Make It Mean Something Being Jewish ought to mean something, don't you think? Being a Jew should mean more than having bagels for brunch or laughing at Jerry Seinfeld's jokes. Being Jewish should also mean doing more than just hoping for a better world. Being Jewish should prompt us to DO things. Don't you think? Because we are Jewish we make time in our lives for Shabbat. Because we are Jewish we support our friends and family in a time of loss. Because we are Jews we do things to make our world more just and compassion-ate. There is a lot to be done. As we begin a new secular year, the Rhode Island General Assembly begins a new session. Our lawmakers soon will debate issues that can make Rhode Island a place of justice for the poor and a place of caring for the most vulnerable. In this year's session, lawmakers will consider measures that could make it easier for the homeless to find a place to live, and laws that would help struggling families afford childcare. You can do something to make a difference on these bills to make our state a more caring place. On Wednesday, January 3, the Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty will hold the Tenth Annual Fighting Poverty with Faith Vigil under the dome of the State House. The purpose of the vigil is to send a message to our lawmakers about the priorities of the faith community for our state. I would like to ask you to join us at 3:00 PM that day to do something Jewish – to help make our state a place that cares for the poor and that works to end poverty. If being Jewish is important to you, show it in the things you do. Bring Judaism to life in your heart by treating others with dignity and respect. Bring Judaism to life in your family by celebrating Shabbat and the holidays, and by caring for people when they are down. Bring Judaism to life in your community and state, in the words of the prophet, by working to "let justice well up like water, righteousness like an unfailing stream" (Amos 5:24). L'shalom, Rabbi Jeff Goldwasser

From the Cantor’s Desk By Cantor Deborah Johnson
The School Scene By Rabbi Sol Goodman
I don’t know whether to sing “Let it Snow!” or “It Might As Well Be Spring”! The snow may still be under our feet, but musically, spring is in the air! We have a fantastic series of events planned for the next several months, from our Martin Luther King Shabbat (Jan. 19) where we will celebrate this great lead-er in a blues and gospel mode; to our Teen Shabbat (Feb.2), in which a group of young RI Jews, spearheaded by Lev Simon and Caleb Gupta, tell us what they
think a Jew is in the 21st century; to our Sephardi Shabbat (Feb. 9), when Shireinu reprises the gorgeous, haunting music of our Mediterranean co-religionists; to All We Need Is Love (Feb. 10), a romantic Beatles-inspired Valentine’s gift from Raymond and me to you, complete with desserts, drinks, and dare I say it, desire?
But whatever you do, don’t miss our special musical events in March and April. This year, our temple is host to the annual Joint Reform Shabbat (March 16) with Temple Habonim of Barrington and Temple Beth-El of Providence. Clergy and choirs from all three temples will come together to celebrate the music of Ben Steinberg, one of the most important liturgical composers alive today. And if hearing his music is somehow not enough, Ben will join us from Toronto to worship with us, sing one of his own pieces, and talk to us about the past, present, and future of Reform music. As we continue to explore “Jews around the World,” our most ambitious initiative of the spring will revolve around the largest cohort of American Jews: the Ashkenazim(probably you!). With field trips and film screenings, a full variety of events will culminate in an Ashkenazi week-end with a MAJOR cantor/entertainer: STAY TUNED! See you at Services! Cantor Deborah
On Teaching Jewish Values:
As educators, we know that Jewish education is not just about imparting knowledge. It is also about teaching and modeling Jewish values. We know these by many names, but at the end of the day, Jewish values encompass all that we as Jews—as a people—hold as important: family, commu-nity, faith, hope, courage, tradition.
The list goes on and on. This is why our Jewish schools always have as their mission to foster not only educated Jews, but Jews who have learned to make choices based upon the values that we have held for millennia. I was recently treated to a profound lesson in Jewish val-
ues, given not by a Rabbi or a Jewish educator, but by a
former college basketball star turned parole officer turned
entertainer who has made it his mission to teach many of
those values to young children: hope, peace, kindness,
tolerance, acceptance, self-worth, and charity. These are
what we strive to teach as Jewish educators, yet they are
taught and modeled by an individual who is not Jewish,
and has no experience with Jewish education.
Baba Ras D is 6-1/2 feet tall. He enters a room and is
immediately surrounded by a throng of followers—
children and parents. His energy is contagious as he
greets every single person by name, or with some word of
affection. Sitting in front of a large drum, he leads songs
of hope, value, and encouragement, telling the children
that they have the power to change the world. The beat
of his drum is echoed by children—and parents—who
sing, dance, and drum along—more to his enthusiasm
than to the words. But in every word there is a lesson:
sharing is caring; cast your inner light on the world; be
accepting of one another; never lose hope. Do these not
speak to us of Tikkun Olam? Are they not what we want
all of our children to learn? Should they not be part of our
Jewish curriculum? The answer is unequivocally yes, and
that is why our teachers continue their selfless devotion to
helping our children grow into Jewish adults, not only
knowledgeable but also wise, caring, and compassionate.
Baba Ras D wears dreadlocks and speaks with a faint
Jamaican accent. Yet, in a room filled with Jewish chil-
dren, he would be—unbeknownst to him—one of the best
Jewish educators I have known. In his presence we are
reminded that we are partners with G-d in making the
world whole. Baba Ras D preaches no doctrine, but an
hour with him leaves everyone spiritually uplifted, and a
bit more hopeful and kind than when they walked in—
strong soul medicine for our times.
The song by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young begins, “Teach your children well…” With this kind of inspiration how can we fail?

Social Action By Bob Haiken
Sisterhood would like to thank all who came to Barnes and Noble and showed your kindness and generosity. We thank you for your continued support.
The Paid-Up Dinner was a success once again. All mem-bers enjoyed a delicious meal catered by Culinary Affair.
Sisterhood would like to remind you that if you need a Mah Jongg card, you can contact Joan Goralnik. $8.00 for a regular card and $9.00 for large print. Deadline for ordering is January 15.
The Hanukkah dinner was another successful evening enjoyed by many of our Temple families. It was wonderful to see all the menorahs lit up and families enjoying a love-ly meal together with friends. Many, many thanks to Ellen and Barry Rappoport who once again “catered” the Hanukkah dinner. It was a huge success and they did a wonderful job again!
Sisterhood is planning a Dinner and a Movie night for sometime in Early Spring. By request from some of our members, our next meeting will be on Sunday, January 14th at 6 PM.
Joanne Evans has volunteered with her children at Be The Change, our West Warwick Sandwiches at Sinai client, seeing to the needs of others and learning how fortunate they themselves are. They have been helping serve the Sunday dinner prepared by Be The Change, to anyone in need in the community. Drew Evans will be incorporating his service there in his Bar Mitzvah project.
And our next Sandwiches at Sinai date is 10 AM on January 28.
A NEW ‘WALLET’ TO SUPPORT TEMPLE SINAI
For Temple Sinai members age 70 ½ and greater, it is possible to make a direct charitable gift of an amount you choose from an IRA that you own. You incur no tax on the transfer (as ‘younger’ people would).
The amount you decide to charitably transfer from an IRA will count against your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and potentially lower your next income tax bill. It is a new ‘wallet’ from which to make a gift that saves cash for other needs.
Here’s the easy instructions to arrange such a gift:
• Contact your IRA administrator and tell them you want to make a direct charitable transfer to Temple Sinai Endowment or Temple Sinai, 30 Hagen Avenue, Cranston, RI 02920.
• Your agent will ask for our charitable tax ID number. Please contact the Temple for the tax ID number
• State the amount you wish to transfer (any amount under $100,000 annually).
• Then call the Temple office so we can easily match the check to you for proper credit.
• Let us know if your gift is for the operating fund or for the endowment fund.
A charitable transfer of a certain amount from your IRA is a wonderful way to “do more” for Temple Sinai and to do so in your name.
Please contact Joel Gerstenblatt or Jim Roehm or the office for any assistance or questions you may have.
Thank you,
Joel K. Gerstenblatt, President Temple Sinai Endowment Fund
No doubt there will be a few very cold days this month and next when many less fortunate than we are can make good use of the winter clothing we no longer need. Please continue to drop off your clean, usable winter coats, gloves, hats, scarves, sweaters, etc., in the collection box in our lower foyer.
A hearty ‘Thank You and Well Done’ to Phyllis Solod for the ten or so years she has worked putting sandwiches and lunch bags together for Sandwiches at Sinai. Phyllis has decided it’s time to retire but no doubt she will contin-ue to lend her presence and help when and where need-ed at Temple Sinai.
Last call for 2018 Mah Jongg Cards

The cost is still $8.00 for the regular size and $9.00 for

SINAI STUDIES 2018
Classes with Rabbi Goldwasser
Adult Education offerings in 5778 (2017-2018) include something for everyone. All classes are open to everyone and no previous knowledge of Hebrew or Jewish tradition is assumed. There is no required fee for classes (except for Introduc-tion to Judaism), although a donation is suggested for multi-class courses: $10 for Temple members and $20 for non-members. INTRODUCTION TO TALMUD (10AM: Tuesdays, Jan.30, Feb 6, Feb 13) The Talmud is Judaism’s greatest intellectual triumph, yet, because of its density and obscurity, many Jews know little if anything about it. In three classes, Rabbi Goldwasser will give a general introduction to the creation of the Talmud, its place in Jewish tradition, and explore some famous passages from Tractate Berachot, which explores the meaning and limitations of prayer.
