Sitting down to write
this I can see some newly ar-
rived daffodils in my garden,
bringing some much needed
color after the long winter.
When you are applying for
accreditation and writing about
CPD it may be useful to think
of gardening, of the bulbs you
chose to plant, your reasons
for choosing them and how
they enhance your garden
when they flower.
Criterion 6 in the
application process is made up
of three sub-criteria. Criterion
6. I ask you to describe a CPD
activity relevant to your area
of practice that you have un-
dertaken in the year before
applying for accreditation. The
Professional Association Re-
search Network (PARN 1999)
defines CPD as any process or
activity that provides added
value to the capability for the
appropriate execution of pro-
fessional and technical
duties, often termed
competence of course
a CPD activity can be
many things for exam-
ple , a conference or a
workshop you have
attended, a book
you’ve read or a dis-
cussion group of col-
leagues. This is not
meant to be definitive
list, as the activities
that applicants write
about are many and
varied. Here you are being
asked to describe the bulbs
you have planted.
Criteria 6.2. asks you to pro-
vide a reason or reasons for
choosing the activity with
reference to your practice.
What interested you about it?
Were clients presenting with a
particular issue and had you
identified a gap in your knowl-
edge? Or perhaps you had read
an article that had sparked
your interest? Maybe you’d
identified a gap in your border
that needed some extra spring
colour.
Criterion 6.3. asks
you to show how the activity
has influenced your practice,
that is, your work with clients.
You may want to think of
some specific ways in which
you have incorporated what
you have learnt. Did the CPD
activity, for example, deepen
your understanding of a par-
ticular issue or approach? And
did it alter how you worked
with a client? So the bulbs have
flowered and you can now see
how they have enhanced the
rest of the garden.
Here are some extra
tips when writing criterion 6.
Put the date of the activity in
your application and make sure
that all or part of it has fallen in
the previous year, i.e. in the 12
months before the date of
your application.
Your normal supervisory ar-
rangements do not qualify as
CPD as they are seen to be
part of your normal practice.
However, extra supervision or
consultancy that you arrange
to meet a specific need in your
practice could be used. Also
remember that career devel-
opment is not the same as
CPD.
Sometimes applicants
choose to write about all their
CPD activities over the year.
Whilst the assessors are often
impressed by the amount that
applicants undertake, choosing
to write about them all leaves
little room for any detail. It
may be worth considering
writing about one activity and
writing about it in more depth.
Remember that you only have
900 words to write about the
whole of criterion 6.
To help with prepa-
ration for counselor accredita-
tion, BACP organizes work-
shops and surgeries around
UK. Workshops cover all ap-
plication criteria. Surgeries are
short individual sessions, ap-
propriate for people who are
concerned about one or two
particular criteria. They are
popular so early booking for
either is advised (see
www.bacp.co.uk)

Building Counselling in Ethiopia New Partnership with
Ethiopia Counsellors
Recently a team of counsellors
and managers from Ethiopia
met with KAPC to discuss
ways in which we can help to
strengthen the growth of
counselling. A Workplan was
drawn up which will involve
KAPC in exchange visits for
consultation and training. It is
an exciting development and
we are delighted to be in-
volved in the long term growth
of counselling in Ethiopia.

Certificate In Marriage And Family Therapy Course
P A G E 4 K A P C Q U A R T E R L Y
WHO
The course is open to trained coun-
sellors who are interested in devel-
oping professional counselling skills
in marriage and family therapy. The
course is either one-month full-time
or 3-months part-time held in the
evenings. Each course is facilitated
by professionally qualified trainers.
The use of the internet is an inte-
gral part of the course and partici-
pants will be provided with their
own web space.
CONTENT & METHODOLOGY
This course is both theoretical and
practical. The theoretical aspects
are based upon the psychological
theories that form the foundation
of marriage and family therapy.
Contemporary marriage and family
issues are explored and explained
using various theoretical models.
The practical aspects focus on self-
exploration and self-awareness.
Participants reflect upon their life
experiences in order to gain a bet-
ter understanding of “who they
are”.
The practical skills and techniques
of counselling are developed in
groups of three participants. These
small groups give ample opportunity
for participants to learn and prac-
tice counselling skills and tech-
niques.
During the course participants are
encouraged to actively contribute
to the learning environment. At the
end of the course participants sub-
mit a video recording of a counsel-
ling session which gives evidence of
their practical skills. A written com-
mentary accompanies the re-
cording, describing how the theo-
ries of counselling are utilised dur-
ing the session.

PD In Mombasa
Personal Development should be a
top priority in every counsellor's
agenda. Although KAPC Mombasa
is very committed to uphold a high
standard and many interesting top-
ics are conducted, only a few col-
leagues use our services, but for the
last few months we had some very
exciting PD's where attending coun-
sellors came as far Malindi and
Kilifi. The sharing brought much
learning; new areas of knowledge
opened up and are continuously
enhancing the attending couunsel-
lors' horizon.
Our sincere wish is for more train-
ees and practicing counsellors to
attend our PD which takes place
every third Saturday of the month.
