Message from 2015 Na onal President
Dear Members, Senators and Aspiring members,
Gree ngs from JCI Mauri us!
“HNM!”
Every month, I receive these three le ers from my Nigerian friends. Of course, not being so fluent in the
new trend of abbrevia ons, the first me I received the message, I had to Google it to know its meaning.
They told me it is fashionable these days to greet friends “Happy New Month” on every first day of the
month. I smiled and thought that we, JCI members, are always up to a way to connect to each other.
As we step in August, I will not only greet you HNM but I seize the start of this wonderful month to wish
you courage, passion and determina on for this ending half of 2015.
From January to July, the members, senators and aspiring members of your local organisa on have
shown togetherness and have inspired other by shining and uni ng. It was a pleasure for me to a end
your recruitment session where you have seized the opportunity to showcase JCI, JCI Mauri us and JCI
Quatre Bornes in a wonderful way. I was also happy to meet new recruits full of enthusiasm to join in.
Now comes the me to focus on the future. The next months are revealing themselves to be full of
challenges, not only as a finish line for this year but also as founda on‐laying months for 2016. During
the coming months, JCI Quatre Bornes will need all its resources with the upcoming Public Speaking
Championship, the ACF project launching and above all, the elec on the 2016 Local Board, and the
working and vo ng of the plan of ac on for next year.
We count on each member, senator and aspiring member to be present, to show their commitment and
to unite to impact. This is the me of the year where your organisa on needs you the most and we trust
that your commitment and dedica on as ac ve ci zens will stay strong and that the momentum
provided by your recent achievements will propel you forward.
Allow me to conclude by paying tribute to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a genius,
a person who lived a life of selfless, an inspira on and an iconic leader,
who was so perfectly, said that:
“If you want to shine like a sun...first burn like a sun.”
Keep the spirit of uni ng to impact,
Yours in JCI passion,
Nousrina Peerbux

Message from 2015 JCI Quatre‐Bornes Local Board
There’s a lot of talk these days about the importance of purpose…
We are here all united with the same culture of purpose, by our shared commitment and
common passion to JCI…
Over the years we have seen our local organisa on change and grow. It has caused us on
numerous occasions to pause and reflect on where we needed to go and what we need to
become in order to be value‐added to you, our members.
We not only get be er by ge ng bigger… We get bigger by ge ng be er… This is why we
encourage all of you ‐ members, senators and aspiring members ‐ to show your responsibility
in promo ng our organisa on’s goals and mission. We need you most to be more involved
and commi ed in building together a healthier (JCI) organisa on.

As a new member in JCI, it was quite a daun ng prospect to be handed the project for the visit of the
VP as well as visit coordinator. However, now that I can look backwards to it, it was a very enriching
experience in many aspects.
The idea was to plan the stay and visit of the VP to the island from Friday 17 April 2015 to Tuesday 21
April 2015. The work started well in advance and the planning was communicated regularly to the VP.
With the help of members of the Na onal Board and members of JCI Quatre Bornes, we have been
able to schedule a set of interes ng ac vi es to fit the metable of the VP. Each and every ac vity had
to be planned me culously; from the pickup at the airport to the selec on of transport facili es to the
different ac vi es, including discussions over lunch. Fortunately, the Local Presidents and their
respec ve members have been of enormous help. I must admit that their coopera on has contributed
a long way to the success of this visit.
On Saturday 18 April, the VP has had the opportunity of par cipa ng in the launching of “Club des
Entrepreneurs” at Middlesex University, Vacoas followed by a Talk on Ac ve Ci zenship to students
of the University of Mauri us. During the evening, the VP was invited to a formal mee ng, cum
dinner, with JCI Senators.
On the following day, the VP held mee ngs with some local boards in
the morning. The climax of the VP visit was the dinner organised in her
honour at Great Delight Restaurant. The dinner was preceded with a
Forum whereby the VP could interact with all members present. As
project director, it was really pleasing to see a full house at this dinner
with all Local Organisa ons being well represented in terms of their
members present.
A er the night celebra ons, the VP resumed her official visit on Monday with mee ng with the
Na onal Board and lunch with Senator Arnaud Godere and Senate Chairperson Senateur Marday. In
the a ernoon, the VP had a recorded interview at the Mauri us Broadcas ng Corpora on following
which she had a couple of working sessions with Local Board members. Early on the next day, she
flew to South Africa for the remaining part of her official visit in the region.
Things moved fast, really fast. During her short stay, we have been able to
sense her energe c and pleasing a tude. She has been con nuous in her
effort to share her views and experience of JCI. She has been true inspiring
icon for many among us.
On an ending note, I wish to show my apprecia on to the Na onal Board,
Local Presidents and JCI members for their help and ac ve par cipa on in
the VP Visit programme. Special thanks to my team members who have
believed in me and given me unrelen ng support all through.

You could have the best speech writer in the world write a speech for you, but it’s your delivery that will either inspire your audience or bore them to sleep.
Speaking in public can be a very in mida ng experience. JCI Quatre‐Bornes provided a free
training session ‘Speak Up for Success’ training on the 31st July 2015 to all JCI members and
aspiring members, being an ac vity within the implementa on of the ‘2015 JCI Mauri us Pub‐
lic Speaking Championship’.
Through 3‐hour course, the 2008 JCI Execu ve Vice President Senator Aruna Pulton ad‐
dressed common issues such as poor prepara on, poor rehearsal and fear of either fail‐
ing to impress or having an in mida ng audience. She also provided ps, techniques and
exercises to all the a endees so as to refine their presenta on skills.

JCI Quatre‐Bornes would like to thank all those who have a ended the training. It was
wonderful to witness such a very engaging and produc ve session.
Special thanks go to Senator Aruna Pulton who conducted this training. Big thumb up
also to the organizing team for their dedica on and support to the project.

‘JCI Mauri us Public Speaking Championship’ is a flagship public speaking event being run every
year in our organiza on.
Hosted by JCI Quatre‐Bornes this year, the compe on took place on Saturday 08th August 2015
in the Municipal Council Room of the Municipality of Port‐Louis.
This year’s championship saw a total of 10 par cipants from the various JCI Local Chapters. The
young speakers delivered a five‐minute to a seven‐minute prepared speech each under the
statement 'Earth’s great treasure lies in human personality'. All contestants were to capture the
a en on of the adjudicators and audience throughout the a ernoon.
The compe on indeed encouraged ini a ve and sustainability. The Adjudicators, Dr. Jimmy
Harmon ‐ Director of Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund, Miss Darshini
Narrain ‐ Club President of Aurora Toastmasters Club of Dubreuil and the 2008 JCI Execu ve Vice
President Senator Aruna Pulton who also served as the Chief Judge were faced with a difficult
task in deciding the placings.
Congratula ons to Woomadevi Coothen of JCI City Plus who achieved first place, Ashish Padaruth of JCI City‐Plus as the 1st Runner up and Yajna Govind of JCI Quatre‐Bornes as the 2nd Runner up.
