Join us for a day of celebration of experiences, creativity and ideas about sparking imagination to engage in reading and writing as pleasure and play.

Family and community literacy day

• All events are free of charge.

• Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

10.10 am - 10.50am Gcina Mhlope, one of South Africa’s best-known storytellers, will share exciting local stories in a variety of languages.

10.50am - 11.20am Elinor Sisulu, human rights activist and passionate supporter of children’s literature, talks about her own work in children’s literature and about the Puku Foundation.

11.20am - 12.00pm FunDza’s library on a cellphone is available to all - come

easy-to-read, ensuring that you’ll want to come back for

12.10pm - 1.15pm Nal’ibali presents some of its award-winning ideas around promoting reading and The Jungle Theatrepresents a show ‘How Stories Began...’ a story from Nal’ibali’s rich collection.

1.45pm - 2.00pm EmileYX and Mixed Mense will perform two songs, showing the power of hip hop in reaching out to

Neo Mathetsa will talk about setting up the Underground Library in Mohlakeng, EmileYX, founder of Black Noise and Heal the Hood, will talk about his hip hop work

12.30pm - 1.30pm Lynn Joffe offers an interactive, creative workshop for

1.30pm - 2.30pm African Storybook Project presents a workshop where participants adapt an African children’s story for their own community.

2.30pm - 3.30pm Nicole Levine takes participants on a journey into their own imagination through drama, movement and art.

Jill Joubert, well-known art teacher and puppeteer, takes participants through the process of making puppets and presenting a puppet show based on an African folk-tale. Participation needs to be pre-booked – e-mail [email protected] if you would like to take part - !rst come, !rst served.

The Bookery hosts a comfortable spot for discussion about exciting ideas for school or community libraries of any size.
