I would like to thank our teachers and support staff for their commitment, energy and dedication to providing the highest quality education and having such an impact on the development of the whole child both in and outside the classroom.
Parents, I would also like to thank you for your support because the positive partnership between home and school makes a major contribution to your child’s overall progress. As the pupils now enter another phase on their educational journey we look forward to supporting them and helping them to build on their achievements to date.

Mr D a mi a n M cD o n a ldGue s t of Ho n o ur
My career with Hasting’s began with a part time job at the Europa Hotel, collecting glasses at functions, parties and events. My knowledge and skills were developed further by the management team at the Europa over several years, to a level where I had a great grasp of food and beverages services. I applied for my first supervisor position, and was appointed Bar Supervisor at the Europa Hotel. My management career quickly developed and I was soon to be appointed Assistant Manager of the Food and Beverage Department. In 2014, I graduated from the University of Ulster, completing a course called the Management Ambassador Programme. This course was developed in partnership with Hastings Hotels and was created to advance future leaders in the hospitality industry. After completing this course, I managed the Food and Beverage Department for several years before assisting with the opening of the new Hasting’s Grand Central Hotel. I helped develop and plan the opening of this project for over two years before becoming the Food and Beverage Manager of their new flagship property.
I am now a competent senior manager within a 5-star hotel, leading a team of over 100 employees. I am responsible for the training and development of the future workforce within our company, as well as ensuring that my team exceed the expectations of the guests who come to visit us.

Be Strong OnlineAmbassadorsHaving completed the Be Strong Online Ambassador training in October 2018, which is a digital resilience programme for young people from the Diana Award Anti-Bullying Campaign and Vodafone, St Ciaran’s College Ballygawley are empowering their young people to be positive online role models to their peers and develop skills in areas such as leadership, teamwork, creativity, organisation, kindness, empathy, technology and public speaking.
The key message of the Be Strong Online Ambassador programme is “Young people can change the world”. St Ciaran’s Be Strong Online Ambassadors pledged to share their knowledge and find creative ways to let their whole school know about the Be Strong Online programme and support their peers with online issues.
Above is a photo of the St Ciaran’s Be Strong Online Ambassadors who completed the training along with their teachers, Mrs Michelle Donnelly and Mrs Nuala Muldoon.
UK Team Maths ChallengeIn March 2019 alongside Niall kavanagh and Kevin Hughes two of our year 10 students, Neil Campbell and Conor Kerr represented St Ciaran’s College in the UK Team Maths Challenge. The UKMT Team Challenge promotes mathematical dexterity,
teamwork and communication skills and these students conducted themselves in a very professional manner, representing St Ciaran’s with pride. This gave our pupils the opportunity to compete against pupils from other schools in their region.
Geography NewsAs part of Careers Focus Week, the Geography Department invited Ulster University Lecturers Dr Gavan Rafferty (Course Director – PgDip/MSc Community Planning and Governance ) and Dr Linda McElduff (Lecturer in Planning and Placement Coordinator) in to deliver a very informative presentation to all our Year 10 pupils. The presentation discussed the links between Geography and (town/urban/rural/regional) Planning, and the planning degree (Integrated Masters in Planning, Regeneration and Development) that is available in Ulster University Jordanstown. This was a great insight into one of the pathways open to our students through the study of Geography.
Year 10 Science EventsIn November, 14 students from 10NW, 10FG and 10RN attended a BBC Young Reporters for the Environment workshop in Magherafelt Council Offices. They learned how to report on issues in different ways, using video, photography and written format. It was a very enjoyable day and the students were fully engaged in the process. Following on from that workshop, 5 groups entered a competition where
they had to submit an article, in any of the three formats entitled ‘Litter Less’ in their local community.
In April, three year 10 groups attended the SciFest Competition in St Mary’s College, Derry. The groups showcased the projects and were interviewed by two different sets of judges. On the day, Chloe Quinn and Hannah McVeigh came runners up with their project ‘Wi-Fire’. The girls are now through to the SciFest National Final in Dublin in November 2019, where they will compete for the Science Foundation Ireland ISEF Award.
There are currently 4 year 10 groups working on projects for the Sentinus Young Innovators competition that will take place in UUJ on 24th June, 2019.
Bring IT OnOn 26th February 2019 James Connor from Sentinus delivered a very insightful BringITon presentation and workshop to Year 10 students about the careers on offer in the ICT/Computing sector. Darren Clarke was the lucky student who won an Amazon Echo Dot at this event.
mTech PartnershipSt Ciaran’s College, Ballygawley, like all schools, faces the challenge of preparing our young people for a knowledge intensive economy. We were delighted when Diane Morrow asked us to take part in a holistic Mtech Academy programme which would provide a project-based, technology-centric curriculum that addresses the specific requirements of students and teachers, thus preparing them for new opportunities in the digital world.During their English class this year, 10FG students worked on a problem based learning activity investigating the power of mobile technology in creating smart towns and cities. Throughout the year these students engaged with industry and investigated some of the leading technological advances in 5G, AI, Autonomous Vehicles and Sensor Technology. Pupils worked collectively to create ideas for the future and got the opportunity to pitch their findings on the stage in Barcelona.
Omagh ShowRionach Hackett, Katie-Rois McCann and Ellen McGirr weere succesful participants in the Public Speaking Competition at the recent Omagh Show. Rionach was third and Katie Rois and Ellen were highly commended.
YPI PresentationsThe winning YPI group deserve recognition for their presentation on Star Breakers Special Olympics Club – Aine Sherry, Cal Sherry, Caitlin Quinn and Ruairi O’Sullivan won £2,000 for their chosen charity following their presentation at the YPI final.
WW1 Battlefields ProjectNiall Begley and Conor Kerr from 10NW represented St Ciaran’s College on a recent EA trip to the Battlefields of the First World War. During their four day tour of the Ypres Salient and the Somme, with students from twenty-five other schools, the boys learned about key battles and the role of Irish soldiers who fought the Germans in the trenches of Northern France and Belgium. At the Menin Gate they attended the Last Post Ceremony and in Thiepval Wood they visited orginal front line trenches.
Modern LanguagesYear 10 pupils enjoyed an International languages quiz during Term 1. Pupils had the opportunity to display their cultural awareness and develop their understanding of languages.
In October 2018, seventy four Year 10 pupils participated in a regional Gael Linn interschools quiz in the Glenavon Hotel, Cookstown. Pupils enjoyed participating in the quiz and the céilí and craic afterward! One of our teams came first and qualified for the Ulster final in the Ashburn Hotel, Lurgan where they came first again. The winning team members were Blathnáid Donnelly, Conor Kerr, Meabh Canavan and Neil Campbell.
In February 2019, Year 10 pupils participated in a workshop hosted by NICLT highlighting the importance of languages in the workplace.
Bon Voyage to some of our Year 10 pupils who are going on the French trip in October, and Ádh Mór to pupils attending Irish Summer Colleges in the Gaeltacht. Well done to Ellen Mc Kenna who was awarded a scholarship from Gael Linn and congratulations to Nicole Treanor who also won a scholarship and is currently in Dunlewy Irish College.
