
about 90 minutes The journey passes through
the village of Machame which is located on the
lower slopes of the mountain After registering
at the gate we walk through the rain forest
on a winding trail up a ridge This trail can be
muddy and slippery and it frequently rains on
this day It is recommended that you bring or
hire good wet weather gear
Day 5 - Kilimanjaro Day 2
- Machame Camp to Shira Camp
- Elevation 3000m to 3800m
- Distance 5 km
- Hiking Time 4 - 6 hours
- Habitat Heather amp Moorland
After breakfast we leave the rain forest and
continue our ascent along a steep and rocky
ridge The climb is more challenging than day
1 and the majority of the morning will be spent
walking through an eerie mist Once the mist
lifts the 365 degree views are spectacular
until you reach Shira Camp where you can
look up to Uhuru Peak as Kibo towers above
you
A stunning view of Kibo after a dusting of snow overnight

in the world like Everest are part of a range Kilimanjaro is a single mountain
Day 6 - Kilimanjaro Day 3

Hiking Time 6 - 8 hours
Habitat Semi desert
From the Shira Plateau we continue our trek
up a ridge towards Kibo The walk is a gradual
incline that eventually leads us to lunch at
Lava Tower (4700m) This is a challenging
walk and it is not uncommon to feel slight
discomfort and the beginning effects of Acute
Mountain Sickness (AMS)
After lunch we descend quickly through
some of the most stunning scenery you will
ever see to reach Barranco Camp (3900m)
While you end the day at the same elevation
as you started this day is very important

prepare for summit day

Distance 5 km
Hiking Time 4 - 5 hours

ascending this 300m high wall is extremely
challenging Lucky yoursquore joined by an
experienced team of guides and porters who
will sing dance and support you all the way to
the top
Safely on top of Barranco Wall yoursquoll gasp at
breath-taking 360 degree views of never-
ending valleys far-away savannas and

of what will easily be a huge achievement in
your life

COST BREAK-DOWN
reduce their fee and still make a profit is by
cutting other costs Wages are usually the
first to go and some companies purely rely
on tips to pay wages Food and equipment is
usually next
If yoursquore trekking Kilimanjaro make sure
you book with a reputable company and
pay a fee of at least US$1800pp for a local
company or US$2500 for an international
company (due to additional safety
procedures better skilled guides and extra
insurances) Donrsquot risk your life to save a
few dollars
WHY IS KILIMANJARO EXPENSIVE
Herersquos why you should not pay less than US$1850pp to trek Kilimanjaro
There are many horror stories from trekkers
who have paid a cheap local provider and
turned up to realise their fee doesnrsquot cover
many of their costs or worse the company
doesnrsquot exist
Worse still approximately 1000 people each
year are evacuated on stretchers because
their guide did not properly manage their
altitude sickness Some even die
With mandatory park entry and camping
fees ranging from US$800 - US$1000pp
(US$130day) the only way operators can
Costs based on the estimated average cost for a Tanzanian operator based on 10 trekkers on a 7-day Machame Route trek (US$1850pp)

COST BREAK-DOWN
reduce their fee and still make a profit is by
cutting other costs Wages are usually the
first to go and some companies purely rely
on tips to pay wages Food and equipment is
usually next
If yoursquore trekking Kilimanjaro make sure
you book with a reputable company and
pay a fee of at least US$1800pp for a local
company or US$2500 for an international
company (due to additional safety
procedures better skilled guides and extra
insurances) Donrsquot risk your life to save a
few dollars
WHY IS KILIMANJARO EXPENSIVE
Herersquos why you should not pay less than US$1850pp to trek Kilimanjaro
There are many horror stories from trekkers
who have paid a cheap local provider and
turned up to realise their fee doesnrsquot cover
many of their costs or worse the company
doesnrsquot exist
Worse still approximately 1000 people each
year are evacuated on stretchers because
their guide did not properly manage their
altitude sickness Some even die
With mandatory park entry and camping
fees ranging from US$800 - US$1000pp
(US$130day) the only way operators can

ABOUT KILIMANJARO
At 5895m Kilimanjaro is the ldquoWorldrsquos Highest
Free Standing Mountainrdquo Considered to be
the easiest of the ldquo7 Summitsrdquo Kilimanjaro
should not be underestimated and no matter
what your fitness level this trek will challenge
and inspire you The great news is that it is
achievable and most people who take the
time to train and acclimatise will reach the
summit
Having won ldquoAfricarsquos Leading Tourist Attractionrdquo
for the past 3 consecutive years Kilimanjaro
is high on many peoplersquos bucket lists and is
particularly busy between July and September
There are many different routes on Kilimanjaro
but we recommend and use the Machame
or Lemosho routes because of their superior
acclimatisation
Acclimatisation on Kilimanjaro is critical Every
year thousands of trekkers are evacuated
to hospital because they do not acclimatise
properly This is why all of AOLrsquos itineraries
include 7 - 8 day treks and we put a huge
emphasis on safety and going slow We have
a proven safety and summit rate and in the
past 3 years we have successfully taken
100 of our trekkers to Uhuru Point
Kilimanjaro is a fascinating mountain with 5
different ecosystems ranging from rainforest
to arctic glaciers The first recorded ascent
was in 1889 and the summit Uhuru Peak
means ldquofreedomrdquo in Swahili

Day 4 - Kilimanjaro Day 1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation 1800m to 3000m
Distance 11 km
Hiking Time 5 - 7 hours
Habitat Rain forest
The drive from Moshi to Machame Gate takes
about 90 minutes The journey passes through
the village of Machame which is located on the
lower slopes of the mountain After registering
at the gate we walk through the rain forest
on a winding trail up a ridge This trail can be
muddy and slippery and it frequently rains on
this day It is recommended that you bring or
hire good wet weather gear
Day 5 - Kilimanjaro Day 2
- Machame Camp to Shira Camp
- Elevation 3000m to 3800m
- Distance 5 km
- Hiking Time 4 - 6 hours
- Habitat Heather amp Moorland
After breakfast we leave the rain forest and
continue our ascent along a steep and rocky
ridge The climb is more challenging than day
1 and the majority of the morning will be spent
walking through an eerie mist Once the mist
lifts the 365 degree views are spectacular
until you reach Shira Camp where you can
look up to Uhuru Peak as Kibo towers above
you
A stunning view of Kibo after a dusting of snow overnight
DID YOU KNOWKilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world Most of the other huge mountains
in the world like Everest are part of a range Kilimanjaro is a single mountain
Day 6 - Kilimanjaro Day 3
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava
Tower
Elevation 3800m to 3900m via 4700m
Distance 10 km
Hiking Time 6 - 8 hours
Habitat Semi desert
From the Shira Plateau we continue our trek
up a ridge towards Kibo The walk is a gradual
incline that eventually leads us to lunch at
Lava Tower (4700m) This is a challenging
walk and it is not uncommon to feel slight
discomfort and the beginning effects of Acute
Mountain Sickness (AMS)
After lunch we descend quickly through
some of the most stunning scenery you will
ever see to reach Barranco Camp (3900m)
While you end the day at the same elevation
as you started this day is very important
for acclimatisation and will help your body
prepare for summit day
Day 7 - Kilimanjaro Day 4
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp via
Barranco Wall
Elevation 3900m to 4000m
Distance 5 km
Hiking Time 4 - 5 hours
Habitat Alpine desert
After breakfast we leave Barranco Camp to
tackle one of the most exciting parts of our
trek Barranco Wall Despite the well trod path
ascending this 300m high wall is extremely
challenging Lucky yoursquore joined by an
experienced team of guides and porters who
will sing dance and support you all the way to
the top
Safely on top of Barranco Wall yoursquoll gasp at
breath-taking 360 degree views of never-
ending valleys far-away savannas and
millions of fluffy white clouds billowing below
Except for one shorter steep ascent that leads
in to camp the rest of the day is very easy
Jacob our first Kenyan sponsor student to graduate from university joined our July
2016 Kilimanjaro trek to share his story
Day 8 - Kilimanjaro Day 5
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation 4000m to 4600m
Distance 4 km
Hiking Time 4 - 5 hours
Habitat Alpine desert
After breakfast we leave Karanga Camp on
a steady ascending route to Barafu Camp
This trek offers views of both the Kibo and
Mwenzi peaks along with the summit glaciers
from a number of different angles This is
an easy and short trek designed to ensure
you are well acclimatised and rested before
you tackle Uhuru Peak tonight Arriving at
lunch time yoursquoll eat before resting in the
afternoon and evening Jim gets creativeDay 5 Kilimanjaro 2016

after a short break we follow the crater rim
for another hour to Kilimanjarorsquos highest point
Uhuru Peak Standing on the ldquoRoof of Africardquo
yoursquoll undoubtedly feel emotional and proud
of what will easily be a huge achievement in
your life
After a short photo opportunity we begin our
descent back to Barafu Camp
This is the most mentally and physically
challenging portion of the trek Due to a lack
of oxygen it is also the most dangerous and
to be successful you must trust and listen to
your guides every step of the way

ABOUT KILIMANJARO
At 5895m Kilimanjaro is the ldquoWorldrsquos Highest
Free Standing Mountainrdquo Considered to be
the easiest of the ldquo7 Summitsrdquo Kilimanjaro
should not be underestimated and no matter
what your fitness level this trek will challenge
and inspire you The great news is that it is
achievable and most people who take the
time to train and acclimatise will reach the
summit
Having won ldquoAfricarsquos Leading Tourist Attractionrdquo
for the past 3 consecutive years Kilimanjaro
is high on many peoplersquos bucket lists and is
particularly busy between July and September
There are many different routes on Kilimanjaro
but we recommend and use the Machame
or Lemosho routes because of their superior
acclimatisation
Acclimatisation on Kilimanjaro is critical Every
year thousands of trekkers are evacuated
to hospital because they do not acclimatise
properly This is why all of AOLrsquos itineraries
include 7 - 8 day treks and we put a huge
emphasis on safety and going slow We have
a proven safety and summit rate and in the
past 3 years we have successfully taken
100 of our trekkers to Uhuru Point
Kilimanjaro is a fascinating mountain with 5
different ecosystems ranging from rainforest
to arctic glaciers The first recorded ascent
was in 1889 and the summit Uhuru Peak
means ldquofreedomrdquo in Swahili

ABOUT KILIMANJARO
At 5895m Kilimanjaro is the ldquoWorldrsquos Highest
Free Standing Mountainrdquo Considered to be
the easiest of the ldquo7 Summitsrdquo Kilimanjaro
should not be underestimated and no matter
what your fitness level this trek will challenge
and inspire you The great news is that it is
achievable and most people who take the
time to train and acclimatise will reach the
summit
Having won ldquoAfricarsquos Leading Tourist Attractionrdquo
for the past 3 consecutive years Kilimanjaro
is high on many peoplersquos bucket lists and is
particularly busy between July and September
There are many different routes on Kilimanjaro
but we recommend and use the Machame
or Lemosho routes because of their superior
acclimatisation
Acclimatisation on Kilimanjaro is critical Every
year thousands of trekkers are evacuated
to hospital because they do not acclimatise
properly This is why all of AOLrsquos itineraries
include 7 - 8 day treks and we put a huge
emphasis on safety and going slow We have
a proven safety and summit rate and in the
past 3 years we have successfully taken
100 of our trekkers to Uhuru Point
Kilimanjaro is a fascinating mountain with 5
different ecosystems ranging from rainforest
to arctic glaciers The first recorded ascent
was in 1889 and the summit Uhuru Peak
means ldquofreedomrdquo in Swahili

COST BREAK-DOWN
reduce their fee and still make a profit is by
cutting other costs Wages are usually the
first to go and some companies purely rely
on tips to pay wages Food and equipment is
usually next
If yoursquore trekking Kilimanjaro make sure
you book with a reputable company and
pay a fee of at least US$1800pp for a local
company or US$2500 for an international
company (due to additional safety
procedures better skilled guides and extra
insurances) Donrsquot risk your life to save a
few dollars
WHY IS KILIMANJARO EXPENSIVE
Herersquos why you should not pay less than US$1850pp to trek Kilimanjaro
There are many horror stories from trekkers
who have paid a cheap local provider and
turned up to realise their fee doesnrsquot cover
many of their costs or worse the company
doesnrsquot exist
Worse still approximately 1000 people each
year are evacuated on stretchers because
their guide did not properly manage their
altitude sickness Some even die
With mandatory park entry and camping
fees ranging from US$800 - US$1000pp
(US$130day) the only way operators can
Costs based on the estimated average cost for a Tanzanian operator based on 10 trekkers on a 7-day Machame Route trek (US$1850pp)

ABOUT KILIMANJARO
At 5895m Kilimanjaro is the ldquoWorldrsquos Highest
Free Standing Mountainrdquo Considered to be
the easiest of the ldquo7 Summitsrdquo Kilimanjaro
should not be underestimated and no matter
what your fitness level this trek will challenge
and inspire you The great news is that it is
achievable and most people who take the
time to train and acclimatise will reach the
summit
Having won ldquoAfricarsquos Leading Tourist Attractionrdquo
for the past 3 consecutive years Kilimanjaro
is high on many peoplersquos bucket lists and is
particularly busy between July and September
There are many different routes on Kilimanjaro
but we recommend and use the Machame
or Lemosho routes because of their superior
acclimatisation
Acclimatisation on Kilimanjaro is critical Every
year thousands of trekkers are evacuated
to hospital because they do not acclimatise
properly This is why all of AOLrsquos itineraries
include 7 - 8 day treks and we put a huge
emphasis on safety and going slow We have
a proven safety and summit rate and in the
past 3 years we have successfully taken
100 of our trekkers to Uhuru Point
Kilimanjaro is a fascinating mountain with 5
different ecosystems ranging from rainforest
to arctic glaciers The first recorded ascent
was in 1889 and the summit Uhuru Peak
means ldquofreedomrdquo in Swahili
