kiaMAE’s Tutorial
Making a Chibi
Melodious Hydros
In this Tutorial I’ll be drawing my original character Mel as a chibi.
Step 1I don’t know about anyone else, but I always start out with a basic outline.
Step 2I draw in my basic line art.
Step 3I add Hair, Clothes, or anything else I want the character to have.
Step 4When the line art is to my satisfaction I discard the outline sketch.
Step 5First I make all of the appropriate layers, then I start coloring. I prefer to start with the skin first.
Step 6After I pick a skin color, then I start to add shadowing. The purple/pinkish color I used below is a technique I learned from an artist who calls herself “Eori”. She is also a member of Manga Bullet, so go find her if you like this technique. In the future I will look for her tutorial and link it to the club with her permission of course.
Step 7After all of that purple and brown stuff is added I blend it in.
Step 8Now for my favorite part; making him look pretty. This step is your own preference depending on your taste and whatever your character represents. My character Mel is Bishounen (beautiful boy). He is also gay (my manga is Yaoi or BL if that’s what you want to call it). I like to make him cross-dress and wear make-up. Today only make-up. I chose blue.
Step 9After I feel he’s pretty enough, then I color in his clothes and any object he’s holding. (In this example he’s holding a mug)
Step 10So next I start on his hair. (He’s getting more beautiful by the minute.)Let’s finish him up, shall we?
Step 11I added some highlights here and finishing touches. Hmm.. I think he needs something more.
Step 12Much better isn’t it? Now he’s finished and looking more beautiful than ever.
So what do you guys think? This was my first time making a tutorial and my 2nd time ever using PowerPoint. This is my way of doing things. Now it’s time to see yours.
