Welcome to the Stamford Welland Academy Newsletter Issue #14
July 2018
Another school year is now completed and what an action packed last half term it’s been!
Two weeks ago we enjoyed a wonderful evening at Stamford Corn Exchange, celebrating the achievements of a number of
students at our annual prize giving event. We were lucky enough to have Rob Persani from Rutland Radio join us, and he gave
a fantastic address about what advice he would give to his younger self.
Last week saw our hugely successful sports day, with all of our students actively involved. It was great to see many of our year
11s come back and help – a real testament to the high regard that students hold SWA. A big thank you to Miss Campling who
did a sterling job in organising the event.
This week was our trips day with yr 7 and 8 visiting Twinlakes and yr 9 and 10 visiting Wicksteed Park. A big thank you to all
the staff who accompanied the students on the trip, and also to those who led activities back in school, for those students not
on the trips.
On Wednesday this week, the whole school took part in SWA’s very own Race for Life. This was another brilliant event
organised by the super talented Miss Campling and it was a real display of what is at the real heart of SWA. Students were
invited to write their own tributes to family and friends affected by cancer and these were poignantly displayed in the school
hall. It was clear that cancer really has effected a large number of our SWA community, and what better way to pay tribute to
this than a whole school Race for Life. The current amount of money raised is an impressive £2444.36 and the Just Giving
page is still open should anyone still wish to donate https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/stamford-welland-academy-1 .
The end of term always brings with it some goodbyes, this term is no exception. Leaving us for pastures new are: Mrs Wallis,
Mr Wilson, Mrs Oliver, Mr Bond and Mrs Parker. We wish them all the luck in the world in their adventures beyond SWA.
It has certainly been an action packed first term as Headteacher for me at SWA. I’ve loved every minute of it and I really am
looking forward to the exciting future ahead.
Have a fabulous, restful summer and I look forward to welcoming the students back in September, refreshed and ready for the
challenges of the new academic year. Victoria Lloyd, Headteacher

CMAT Inaugural Equestrian Events 2017-18: Gymkhana & Show
Jumping During the summer term two separate events
helped extend the students boundaries of learning,
gymkhana and show jumping, which took place
between SWA and SVC. Both afternoons were
embraced fully by the individual school teams, with
a great atmosphere of competition. All students
achieved in a high quality learning environment,
showing great resilience, aspiration and
understanding. We were very proud of all the
team.
Congratulations must go to SVC for winning both events, but SWA were magnanimous in second place and
great sportsmanship has to be credited. The results of the show jumping could not have been closer, with SVC
winning by 4 points, literally the difference of one fence down or refusal. The gymkhana reflected a similar
result, but great fun was had by all involved.
Hat’s off to the parents taking part in the
apple bobbing!
To sum up the experience we share two
quotes, of many, taken from parents at the
events:
“What an amazing afternoon watching the
show jumping. The team did so well and
should be very proud of what they have
achieved.” Alex Kennedy (SWA parent)
“What a fantastic idea and afternoon,
watching my daughter get so much
enjoyment from competing in the inter-
school gymkhana was wonderful and
reminded me of my younger days. So
satisfying to see the beaming smiles. Thank you.” Lucinda Harper (SVC parent)
Thanks must also go to the dedicated staff involved with the team both in school and our home ground,
Grasslands Equestrian Centre. Bring on 2018 – 2019, the gauntlet is down and the team will raise the bar!

Team Tolethorpe Well, what an amazing evening we had! We started with a lovely picnic in the
grounds of Tolethorpe Hall. The director then took us on a private tour of the
theatre and told us all about how they decided to set the play, from logistics
and staging to costume and set design.
We don't want to give anything away but the play was enjoyed by everyone
and we're already planning next year's visit!
Well done to our staff and students who were wonderful ambassadors for our
school. It was a pleasure to take you and see you enjoy 'The Merry Wives of
Windsor'!
Watch this space for information about 'Twelfth Night' in 2019!

Thomas Cook Visit On Friday 13th, we were very fortunate to have Paul Smith, Thomas Cook’s
archivist, come and speak to our Year 7 students.
We have been learning about the theme of ‘travel’ all term and Paul came
to show us a variety of travel materials including some of the oldest
brochures and travel adverts in the UK!
He spoke in detail about Thomas Cook’s 177 year history and how it all
began with a train journey from Leicester to Loughborough!
The students were able to identify all sorts of changes of
travel over time. We identified significant differences in
the language used and the prices. Even more interesting
was the idea that Thomas Cook offered holidays to
countries that don’t even exist today!
Paul Smith reminded students that the founder, Thomas
Cook himself, believed that holidays should improve the
mind and body. How can you use your summer holiday
to make sure you return to school healthy and ready to
learn?

National Writing Competition Some of our Year 7 pupils entered a national writing competition
run by Values Based Education and were thrilled to hear that a
number of pupils were shortlisted!
Sue Webb, one of the competition
organisers, came into school to
hand out certificates and badges to
the shortlisted pupils. All pupils
shortlisted will be published in a
values based education book in
September. We are very proud of
their achievements.

Access Cambridge Archaeology Another wonderful day at Great Gidding with Access Cambridge Archaeology, digging for medieval pottery.
Scholar’s Programme ‘Why was there a French Revolution?’ was the title of the final
dissertation piece for 24 of our Year 7 & 8 students on the Scholar’s
Programme. Drawing upon their own research as well as working
with PhD tutor, Joe Harley, the students have now reached their
results.
On Thursday 12th July, Year 7 & 8 students attended the Scholar’s
Programme Graduation at SOAS University, London. Students had an
immersive day reflecting on their experiences and the knowledge they
have gained within the subject. They were also taken around a world
class university which had its own museum gallery which was
supported by the British Museum and were overwhelmed by the
outstanding library which is home to approximately 1.5 million books.
Well done to all the students
who took part, with special
mention to Sophia Cooke in
Year 7 who received a First Class final grade. Sophie Birch, in Year 8,
was just two points off a First Class final grade and received a 2:1.
Ben Doyle, Caitlyn McIntyre, Lia McFadyen, Holly Seaton, Charlie
Buckley, Carrie Miller and Abbie Blair also received 2:1 grades.
Well done to all involved with the programme, Jo Harley agreed they were an inspiring and proactive group
with lots of energy and drive.
Dracula We were amazingly proud of one of our Year 7 English classes on 9th July as they presented their very own
version of ‘Dracula’ by Sam Stoker.
Inspired by their study of the book, the whole class decided to work together as
a team to pull together their very own production. Carrie Miller was elected by
the class as director and with only a few days to put a production together, the
cast and backstage crew were appointed.
Sophia Cooke and Lia McFadyen carried out the exceptionally complex task of
editing the original play down from 1hr 30mins to 45mins.
With no staff input, the students directed, produced, choreographed, made
props, designed costumes, carried out lighting and sound effects, made a
programme and performed to the rest of their year group. Rehearsing in their own time over the course of
two weeks, this class have made us very proud.
Demonstrating our core values of
teamwork, aspiration, resilience (when
things went wrong!) and most of all a
love of learning. The desire to work on
a production of a curriculum based text
in their own time speaks volumes for all
these students. It was a pleasure to
watch you all perform, overcoming
nerves, supporting each other and
seeing you all enjoying yourselves with
your friends made us very proud. Well
done to you all!

When Becky finds an old photo in a box under her mum’s bed, everything she
thought she knew comes crashing down. The only place she finds comfort is at the
Butterfly Garden with her new friend, Rosa May. But with her wild ways, and
unpredictable temper, is Rosa May hiding something as well? In the heat of the sun-
drenched summer, it seems that Becky is the only one in the dark……
Remember that the library is also open for Homework Clubs:

Session 6 - Knitting Club
On the 26th June Mrs Griffin took our students on a visit to the NICU at Peterborough Hospital to deliver all
of the blankets, premature baby hats, mittens, bootees, and bonding squares, that they had knitted.
We were greeted by the Ward Manager Debbie Webber, who took time out of her busy day to accept our
boxes of knitted items and told us all about the unit and we were also lucky enough to have a tour around,
although we were unable to actually see any new born babies. The students really enjoyed their experience of
seeing what happens in a Neonatal Baby Unit.
Knitting Club is held every Tuesday 3pm – 4pm in the Library
Beyond the Curriculum
Physical Education News Sports Day
We had a fantastic day on 11th July when all our children were involved in Sports Day. As well as traditional
track and field events, our Sports department organized a tug-of-war, Rounders, enzone, new age curling and
water challenges to ensure everyone could be involved.
Final house points were calculated and Austen took the glory with 701 points, closely followed by Da Vinci
with 611 and Newton with 532. Well done to everyone.
British Athletics Championships
A beautiful day was had when attending the British Athletics Championships with Miss Campling and Mr Isaac,
at Birmingham Alexander Stadium.
Cricket
The 5th July was a glorious afternoon to play cricket against Bourne Academy at Uffington Cricket Group. Well
done to the whole Year 7 & 8 team who did themselves proud and were doing so well until a last bat wicket
from the opposition caused them to lose by 5 runs. An excellent match all round.
Well done to Ben Doyle who took player of the match.
Race for Life
On 18th July, Miss Campling oraganised a whole school, Race for Life, and WOW,
what an amazing day it was!
Staff and students ran together, and students posted poignant messages of who
they were running for in our school hall.
It was amazing to see the whole school community joining in a combined effort to raise money to help find a
cure for a horrific disease.
The original target was £1,000, and thanks to everyone’s generosity, we have raised over £2,400!! Thank-you
to everyone who supported the event, and a special thank-you to Mr West, our local farmer, who kindly
allowed us to use his fields. We were also very lucky to have kind sponsorship from Morrisons and Pabulum,
who donated water bottles and fresh fruit for afterwards.
Thank-you to everyone who was involved!
Going the extra mile
One of our Year 7 students went the extra mile, supporting Race for Life, with her
fundraising. Chloe Gregory took the decision to knit different coloured bows for
all the different types of cancers that exist. She then sold them at our Race for Life
and has made a whopping £59.40. Well done Chloe on all your hard work. In
addition, Chloe also raised £65.45 in sponsorship for the race.
Parallel Curriculum
Congratulations to Kade van Der Merwe, Georgia Gunn, Rosie Turp & Ethan Kirby who represented SWA in
the inaugural CMAT Outdoor challenge competition. They were tested in fire, water, sharp tools, canoeing,
navigation, camp craft and physical challenges. They returned victors. Well done team!
Also competing were teams from our other CMAT schools, Swavesey Village College, Ely Village College,
Sawtry Village College, Nene Park Academy and North Cambridge Academy,

Summer Holiday Homework We all know that the summer holidays are the perfect opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy some free time
away from learning and the routine of school. However, several studies have shown that students who fail to
read or write regularly over the extended break can lose as much as two months’ worth of knowledge by
their return to school in September.
To ensure that our students are able to keep moving in the right direction, we have provided two types of
summer holiday homework.
Year 7 and 8 students have a summer reading and writing challenge. They need to select any six activities from
the bingo sheet on Show My Homework. You could do one per week or get them all done in July!
Year 9 and 10 students need to access the website www.Senecalearning.com
1. Year 9 students need to complete all activities in the ‘AQA Macbeth’ course and have spent at least
one hour of lesson time on this already. They also need to complete their plan and cue cards for their
GCSE Speaking and Listening assessment. All information has been given to students in lesson time
and this exam is booked in from the 17th September.
2. Year 10 students need to add all four literature courses (‘AQA Macbeth’, ‘AQA A Christmas Carol’,
‘AQA Poetry Power and Conflict’ and ‘AQA An Inspector Calls’) to their user area and complete at
least two of these courses. Each class has already spent at least one hour of lesson time on this
already.
All of this information is already on Show My Homework and the deadline for every year group is Friday 7th
September 2018.
I hope you all have a wonderful break and look forward to seeing you again in September ready to learn!
