California Utilities changed the way they charge for
energy based on when customers use it. Energy
costs more during times of peak demand, which can occur anytime – but is most likely to happen during the
summer. Peak hours during the summer (May 1 – October 31, 2017) are weekdays between 11 a.m. and 6
p.m. Weekends and holidays are considered off-peak. Prices are lower during these low-demand times.

If your business is enrolled in a Time of Use Plus plan, that means you must participate in Reduce Your Use
Days. When a Reduce Your Use event day is called, it’s important to conserve electricity because it will cost
significantly more during 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can also manage your energy use and lower your bill by
Did you know that in 2016 all
businesses in San Diego transitioned to
a Whenergy® rate plan? It includes
electricity pricing based on the time of
day (when) electricity is used.

Whenergy® Rate Plans
Time of Use
Electricity prices on this plan are
slightly higher during the summer
between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
On this plan, participation in
Reduce Your Use event days is not
required.
Time of Use Plus
Electricity prices throughout the year are slightly lower
except during Reduce Your Use event days, when the
demand for energy is higher than usual. On event days,
electricity prices will be higher so conservation is critical.
Participation in Reduce Your Use event days is
mandatory when enrolled in this plan. No more than 18
event days can be called in a calendar year.
