Joensuu2015
The city of Joensuu was founded on the mouth of River Pielisjoki in 1848, when tsar Nicholas I
granted the village of Joensuu town privileges.
The river has always had an essential role in the history of the city. Settlements grew on its shores and the river served as a route for both import and export trade. New buildings are going up along the river even today: the last addition to Joensuu was the Penttilänranta district on the former saw mill area in Penttilä. In the old days there was a ferry connection between the saw mill and the city center, with a ferryman taking the saw mill workers and city people across the river in a row boat. The new Ylisoutajansilta Bridge [Ferryman Bridge] which connects the center of Joensuu and Penttilänranta is named after this historical ferry. The bridge was opened to small vehicle traffic in June 2014. At the end of 2014 another bridge was opened in Joensuu, too. It crosses the river at Yläsatamankatu street and connects the city center and Sirkkala, being the seventh bridge in the city area.
The banks of the River Pielisjoki have been heavily worked on since the founding of the city. The river has a canal and artificial islands, and even the lagoon-
like shape of Ilosaari island is man-made. Ilosaari island is a popular site for events and recreation, especially in the summertime. Ilosaarirock, the largest annual event in Joensuu, used to take place on Ilosaari island, but today the island can’t hold the 52 000 guests (2014) and so Ilosaarirock takes place at The Song Bowl in Linnunlahti, right by Lake Pyhäselkä. At the eve of the new year there is beautiful light art displayed on the river banks.
Pielisjoki River was an important route for timber rafting for the whole of the 20th century, and even today, if you take a river cruise in the summer you might see rafts of logs being pulled along the river by tugboats. On the city side shore of Ilosaari island there stands a monument for the rafting history, Ruuhkanpurkajat [Log Jam Breakers].
The City Hall, which was designed by Eliel Saarinen, is situated on the river shore, too. It was built in 1914, when the population of Joensuu was only 4700. Today there are nearly 75 000 people living in Joensuu, and its area is 2 751 km2.
Joensuu is big enough for everything from for busy urban life to rustic country idylls!
Welcome to Joensuu!

Karelia-Soutu / Karelia Rowing Tour 2015Karelia-Soutu is the biggest long-distance recreational rowing event in Finland. It has been held annually 30 times, each year attracting over 1000 participants. The course lies through the heart of the North Karelian Lakeland.
There are classes for all kinds of rowers: solo, pairs, families or even teams. The Karelia-Soutu Event is a rowing event open to all, and is not a competition. The organisers provide a complete service allowing participants to concentrate on rowing and enjoyment. Each daily stretch of the route is divided into sections of a few hours, with breaks. During these breaks local village societies and businesses provide meals and refreshments. At overnight stops along the route saunas are available, and there is a full evening programme of activities and entertainment.

Hiking
Ala-Koitajoki hiking trail The Ala-Koitajoki hiking trails are marked in blue. On the Eno side they begin at Pamilonkoski Bridge, which is also the start of the Pamilonkoski nature trail. The hiking trails follow the old bed of the Koitajoki River. There is an assessible camp-fire site at Pamilonkoski.
Harpatti skiing and hiking trailA series of paths, 2–10 km long, have been marked in the Harpatti area. Hikes start at either the Sports Center in Eno, Purokyläntie 7, or by the Heposärkkä Cemetery parking lot, Kirkkotie 10.
Kaltimo loopThe Kaltimo Loop is a 25 km long path around Lake Kaltimojärvi near the village of Eno. Marked in orange, the trail links up with the Patvinpolku, marked in orange, at the northeastern stretches of the lake. Going west from that point is the trail to Kolvananuuro and the Koli Trail.
Kolvananuuro nature trailFrom the perspective of conservation, Kolvananuuro is the most sig-nificant natural sight in Eno. It is comprised of two parts, the south-ern section is about 4 km long and 0.4 km wide; the northern section is slightly narrower and about 2.8 km long. The gorge is flanked by steep, in places vertical, walls. The nature trail is 5 km long and skirts the gorge, at points moving along its bottom. The trail is chal-lenging. Printed maps of the nature trail are not available. Further information: www.vaellus.info or www.luontoon.fi
More information about nature trails is available at the Eno service point ([email protected]) as well as at www.vaellus.info.
Snowmobile routesMarked snowmobile tracks through the North Karelian landscape run from the border with Kontiolahti to Uimaharju and then on to Koli, Lieksa and Ilomantsi. Kiihtelysvaara
HikingThe longest hiking trail in Kiihtelysvaara is the approx. 38 km long Oravantaival trail, running from Riuttalampi to Raatevaara. The trail passes the urban areas of Heinävaara and Kiihtelysvaara, runs among clear streams and ponds and pays a visit to Valkeasuo. There are 5 lean-tos along the trail and there is a connection from Raatevaara to the Jänispolku trail in Tohmajärvi.
Maps of Oravantaival for sale (2€) at the Kiihtelysvaara service point and the Karelia Expert Tourist Service info. Printed maps of other nature trails of Kiihtelysvaara are not available.
Myllypolku trail (6 km) and the Hietajärvi loop (6,5 km) are located near the urban areas of Kiihtelysvaara.
The Oskolankoski nature trail (3,5km) winds along the Jänisjoki waterway in wild forests.
The Hiidenvaara nature trail (2km), with its atmosphere of the old forest and its magnificent views, is located near the village of Keskijärvi.
Canoeing
Jänisjoki Canoeing RouteThis canoeing route is situated in North Karelia in the Tuupovaara, Kiihtelysvaara, Tohmajärvi and Värtsilä areas. The beginning of the route has three parts, and is formed by the Jänisjoki, Kuuttijoki and Kotajoki rivers. These three forks of the Jänisjoki River empty into Lake Loitimo. From Loitimo the route continues as the Jänisjoki River to the Russo–Finnish border in Värtsilä. In Russia the river flows into Lake Jänisjärvi. The length of the route from each of
the starting points to the end in Värtsilä is about 85 km. There are several points to start or to end your trip, and you can choose the length of the route to suit yourself.
FishingHietajärvi and Peltokoski in Huhtilampi
PyhäselkäThe Kalliojärvi route passes along the floor of a stone gorge sur-rounding Lake Kalliojärvi. Its length is 3,5 km and the trail is mainly a forest path through a varying landscape. The route traverses an area of steep rocks. Along the route is a lean-to.
The Elovaara nature trail is located in the immediate vicinity of Hammaslahti, about 2 km from the municipal centre towards Rääk-kylä. The Elovaara eskers are part of a large formation of ridges and form an impressive range of kettle holes and ridges. The ridge area is cut by 2.5 and 1.5 km-long nature trails. The routes are very suitable for educational purposes. One of the area’s campsites is suitable for the handicapped.
Updated information about other recreational facilities in Py-häselkä can be found at www.joensuu.fi/liikunta.

did rapids can be found at Vekarus. Watch the birds playing in the river from the Höttönen bird-watching tower. The Koskenniska Mill and Inn Museum displays the Karelian cultural tradition and the Pörtsämö Orthodox Wilderness Burial Ground is found at the shore of Lake Öllölä. The 35-km trail is challenging to traverse. It passes along forest paths and forest roads. Causeways have been built across wetlands and bridges over rivers and streams. The shepherd’s logo is the trail-marker and is found on poles and signposts. Trees are marked with orange dots. Directions and distances are marked on signposts. Guideposts along the trail have maps showing the exact location and there are also well-kept campsites. The route has a hand operated cable ferry which is in use outside the ground frost period.
Vekarus Outdoor Recreation Area The Vekarus Outdoor Recreation Area is one of Joensuu’s finest natural sights. It includes three rapids, the most powerful being Vekaruskoski. Two bridges cross the rapids. Vekarus is an outstand-ing location for fishermen. The area is bounded by a two-km long path and has two lean-tos and an accessible Lappish hut section (outhouse, firewood storage, Lappish hut, campfire and picnic ta-bles). All the structures and open areas are accessible, so wheelchair use is also possible. Vekarus is very suitable for day trips. A rental cabin with its sauna and cooking shed is useful for longer visits (cf. accommodation). Parking: Kärnäläntie 27, 82750 Öllölä
Koskenniska Lappish Hut Area The Koskenniska Lappish Hut Area is situated at a beautiful spot on the shore of Lake Alajärvi and is suitable for a variety of purposes: tenting, a rest spot, swimming, cooking, overnighting and fishing. The log grill shed is spacious and in the yard there is also a campfire, children’s playground, picnic tables, changing rooms, firewood stor-age and an accessible outhouse. The roads are passable by car when
there is no snow. The area has been made accessible and wheelchair users have been considered. The outhouse and grill shed are wheel-chair-friendly and the broad causeway makes access to the beach easy. In winter a ski trail passes through the area and the Lappish hut has become a popular rest stop for coffee and grilling sausage. Koskenniska Museum Area: Koskenniskantie 14, 82750 Öllölä
Niiralanniemi Outdoor Recreation AreaA naturally beautiful area located at the northern end of Lake Eimisjärvi. It has a beach, changing rooms, dock and campfire. The cooking shed and outhouse are unhindered. The area also has a separate lean-to. Niiralanniementie, 82850 Kinnasniemi
Canoeing
Jänisjoki Canoeing RouteAn 85 km long canoeing route. Its beginning is divided into three parts: the Kovero Fork, or Jänisjoki River, is the calmest and is suited for group canoeing. Kuuttijoki River is suitable for canoeing in early summer, when the water level is high. Kotajoki River is the favourite of rapids canoeists, especially in spring and early summer, when it’s fast and demanding.
Fishing
Jänisjoki Fishing AreaThe Jänisjoki area is a small watercourse including several river routes with plenty of fish. The rapids and lakes have been stocked with trout, rainbow trout, walleye and whitefish. The Jänisjoki reel fishing licence covers the areas of several fishing associations.
