Dear all,
Those of us who work towards the betterment and the promotion of the arts and itsartists realize that Brooklyn's future depends on keeping the arts a vibrant componentof the borough's identity.
It is a critical time for us. As Brooklyn has expanded its varied offerings in new andcontemporary arts, added new organizations and grown its real estate, we have lacked
a comprehensive plan to address the vital concerns of the artists that create the work. As many of you already know, both affordable housing and available work space for
Brooklyn's artists have been diminishing. Smaller organizations that support artseducation and develop emerging talent are struggling to survive. In order to continuethe growth of the arts in Brooklyn, we will need to explore new ideas that will address
problems and push this borough further as the creative center of NYC.
To that end, I'm hosting a town hall type gathering, on Wednesday, December 14 th atmy Corridor Gallery in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Hakeem Jeffries, New York State Assemblyman for the 57th District, will present his developing strategy forsupporting the arts and answer questions on a plan to address our critical concerns.
The discussion will be moderated by Michael Skolnik, advisor to Russell Simmons andaward winning filmmaker.
For the last five years, Hakeem has been a creative legislator on a range of economicand social issues, effectively representing many of the Central Brooklyn neighborhoodsthat arts organizations call home. I hope you will come hear Hakeem discuss new
strategies at the local, state and federal level that will work to keep creative resources
thriving in Brooklyn. Please join us at Corridor Gallery, 334 Grand Ave, Brooklyn at 6:00pm to weigh in and become involved in helping to address these issues that are at the
core of the borough's future as NYC's arts epicenter.
Sincerely,
Danny Simmons, artist
