JOBDESCRIPTIONforPOSITIONofYEAR4CLASSTEACHERFixedTerm:20January–11December2020

StMichael’sisathrivingco-educationalpreparatoryschoolsituatedintheheartofChristchurchcity,onthebanksoftheRiverAvon.Foundedin1851,theschoolisanindependentchurchschoolintheAnglicanfaith,setinthegroundsofthegloriouswoodenchurchofStMichael&AllAngels.At168yearsold,StMichael’sistheoldestprimaryschoolinChristchurch.AsofTerm4,2019,theschoolhas100childrenonitsroll,anincreaseof58sinceJanuary,2018,aswecontinuetorebuildaftertheearthquake,andthecitycentreisnowflourishing.Theschool’smaximumsizeis160pupils.Werequireadedicated,enthusiasticY4classroomteachertojoinourfriendlyandprofessionalstaff.Thispostissuitableforanexperiencedteacheroranexceptionalnewlyqualifiedteacher.Thepositionisfixed-termforoneyear,duetopupilnumbers.AsStMichael’sisanAnglicanchurchschool,oursuccessfulapplicantwillhaveaChristianfaithorwillbeabletosupportactivelytheschool’sbusyspecialcharacter.Althoughpreviousexperienceinanindependentschoolisnotarequirement,theabilityandwillingnesstoappreciate,respectandcontributetoStMichael’sindependentschoolculture,vocation,valuesandhistoricallegacyareessential.Ourpupilshavealoveoflearning,andachievewellinsmallclasses,incalmquietclassroomenvironments.Ourmaximumyear-groupsizeis20pupils.TheY4startingrollfor2020currentlystandsattenchildrenbutthiswillincreasethroughouttheyear.Eachpupilhashisorherowndesk,books,toolsandlocker,andresponsibilityforthese.Formalschooluniformisworneachday,andsports’uniformisalsoarequirement.Oursuccessfulcandidatewillbeahighlymotivatedteacherwithexcellentclassroommanagementskills,strongpastoralcare,andhighexpectationsforallpupils,includingacommitmenttosetchallengingbutappropriateeducationalstandardsforeachchildineachsubjectarea.Asanindependentpreparatoryschool,EnglishandmathematicsprovidethetraditionalfoundationsforStMichael’spupils,andsostrengthsinteachingreading,writingandmathsareessential.Soundknowledgeacrosstheadditionalcurriculumsubjectsisrequired,too,toinspireourpupils’curiosity,enrichtheirlearningandenhancetheirglobalcitizenship.InY4,thejuniorDiscoveryprogrammebecomestheseparatetimetablesubjectsofhistory,geographyandscience.Spanish,artandmusicaretaughtbyon-staffspecialists,althoughexpertiseintheseareaswouldbemostwelcome.

Responsibilityforreligiouseducationissharedbetweentheclassteacherandthechaplain.PhysicaleducationisasharedactivitywithY3.KapahakaistaughtasaY1-4activity.In2020,theschoolpresentsitsbi-annualmusicalproduction,duringallpupilstaketothestage.AtStMichael’s,informationtechnologyisusedasatooltoenhancetheteachingofothersubjects.TheskillsofITaretaughtwithinandacrosscurriculumsasandwhenappropriatetosubjectsandtopics.Computersarenotsubstitutesforteachers,andstaffcarefullymonitortheirtimeandusebypupils.OurY4pupilsspendlimitedtimeoncomputersinclass.Thenewcentralcitylibrary,Turanga,isawonderfulresourcejustfifteenminutesaway,andtheschool’syear-groupsmakesignificantuseofitsimpressiveITsuiteandeducationalteam.Accuratewrittencommunicationskillsareessentialforanyteacher.AtStMichael’s,twiceyearlyreportsaresenthometoparentsandrequiredetailedwrittenexplanationsofeachpupil’sprogressbysubject.EmailcommunicationssenttoparentsrechildrenandelsewhereforadministrationandorganizationalpurposesonbehalfoftheschoolmustalsobeappropriateandofahighstandardofEnglish.Despitebeingasmallschool,weofferawideextra-curricularprogrammeofsport,clubs,outdooreducationandeducationoutsidetheclassroom.Locatedintheheartofthecity,wemakethemostofourextendedcampus.Oursuccessfulcandidatewillbefullycommittedtodevelopingactivitiesandcontributingtothewiderlifeofthishappyandsuccessfulschool,workingasrequiredwithchildreninallyear-groups,Y1-8.Attendanceateveningandweekendfunctionsandchurchservicesisrequiredasnotified.Participationinannualovernightcampsisalsorequired.Asapartofoursmallstaffteam,oursuccessfulcandidatewillbeabletoshowinitiativeaswellasgotheextramile.Weloveplaying‘ideastennis’butmundanedutiesorcoverforabsentcolleagueshavetobemanaged,too.

ProfessionalDutiesforthePositionofYear4ClassroomTeacheratStMichael’sChurchSchool

StMichael’sChurchSchooliscommittedtopromotingandsafeguardingthewelfare,safetyandeducationofitspupils,andexpectsitsstaffandvolunteerstosharethiscommitment.Thefollowingdutiesshallbedeemedtobeincludedin(butnotlimitedto)theprofessionaldutieswhichyoumayberequiredtoperform:Teaching&Learning

1. Planninglessons,topics,unitsofwork,preparingandsourcingresources;2. Teachingpupilsinyourclassaccordingtotheireducationalneedsandabilities;3. Settingandmarkingwork(includingassessments)tobecarriedoutbypupils;4. Assessingandrecordingthedevelopment,progress,effortandattainmentofpupils;5. Planningandteachingalongsideandwithcolleagues;6. Coveringforabsentcolleaguesasrequiredandrequestedbytheprincipalorher

representative;and7. Teachinginamannerandstyleappropriatetoandrespectfulofthetraditional,

independent,preparatory,Anglican,schoolcultureofStMichael’sChurchSchool.

Assessments&Reports

1. Providingorcontributingoralandwrittenassessmentsandreportsrelatingtopupilsfor:

a) theprincipalandothermembersofstaffasrequired;b) parentsasrequired,andinaccordancewiththeschool’sregularterm

reportingschedule;andc) nextschools;othereducationalprovidersandeducationalassessment

services.2. Preparingpupilsforandsupervisingthemduringexternalcompetitions,assessments

andexaminations,asrequired.PastoralCare

1. Promotingthegeneralprogressandwell-beingofthepupilsinyourclassinparticular,andthroughouttheschoolingeneral;

2. Providingguidanceandadvicetopupilsoneducational,socialandbehaviouralmatters;3. Maintainingrecordsonthepersonal,socialandbehaviouralactionsandneedsofthe

pupils;4. Communicatingandconsultingwiththeparentsandothercarersofpupils;5. Communicatingandconsultingwithcolleaguesrepupilsraisingconcernorinneed,

includingthechaplainasnecessaryorappropriate;6. Communicatingandcooperatingwithappropriateexternalprofessional,educational

andmedicalpersons,bodiesorservicesasrequiredrepupilsraisingconcernorinneedofsupport;and

7. Participatinginmeetingsarrangedforanyofthepurposesdescribedabove.Extra-curricular

1. ParticipatingactivelyinthedailyChristianlifeoftheschool,includingattendingchurchservicessomeeveningsandweekends;

2. Supportingandpromotingactivelytheschoolvirtueswithinthedailylifeoftheschool;3. Coachingsport;4. Offeringclubs;5. Supportingthemusicallifeoftheschool,includingthebi-annualmusicalproduction;6. Contributingtothewiderextra-curricularlifeoftheschoolbyinitiating,implementing,

managing,supportingandaccompanyingevents,educationoutsidetheclassroomandoutdooreducation;

7. Attendingandassistingwithevents,servicesanddutiesonsomeeveningsandweekends,includingchurchservicesandPTFAfunctions;and

8. Participatinginoutdooreducationactivitieswhichmayincludeovernightcampdutiesforuptoaweek.

ProfessionalDevelopment&Appraisal

1. Attendingweeklystaffmeetingsaftertheschoolday;2. Participatingasrequiredinthereview,developmentandmanagementofactivities

relatingtothecurriculum,organisationalandpastoralfunctionsoftheschool;3. ParticipatinginProfessionalDevelopment,bothasanindividualandasastaff,including

PDdaysduringschoolholidaysasrequired,andpossiblyrequiringtravelandovernightstayoutofChristchurch;

4. Participatinginanyarrangementsthatmaybemadeforteacherappraisal;5. Reviewingfromtimetotimeyourmethodsofteachingandprogrammeofwork;and6. Undertakingsuchtrainingasmaybereasonablyrequiredbytheschooltoenableyouto

adapttothechangingrequirementsoftheschoolandyourrole,orasmaybenecessarytofulfiltheschool'sstatutoryorregulatoryobligations.

Health&Safety

schoolday;3. Maintainingcurrentfirstaidcertificate;4. Promotingandsafeguardingthewelfareofchildrenandyoungpersonsforwhomyou

areresponsibleandwithwhomyoucomeintocontact;5. Maintaininggoodorderanddisciplineamongthepupilsandsafeguardingtheirhealth

andsafetybothwhentheyareontheschoolcampusandwhentheyareengagedinauthorisedschoolactivitieselsewhere.

6. Vigilancerehealth&safetyontheschoolcampus,andactivereportingandresolutionofanymattersarising;

7. UnderstandingofRAMrequirements,internalandexternal;andpreparingthesefortripsorcamps;and

8. Vigilanceofhealth&safetyoffsiteatalltime,andinconjunctionwithcolleaguesandotheradultsincludingexternalproviders.

Administration&Maintenance

1. Participatinginstaffmeetingsaftertheschoolday,andasrequiredbytheprincipalorboard;

2. Participatinginadministrativeandorganisationaltasksrelatedtosuchdutiesasdescribedabove;

3. Attendingassembliesandservices;4. Registeringtheattendanceofpupils;5. Completinganyadhocadministrativedutiesarisingasrequiredbytheschooloffice,

bursarandprincipal;6. Maintainingthegeneraltidinessoftheschoolcampus,itsgrounds,buildingand

equipment,insideandout.7. Reportinganymaintenancemattersrequiringattentiontotheprincipalorbursar.
