CanCreativeExpressionbeMedicine?Discoverhowcreativeexpressionreducesthephysicalandemotionalburdenassociatedwithvarioustypesofhealthconditionsandlifecircumstances.Exploretherelationshipbetweenhealthandcreativeexpressionthroughscientificresearch.Empowerindividualsthroughinnovativeprogramsandtools.Engageourcommunitythroughsharedstoriesof“artandhealing.”JEREMYNOBEL,MD,MPHAsapracticinggeneralinternistformanyyears,Dr.Nobelexperienced“thefrontlines”ofhealthcareanditsdelivery.Currently,throughhisfacultyappointmentsattheHarvardSchoolofPublicHealthandtheHarvardMedicalSchool,Dr.Nobel’steaching,research,andcommunity-basedprojectsaddressthedesignofhealthcaredeliverysystemsthatimprovequality,cost-effectivenessandaccess.Hisworkhasbeenthebasisofsignificantimprovementsinpreventative,acute,chronic,rehabilitative,andendoflifemedicalcarethatfocusonunderstandingwhatqualityhealthcaremeansfromapatientperspective,andhowbesttodeliverit.Dr.Nobelisalsoarecognizedleaderinthefieldofmedicalhumanities,aninterdisciplinaryendeavorthatdrawsonadiverserangeoffields,includingthecreativearts,toinformmedicaleducationandpractice.HeisthefounderandpresidentoftheFoundationforArtandHealing(www.ArtandHealing.org)whosesignatureinitiative,theUnLonelyProject(www.UnLonelyProject.org),addressingthepersonalandpublichealthchallengesoflonelinessandsocialisolation,hasgainednationalvisibility.Hisworkisdedicatedtoexploringtheimportantrelationshipbetweencreativeexpressionandhealthandwell-being,bringingthosebenefitstoindividualsandcommunitiesthroughinnovativeprogramsandanactiveresearchagenda.Apublishedpoet,Dr.NobelhasreceivedseveralawardsforhispoetryincludingtheBain-SwiggettPrizefromPrincetonUniversity,andtheAmericanAcademyofPoetsPrizefromtheUniversityofPennsylvania.Heisalsoaphotographer,andateacher—apractitionerofthehumanities.Withtheuniquebackgroundandtrainingrequiredtobridgescientificandhumanisticdisciplines,hehascontributedtosignificantexplorationsintohowcreativeexpressionmitigatesillnessandenhanceswell-being.Hehasbecomeaprominentadvocateforcreativeengagement,ancillarytoandintegratedwithtraditionalmedicalcare,asapathwaytohealing.TheUnLonelyProjectisthesignatureinitiativeofnonprofitorganizationTheFoundationforArt&Healing,whosemissionistobroadenpublicawarenessofthenegativephysicalandmentalhealthconsequencesofloneliness,whilepromotingcreativearts-basedinterventionstoreduceitsburden.TheUnLonelyProjecthasthreeprimarygoals:first,toraiseawarenessaboutlonelinessasapressinghealthproblemandpromotecreativeexpressionasaninnovativeapproachtoalleviateit;second,tooffercreativearts-basedtools,resources,andprogramsformanagingloneliness,adaptableforarangeofindividualsandcommunities;andthird,tocatalyzeandconductfurtherresearchintohowtomosteffectivelyreducetheburdenoflonelinessformillionsofAmericans.TheUnLonelyProjecthasgarnerednationalvisibility,includingbeingfeaturedontheTodayShow,TheNewYorkTimesandPsychologyToday.

VickyMorgan,ArtTherapistArtTherapyforWellnessintheCreativeAgeArttherapyisamentalhealthprofession.Ithasbeenconsciouslydevelopedoverdecadesofstudyingtheeffectsofart-makingforpeoplewithmentalillness,addiction,medicalneeds,andtrauma.Benefitsofart-makingforallmembersofsocietyhaveenteredourpopularconsciousness.Yet,itisimportanttorealizethatwhenartprocessesareusedwithoutpropertraining,harmcancometopeoplewithvulnerabilities.Thispresentationprovidesanoverviewofhowarttherapydevelopedwithinhealthcare,education,andcommunitysettings.Arttherapyasapsychologicallyandartisticallyinformedprofessionwillbeshared.Attentionwillbepaidtoarttherapisteducationandpracticesettings.Arts-basedpracticestopromotewellnesswillbediscussed.Scopeofpracticeforethicalcareofindividuals,groups,andcommunitieswillbeexplored.Havinganinformedproviderisasafeguardforthewell-beingofpeopleengagingintherapeuticart-making.VickieMorganisaregisteredarttherapist(ATR),licensedclinicalmentalhealthcounselor(CMHC),andeducator.SheprovidesarttherapycounselingattheUtahNeuropsychiatricInstituteandteachesforSaltLakeCommunityCollege.Sheutilizesarts-basedmodelsappliedtopsychoeducational,CBT,self-efficacy,andgrouppsychodynamictherapies.VickieispresidentoftheUtahChapteroftheAmericanArtTherapyAssociation,isaCertifiedChangeLeaderwiththeUtahDivisionofArtsandMuseums,andhasworkedwithcommunityorganizations,includingBadDogArts,ArtAccess,CentroCivicoMexicano,andtheUniversityofUtahWomens’ResourceCenter.VickieearnedherMasterofArtsinArtTherapyattheSchooloftheArtInstituteofChicago.Asapracticingartistwhoseworkexplorestheintersectionofpersonal,psychologicalandculturalinfluencesonidentitydevelopment,harm,andresiliency,Vickie’sworkisfocusedonsupportingexpressiveart-makingtoimprovethelivesofpeopleandcommunities.

DebraEve,MAfounderandwriter,theLaterBloomerBlog.WhatHistory'sMostFascinatingLateBloomersCanTeachUsAboutCreativityandReinventionLaterBoomer:InspirationtoReinventDidyouknowthatmanyofhistory'smostfascinatingindividualsstartedcreatingatmidlifeandlater?BramStokerwrotehisfirstnovelinhis40s;hisfourth,atage50,wasthehorrorclassicDracula.Inher60s,FrancesGlessnerLeeadvancedthefieldofcrimesceneinvestigation—usingdollhouses.GrandmaMosesstartedpaintingat76becausearthritismadeneedleworktoopainful.Shecreatediconic"old-timey"artforanotherquarter-century.Discoverhowtheseandother"late"bloomersreimaginedthemselvesandwhyanyagecanbea"choose-your-own-adventure"story!Debrahasvariouslybeenanarchaeologist,amartialartist,andasoftwaretrainer.Inher50s,afterhercorporatejoblefthersickandburnedout,sheresolvedtohealusingherpassionforwriting.Butwhenshesearchedthemediaforstoriesoflate-bloomingcreativity,shemostlyfounddiscouraging"30under30"lists.ShelaunchedthepopularblogLaterBloomer:CreativityNeverGetsOld.Inaculturethatelevatesyouthandprodigy,Debraexcavatesstoriesofdeeperachievementthathavelittletodowithmoney.Lastyear,shewasfinallyabletoditchhercorporatejobandembracewritingfull-time.In2020,LaterBloomercelebratesadecadeontheInternet.

JoniWilsonandCharaHuckins–TannerDanceTheaterDanceThroughLife-findingopenspacesandplacesforcreativityInthisworkshop,participantswillexplorethephysicalandcognitiveaspectsofopenspacesthroughmovement.Engagingincreativeactivitiesthroughoutthespanoflifeoffersdepthandenrichesourperspective,increasesoverallwellness,andencouragesustogazeimaginativelyatoursurroundings.Openspacecanprovideopportunitiesforexploration,bytraversingthroughanddiscoveringnewplaces.Participantswillimproviseusingphotosandimageryfromthegreatopenspacesofearth’slandscape.TheimageswillincludeexquisitenativeUtahlandscapesandvariousimagesfromdiversecontinents.Explorationthroughmovementwillalsohelpparticipantsdiscovertheconnectionbetweendanceandourenvironment,delvingintothecausallinkbetweenmovement,andone’ssurroundingspace.Theworkshopwillincludemoving,discussing,andprovidingideasforfurtherimplementationintoahealthydailylife.Wewillexplorenotonlytheexternalenvironment,butalsotheintrinsiccreativevaluegeneratedthroughtheseopenspaces,therebyopeningspaceforlocomotiveinspiration.Participantswillalsobeprovidedwithlessonplansandoutlinesforthespecifiedworkshoptoguidethemthroughcreatingtheirowncontinualopenspaces.JoniUrryWilsonbeganherdancecareerasachildwithVirginiaTanner,andhascontinuedperformingandteachingnationallyandinternationallyforthepast30years.ShereceivedanHonorsBFAfromtheUniversityofUtahandanMFAinDancePerformanceandChoreographyfromMillsCollegeinOakland,California.Ms.WilsonhastaughtdanceatMillsCollege,PurdueUniversity,WeberStateUniversityandUniversityofHawaiiandworkshopsforteachersacrossthestateaswellasinternationally.Sheisanartist-in-residencefortheUtahArtsCouncil,SaltLakeArtsCouncilandVSA/ArtAccess.JoniisStudioDirectorfortheUniversityofUtahTannerDanceProgramwheresheteachesstudentsofallagesandabilities.Herfull-timeteachingincludesclassesforVirginiaTannerstudioclasses,balletclasses,TheChildren’sDanceTheatre,andDancerswithDisabilitiesclasses.CharaHuckinsisadanceartist,choreographer,educator,andadvocate.Asacertifiedmovementspecialist,shehasbroughtthemagicofdancetostudentsofallagesandabilitiesaswellasteacherswithherperformances,danceclasses,choreography,andprofessionaldevelopmentworkshops.SheperformedbothcontemporaryandhistoricalmoderndancewithRepertoryDanceTheaterfor19years.CharagraduatedMagnaCumLaudewithaBFAinmoderndancefromtheUniversityofUtah.SheholdsaM.Ed.inCurriculum
