1 PURPOSE The DREDGE OPERATION MONITORING SYSTEM offered by VPC & SPE was designed to especially enhance mining operations. This positioning system will prove valuable in the dredging industry. When installed the DREDGE OPERATION MONITORING SYSTEM will offer information to the dredge master and to the operation manager about: # Dredging model indicating obstacles, intercalated layers etc. # Field limits, slope tilts, dredge levels, tolerance levels # Center Lines including distance from actual line, manual or automatically choosing
next center line (import via ACAD – dxf or dwg files) # Thickness to be dredged at the position of the dredge # Actual position of dredger (typical accuracy < 2 m) # Present position of dredging tool (clamshell, backhoe, cutter head/-wheel, plain
suction head, tumbler) # Horizontal and vertical deviation of the suction pipe by integrating onboard
measurement tools # alerts if dredging tool is endangered by means of exceeding horizontal or vertical
limits # Productive and non-productive operating times # Success of area-wide dredging by preparation of informative maps, cross sections and
quantity surveys 2 DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION Relevant data of dredging plans can either be generated by VPC or be placed at VPC & SPE disposal by the customer. These data are integrated in the software of the custom-build computer, before it will be installed on the dredger. The position of the dredger will be determined by DGPS (GPS on board, reference station on shore). The reference station data is transferred to the computer by radio. The system is operational with reduced accuracy even without presence of a reference station.

The depth, inclination and deviation of the dredging tool will be determined by on-board measuring tools while its position will be taken off a digital compass. These positional data of the dredging tool will be transferred to the computer and interpreted by its software. Changes in water level will be integrated manually or automatically by optional radio gauge or by the DGPS-system (please refer to the typical height accuracy of DGPS Systems). By a optional echo-sound device the dredged area will be scanned continuously and changes of morphology of the bottom of the dredging area is indicated. Alternative for slow moving dredgers a 360° sonar device is available to scan the surrounding area. The range of the sonar is a direct function of the depth, i.e. for a 30m deep pit the coverage is about 100m. In addition to the dredger operation further technical data of the dredger or other related tools can optionally be registered related to the actual position of the dredger. All data can be analysed using the office program. Furthermore, devices like sieves, booster stations, conveyor belts etc. can be remotely controlled from the MARPO system. Alternatively the MARPO can be used to remotely run and control the dredger from the site office or even through the internet. The positional data handled by the computer can be viewed by the dredge master on a touch-screen monitor and will be presented by three graphs. (graph I: position of the dredger, graph II: position of the dredging tool, graph III: 3D-presentation of the dredging area, graph IV: data of other equipment). Positional and time data are being updated and saved on hard disc constantly and can easily be transferred to the operation manager onboard or at the headquarter for further interpretation with the included interpretation software (among others preparation of maps of dredging areas/dredged thickness/depth-contour intervals, cross-sections, calculation of dredged volumes and many more). The included office program allows the manager to review the technical and economical factors of the dredging works such as the dredging performance, quality and effectivity. Furthermore the dredging work can be supervised by giving the dredge master border guidelines or quality limits.

3 SCOPE OF SERVICE / OPTIONAL ITEMS Preparation and Commissioning
Interpretation and integration of existing data on first dredge plan as well as on the morphology of the sea bed and design horizon, delivery and commissioning of the system, basic survey of the reference station (once at start up)
