KIELDER WATER & FOREST PARKNORTHUMBERLAND

Kielder Water & Forest Park is officially England’s best tourism experience (Visit England 2013) so what better excuse is there to pay us a visit.

There’s a whole host of activities you can do in your own time such as walking, cycling and mountain biking, as well as an exciting year round events programme.

This handy guide should help make the most of your time or plan an upcoming visit. For more information, go to www.visitkielder.com or if you’re onsite, pop into one of our three visitor centres – Tower Knowe, Leaplish Waterside Park or Kielder Castle.

Enjoy your greater outdoors

Calvert Trust Kielder opened their doors on 27 September 1984 and during the past 30 years has shown over 150,000 people that “it’s what you CAN do that counts”.

In 30 years the centre has grown from an adventure centre primarily for schools and groups, to a popular and award winning holiday centre available to everyone.

To celebrate this milestone, there will be a 30th Birthday Celebration Ball in October hosted by special guest, George Clarke who revealed his extraordinary Sky Den tree house on his TV series George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. See www.calvert-trust.org.uk/kielder for more information.

Even if you’re only visiting the Park for just a day, why not drop in to Calvert Trust Kielder and take part in one of their exciting outdoor adventure sessions.

There’s something for everyone: Sharp Shooters Days, Water Days, High Ropes Days and Climb Days.

See www.visitkielder.com/events.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CALVERT TRUST

Last year, an area covering Kielder Water & Forest Park and Northumberland National Park achieved International Dark Sky Park Designation for the high quality of the starscape thanks to minimal light pollution.

At nearly 580sq miles, this is the largest Dark Sky Park in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

To make it easy for people to view our star attractions, Dark Sky Discovery Sites are being created throughout the International Dark Sky Park and the North Pennines AONB.

One of these sites is located in the small village of Stonehaugh, near Kielder, where a stargazing pavilion has recently been built. Find out more here www.kielderartandarchitecture.com.

We’re fortunate to have Kielder Observatory in the heart of the Dark Sky Park and as the nights draw in, check out www.kielderobservatory.org to book a family friendly astronomy event, public observing or aurora night.

‘Britain’s most beautiful marathon’ returns for the fifth year and brings with it a whole host of activities throughout the weekend for all the family.

The main marathon will take place on Sunday 5 October and follow an off-road route along the Lakeside Way, a trail that stretches right around the shoreline of Kielder Water.

Over the weekend there will also be children’s races, a10k race and a Run-Bike-Run relay race where individuals and teams can tackle the marathon distance by running 11km, cycling 26km and then running 5km.

For more information or to book a place on any of the events go to www.kieldermarathon.com

In our autumn 2014 issue...

Kielder Water will be making a splash in September as swimmers arrive for the first dedicated open water swim.

The Kielder Open Water Swim takes place on Sunday 7 September and participants can choose from the classic mile, a 3.8km Iron distance swim or the ultimate test – a 10km swimming Marathon.

Peter Pattinson, Guest Services Manager (Operations) at Northumbrian Water, said: “We are very excited about the first open water swimming event. While our reservoir can be a great place to enjoy organised activities like this, it is very deep and cold and can be a dangerous place to swim.

“Under normal circumstances public swimming is never allowed. The Kielder Open Water Swim is a unique event organised by professionals and we are working in partnership with event directors to make sure that special safety measures are in place.”
