Letter to Our Readers Valentine’s Day, here today … gone tomorrow. Flowers wilt, chocolates are eaten. They’re gone and quickly forgotten. Make this Valentine’s Day truly memorable … for both of you. In this timely issue, our editor has come up with a variety of distinctive experiences to celebrate this “love holiday.” Take time to read, review and select the experience that might be right for you. Or just be inspired by the idea and innovate your own adventure. Where can you find a good Sports Bar combined with a comfortable restaurant offering delicious food, tasty libations and a warm, friendly atmosphere? Try the Chapter House in Howell. Since the Jaspan family took over this venue three years ago, they have not changed any of those noted qualities. They have, however, gutted the entire bar area and totally improved the Sports Bar. Read this issue’s Restaurant Profile to find out exactly what this venue has to offer. Every band strives to be the best around, but only a few get to claim this distinction. The Bob DelRosso Band proved its mettle as the best blues band and will represent NJ at the International Blues Challenge to be held in Memphis, TN. Take a few moments to learn more about this group in this month’s Band Profile. Now, meet a young woman with many talents. She’s a mother, a bartender, a retail salesperson, a cook and a skilled snowboarder. Patrycja Worniecka works at the Blue Moon in South Amboy greeting her customers with her sunny smile and serving drinks. But when Patrycja is not working, she’s indulging in her “passion” …. snowboarding. Turn to our Mixologist-of-the-Month feature and find out more. On the light side, let our contributing writer Steve O introduce you to Rachael Feinstein, a stand-up comic, actress and film star who is currently working on her own pilot for Comedy Central. Read Steve’s interview in our Comic Relief feature and learn more about this energetic and very funny personality. Hopefully, this information-packed issue of Venues NJ will provide you with enough ideas and suggestions to help get you through these winter months. So, don’t go into hibernation. Get out and enjoy the season.

And, the Jaspan family, who took ownership of the restaurant about three years ago, has not changed any of those qualities. In an interview with Tom Jaspan, who owns the restaurant with his brother Paul and his sister Pat Fallon, Tom said that the new owners have made some significant design changes to the eatery, including completely renovating the exterior of the decades old building and gutting and redoing the bar, which now includes a new draft system. A few changes in The Chapter House menu have also taken place, but not many, according to Tom, who serves the restaurant as general manager. The family also owns the Ivy League restaurant in Howell, where Paul and Pat spend much of their time. “We added a few fresh items to The Chapter House menu and took a few away, but basically, the menu remains pretty much the same,” Tom said. The extensive menu offers tempting starters, juicy steaks and burgers, chicken, seafood, hearty sandwiches and healthy salads. The family –owned and operated restaurant, offers a family–oriented atmosphere with seating in two separate dining rooms, which provide a quiet setting for a family meal. The dining rooms, one which offers a fireplace, offers a more relaxed, intimate setting for a romantic date. Seating is also available in the new bar for patrons looking for an afternoon or evening of game watching with friends on the 16 flat screen 65-inch TVs. Enjoy the cozy, casual environment, with its new wooden-style plank floors, high-top tables and bar stools. If sports is your thing, this upbeat bar setting is the place to be at game time when the restaurant offers the MLB package, the NFL package and other TV viewing that sports aficionados will enjoy watching. In addition to a wide variety of libations, The Chapter House stocks 24 beers on draft and over a dozen craft
beers on tap. Come Spring, an outdoor patio dining area will be open where guests may sit, engage in conversation, a round of delicious drinks and enjoy their conversation, meal and drinks under the
stars on a warm balmy evening. The Chapter House also offers a fabulous Happy Hour, Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. with food and drink specials, including, $2 domestic drafts, $2.50 well drinks, $3.50 house wines and $5 Margaritas and sangrias. Patrons may also indulge in the Late Night Happy Hour which runs from 9 p.m. though close, Sunday through Thursday. Those who stop in on Friday, Saturday or Sunday night for dinner will be rewarded with the eatery’s meal specials, such as Prime Rib special.
Known for its wonderful appetizers, The Chapter House offers tempting starters, such as Crab Meltaway, a special blend of crabmeat, mayonnaise, Old Bay seasoning and a three cheese blend, served on toasted French bread or the Bonzai Shrimp starter chosen by patrons which offers jumbo shrimp, lightly coated and fried, served with house made tangy chili sauce. Also on the list is Maryland Hot Crab
Dip, a special blend of cream cheese, lump crab meat, onions and spices, served with baked sliced French bread. Salads are plentiful here. Try the Pecan Chicken Salad, pecan encrusted chicken, sliced over spring mixed greens raisins, celery, shredded carrots and mandarin oranges, topped with Chow Mein noodles with sesame dressing or the Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna with romaine and iceberg lettuce, red onion, carrots, cucumbers, tomato, Chow Mein noodles and sesame dressing. This restaurant is also known for its delicious, juicy burgers and offers a menu that includes the Chipotle Burger, topped with jalapenos and the Chapter House Burger, a flame grilled burger with sautéed onions and mushrooms. Fresh seafood is also on tap at the restaurant with Zuppa Di Pesce, shrimp, scallops, little neck clams and Maine mussels in a white wine sauce with fresh herbs, tossed with linguine pasta and served with garlic bread or the Thai Chili Roasted Salmon, finished with a sweet chili glaze and served over sautéed spinach. Chicken lovers may choose Chicken Nonna, Francaise chicken breast topped with red roasted peppers, asparagus and fresh mozzarella cheese, topped with a lemon butter sauce. Fillet mignon, center cut pork chops and smoked baby back ribs are among other delicious dishes available. The restaurant also offers a menu for its littlest diners, 12, and under. Pizza, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, hamburgers, hot dogs, Mac & cheese, grilled cheese, and linguine are all available. The restaurant provides full-service catering for private parties, baby showers, corporate parties or any special occasion event. So whether it is a family dinner out, an intimate date or a special game you want to see with friends, stop in at The Chapter House where you will be welcome to relax, enjoy a good meal and a good time!

Every band strives to be the best around, but it’s only a select few that get to claim that distinction. The Bob DelRosso Band proved its mettle as the best blues band in New Jersey and will represent the Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee from January 20-24. Guitarist DelRosso, bassist Alan Leston, keyboardist Kendal Scott and drummer Glenn Johnson will now go up against 200 blues bands from across the world to see who truly is the best.
DelRosso began playing guitar at age eight and as a teenager looked up to rock guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower and Ritchie Blackmore before turning his attention towards the blues. Spending all that time with a guitar in hand certainly paid off; not only will DelRosso be playing in the IBC this year, a goal he has been working towards for a while, he and Johnson were inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame this past summer under the category of Great Blues Artists.
DelRosso, Leston and Johnson have been playing together for three years while Scott is a recent addition. The band plays several times a month and can typically be found at Robin’s Nest Rhythm & Blues nightclub in Linden, R&Bz in Bayonne, 709 Point Beach Restaurant in Point Pleasant, and Blue Moon in South Amboy, which is their home base
with DelRosso performing there for over nine years. It’s also where they had their Get Outta Town Party on January 10 when they were joined by other great blues bands for a grand send off before making their way to Memphis. The show also served as a fundraiser to help the band pay for the travel and hotel expenses.
The Bob DelRosso Band does perform some original music, but mostly
t h e g u y s enjoy
putting their own twist on classic covers. The blues
has been covered by so many for so long, DelRosso says, it’s important to keep it fresh and make even the old songs feel like new. Enhancing this ability is the fact that all four members come from all different backgrounds including rock and jazz, which brings everything together in a unique way, modernizing and progressing their versions of
songs over time.
The IBC event is a tremendous occasion for the band. “We are honored to represent New Jersey at the IBC this year. With so many great blues bands in our region, they picked us to represent. That means the most to me and my bandmates,” DelRosso relates. “We are going to play from our hearts and souls in Memphis, leave it all on the table so to speak. It’s an honor we don’t take lightly.”
The excitement created by the IBC is clearly evident, but the band is aware that, with 200 participants, winning will be difficult. But regardless of where they finish in the competition, the IBC is already a positive for the Bob DelRosso Band. Aside from a week of playing and listening to great music, this is an opportunity for the band to network and reach an entirely new audience. “We have not generally played outside of New Jersey,” says DelRosso. “That’s the goal, hopefully we can network and maybe line up some shows outside of our local area.”
The Bob DelRosso Band doesn’t have an official Facebook page, but does have quite a number of clips on YouTube. Aside from their usual spots, they’ll be playing several festivals over the summer. The Keyport Summer Concert Series is already booked and they are working on getting into at least one more.
New Jersey has an extremely rich music history and the Bob DelRosso Band is going to try to add to it. No matter where they finish, they’re sure to do the state proud. Hard working groups have always endeared themselves to New Jersey and we have one, representing us in a showcase for the world.

Make It A Pine Tavern Night Tonight!
Patrycja Wronieckaby CLARE MARIE CELANO
Patrycja Wroniecka, a bartender at the Blue Moon in South Amboy, is a woman of many talents. She bartends, works full-time in the retail industry and, when time allows, indulges in what she calls her, “heaven” -- snowboarding. She explains her love and passion for the sport. “I started boarding about seven years ago. I call it ‘my heaven.’ Whenever I’m on a mountain I feel at peace. It’s great learning how to become one with the board and enjoy the beauty around while doing it. I had the opportunity to go to Chile a few years back. It was honestly the best trip of my life. We were on top of clouds gliding through several feet of pure powder. Imagine falling into a mountain of cotton. That’s exactly what I felt.” Wroniecka has also snowboarded at Hunter Mountain in New York, and Killington and Sugarbush
in Vermont, among other beautiful locations. Patrycja loves the challenge of snowboarding, even admitting that she has a fear of heights. “Every time you get comfortable, there are more challenges ahead, more tricks to learn. I’m terrified of heights and it allows me to fight my fear. Whenever I feel my fear coming over me I take a seat and take a deep breath. I take the view in and make my way down the mountain.” This adventure seeker, who plans on learning how to surf, has also indulged in sky diving in the past. “I only jumped out of a plane four times, but who’s counting?” she teases. “I love the adrenaline rush and being able to face your fears. That’s what life is about, having faith and fighting your fears. Knowing that no matter what, you’ll be okay and you’ll come out stronger. Don’t be afraid.” She usually indulges in her passion of snowboarding with family or friends. “It’s beautiful to be able to share a passion of mine with them,” she relates, adding that she is now very excited about future snowboarding with her two-year-old daughter. “It’s great to be able to board now as a mother,” she enthuses. “I can’t wait until she’s on the mountain with me”
Wroniecka began working in bartending field about seven years ago. “It was easy and quick money while attending school,” she says. “Bartending allows me
to have a flexible schedule. At Blue Moon, I’m lucky working with close
friends and serving great customers, which makes it lots of fun.”

Flowers wilt and die; chocolate gets eaten, and who needs yet another pair of earrings or purse? (OK, yes, we know that most women will never turn down some sparkling gems and designer handbags.)
Love itself is an adventure, a journey of growth and sharing in experiences. We at Venues NJ would like to offer up another manner of expressing your tokens of affection -- experiences that will be highly appreciated and remembered for a very long time.
If you are single, grab another single friend and have a blast on Valentine’s Day -- it’s not solely about romantic love, but recognizing and celebrating the bonds of affection for all folks in your life.
FOR HERWomen love to get pampered by professional beauticians and massage therapists -- especially during the dark cold days of wintertime. Bestow your beauty with a day at one of the many luxurious spas in our area. Rejuvenation combined with relaxation equals divine happiness! She can select from many types of massages, body treatments, facials, hair care, nail care, waxing, Restylane, Botox and makeup services. Below is a brief list of top-rated luxury spas nearby:
Milagro Spa, Manasquan and Red Bank: milagrospa.com
Avanti Day Resort, Manalapan: avantisalonspa.com
Jeunesse Medical Spa, Old Bridge and Holmdel: jeunessemedicalspa.com
Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, multiple locations: handandstone.com

Turn Valentine’s Day into Adventure Day!Another idea for the both of you: check to see who offers couples massages!
FOR HIMMost men are not romantic the way that women are. Hearts and flowers do not appeal to them. Show them your appreciation for how awesomely they love you by giving them something that makes them laugh. Yup. Take him to a comedy venue.
Or add to his collection. Many men enjoy collecting a wide variety of items. You can both go together to any of our regional flea markets (Collingswood, Columbus, Golden Nugget in Lambertville and Englishtown), or you can scour craigslist, eBay and the variety of Facebook sites that folks are using to sell their items.
If he enjoys imbibing beer and wine -- why not pay for him to learn how to make his own to share with you? Sign him up for classes at The Brewer’s Apprentice, in Freehold (brewapp.com), and sign up too for the newsletter. Here, he can learn not only how to properly home-brew beer, but also mead and wine. Or try Grape Beginnings in Eatontown. According to its website
( g ra p e b e g i n n i n g s w i n e.com), “We are New Jersey’s premier brew on-premises craft brewery”. You can make a variety of ales,
lagers, stouts, and specialty brews such as bitters.” Visit the site to see all the upcoming classes available.
Other experiential ideas he will never forget, notably if he enjoys a bit of the adrenaline rush: skydiving, hang gliding, parasailing, flying lessons, auto racing, etc.
FOR BOTH OF YOUOf course, romantic dinners at any one of the fine dining establishments throughout our Central NJ region are sublime. You can also kick things off for the holiday by enjoying a romantic day or evening at a New Jersey winery during the weekend (the 14th is on Saturday); check out the calendar of events for each winery at newjerseywines.com, under the Festivals & Events tab.Speaking of that weekend -- make it a full romantic, sharing weekend by staying at a historic Bed and Breakfast, for example. Cape May comes to mind, as this resort town is known for its abundance of cozy, historic inns, as well as dining and shopping -- and donning winter coats while strolling along the boardwalk for a brisk, exhilarating hand-in-hand walk.
With that in mind, there’s one close to home -- Cedars & Beeches B&B Country Inn in Long
Branch. A bonus? You can both enjoy in-room spa treatments! King size bedroom, sitting room and featuring French
windows and private bath. Upon arrival in your room, our gift to you, your complimentary bottle of wine and bouquet of roses await you and your love. Shopping and dining at West End Village or Pier Village is just a few blocks away. Enjoy the NJ Repertory Company on nearby Broadway, which

offers a variety of theatrical performances throughout the year. Guests will receive a 25% discount on tickets booked through this package. (Call 732-571-6777; visit cedarsandbeeches.com).
Spring Lake is also home to several stately B&Bs. White Lilac Inn is, according to its website “built with a Southern accent,” featuring an eclectic Victorian style. (Call 732-449-0211 or visit whitelilac.com). Or stay at The Spring Lake Inn, where you will be welcomed with a dozen roses in your room attached to a romantic note, and
an assortment of chocolates. (Call 732-449-2010; visit springlakeinn.com). Both are nearby such renowned restaurants The Mill and The Black Trumpet (perfect for a romantic dinner), and if you fancy a luxurious massage, the Hand and Stone is only a few moments away.
Manasquan is home to the historic and charming Nathaniel Morris Inn; each room has a private bath. But the owners recommend the room called
Turn Valentine’s Day into Adventure Day!“Madame Savitsky’s Parlor,” which is promoted as “ideal for couples. It features a huge and comfy four-poster bed, semi-private veranda and ... a fireplace. (visit nathanielmorris.com.)Or check out the Cashelmara Inn, in Avon-by-the-Sea. You can enjoy modern
comforts in this Victorian mansion. All guest rooms f e a t u r e
beautiful antiques, private baths, and most rooms have lake or ocean views. Large rooms feature gas log fireplaces, and refrigerators; suites feature Jacuzzis. (Visit cashelmara.com.)
Part of fulfilling, long-lasting romance often involves cooking together. Another awesome experience is cooking classes -- for both men as well as the ladies. Cooking together is a cozy time and showcases how well you both work together as team; it’s great bonding! Monmouth also has several delectable classes you can give to her -- or him -- or for the both of you to share.
Taste & Technique (Fair Haven;t a s t e a n d t e c h n i q u e.com): Always offering cooking classes including couples’ nights, check out the Valentine Party with host Diana Albanese, Friday, February 13th, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. (Call 732-741-COOK to check availability.)
On your menu:

Christopher’s Kitchen (Morganville;christopherskitchen.com): Upcoming courses include: Italian Cuisine, Thursday, February 19 at 6:30 pm; Latin Cuisine, Sunday, March 8, at 1:00 pm, and Seafood, Thursday, March 26, at 6:30 pm.
Get healthy together -- beyond the gym. Check out the programs and classes offered by Little Bites of Joy Cooking Studio in Fair Haven; littlebitesofjoy.com. For the healthy diet enthusiast, this cooking
studio (and so much more) is heavenly! Nutritionist, chef
and blogger Andréa Fegan teaches you how to create meals and snacks as well as how to view nutrition in your diet for a better sense of health and well-being.
Dancing together is quite an energetic expression of a loving partnership and can ignite fires of passion. Why not learn the Argentine Tango at Tango Pantera both in Middletown and at Monmouth University? This exotic dance will also help you both become fitter than ever. Visit tangopantera.net to learn all about it. If more classic dance stylings are your bailiwick, there are several Fred Astaire dance studios as well.
And why not go beyond? On Valentine’s Day, start thinking about hobbies and projects you both can do together -- and make time to learn, do and launch! Of course, you can bring the kids (if you have them) into the mix for a true loving family affair.
Regardless of your choice, make this Valentine’s Day an experience you’ll always remember.

O N B R O A D W A Y Ever had one of those days in the city when you feel like you forgot to put your skin on? Sure you have. It happens when you haven’t slept, or you drank too much the night before, or you’ve been brooding over bad news. All your senses, it seems, have been heightened to a painful acuity; your nerve endings are standing on guard. And every one of the manifold sights and sounds of urban life registers as a personal assault. You’re a walking target in a war zone, and that subway ride that awaits you looms like a descent into hell. Such a state of being is conjured with dazzling effectiveness in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” which opened last October at the Ethel Barrymore Theater. Adapted by Simon Stephens from Mark Haddon’s best-selling 2003 novel about an autistic boy’s coming-of-age, this is one of the most fully immersive works ever to wallop Broadway. So be prepared to have all your emotional and sensory buttons pushed, including a few you may have not known existed. As directed
A Review
by Marianne Elliott, with a production that retunes the way you see and hear, “Curious Incident” can be shamelessly manipulative. But more than any mainstream theater production I know, it forces you to adopt, wholesale, the point of view of someone with whom you may initially feel you have little in common. That’s Christopher Boone, a 15-year-old mathematical genius for whom walking down the street or holding a conversation is a herculean challenge. Played by the recent Juilliard school graduate Alex Sharp, in the kind of smashing Broadway debut young actors classically dream about, Christopher is in some ways a parent’s nightmare. He hates being touched, is bewildered by the common clichés of small talk and is sent into cataclysmic tantrums by any violation of his rigidly ritualized world. But he has a distinct advantage over most of us, and he knows it. “I see everything,” he says, while looking out the window during the first train ride of his life. “Most other people are lazy.
“They never look at everything,” he continues. The pulsating show that surrounds him insists that we feel as fully as possible both the privilege and the penalty of seeing everything. Mr. Haddon’s novel is written in the first person, and translating a subjective point of view into external reality is always tricky. As we follow Christopher’s attempts to solve a local mystery — the murder of the dog next door — Mr. Stephens employs an assortment of narrative devices to keep us within his mind. Most prominent among these is the use of a special-education teacher Siobhan, as an intermediary between Christopher, her student, and the audience. In the first act, she reads to us from Christopher’s diary-like account, which he has evidently written at her request. At the beginning of the second act, she makes it clear that she has persuaded Christopher to turn his story into a play. This inevitably leads to a slightly cloying and hoary theatrical self-consciousness, with Christopher bossing around the performers of his mini-memoir.
L i k e Christopher, we are all
continually trying to impose internal symmetry on the bewildering world outside. The great achievement of “Curious Incident” lies in how it turns the stage into the ordering mechanism of Christopher’s mind. The realization of more individual interactions, especially between the touch-allergic young man and his parents, is often heartbreaking. These clumsy, hopeful moments become metaphors (to use a term Christopher loathes) for the pure, aching effort of making a connection with anybody else. Since the play is a detective story (its title comes from a Sherlock Holmes tale), I won’t say much more about its central mysteries. As is the way of shadowy conundrums, they tend to shrink when exposed to the light. Christopher knows this, but it doesn’t stop him, or us, from basking in the triumphant glow of making it through the eternal obstacle course that is his — and our — daily life.

Rachel FeinsteinAs they say, timing is e v e r y t h i n g .
For this issue, we were i n t r o d u c e d to Rachel
F e i n s t e i n . Among her prodigious list of recent credits are the upcoming film, “Trainwreck,” a number of episodes of “Inside Amy Schumer” and an early D e c e m b e r guest hosting gig on “The View.” All that, stand-up work and videos, and now she’s just finishing up shooting her own pilot for Comedy Central.
V e n u e s - N J : Rachel, while I’ve seen you before, I never thought about doing an interview until it was suggested by Suzy Yengo. Now that I’ve been given this opportunity I decided to binge watch a bunch of your videos and do a little background research. So you left Bethesda, MD for NYC when you were only 17. That’s a pretty big move for a young kid, what were you thinking and how scary was that?
Rachel Feinstein: It was weird. I was scared. I moved with a guy and his band. I had no other options and I never even applied to colleges. My grades were so terrible. I just wanted to get as far away from school and the smell of a school as possible. I still have that hack dream that I’m in high school and find out that my grades were too bad to graduate. In one of those dreams the teacher takes one good long look at me and
says, “She’s unacceptable. She shouldn’t be let go into the world.” I think she called me rancid or something. I moved to New York and I had a vague idea of doing some comedy “thing” but I was a lost mess and I did a lot of nothing for a while. I worked at a store called Phat Shoes and Clothes on Broadway, my first job in New York and I was so excited. I thought it was so cool. I was fired in about four hours because it was a sales job and I wasn’t
s e l l i n g anything, but I still thought I was basically a Beastie B o y because I lived
in NY and had worked on Broadway. Even if it was just for four hours before being asked to leave.
V-NJ: Your career seems to be blossoming; you’re not adding to your resume one thing at a time, it’s more like 10 to 12 at once! What is it about you that resonates with people do you think?
RF: I have no idea. I focus on the one person who’s glaring at me in the room. The one with their arms folded, my friend Kelly Pryce, a really funny comic, always reminds me that these people are ‘probably not even thinking about us. They’re thinking
about some bill they didn’t pay or some fight they had with someone,’ but comics always find that one person. I’m working on letting them be and taking in the rest of the crowd. Really, I love this more than anything else. It’s so hard sometimes but it’s also more fun than anything else I could possibly come up with. There’s nothing else I’d like to do and nothing else I’m equipped to do so it works out.
V-NJ: A quick check of your IMDB page gives an impression that you are one busy lady. What else do you have coming up that you’d like us to know about?
RF: I’m in Kuwait this week. I have a pilot with Comedy Central that I’m writing and shooting right now. I’m producing it with Amy Schumer and Kim Caramele and I can’t wait to make it! Some of my favorite
people and comics have been able to work on it like Yannis Pappas and Sam Morril and Dan Soder. I’m really excited about that. I’m co-hosting ‘The View’ next week. That will be interesting. I’m filling in for Rosie Perez for the day. I get my own coffee cup! I get to sit at that table and chat about the news and try not to say anything too foul. I can’t wait.
We would like for this to have been a longer interview but Rachel is just too damn busy! I got to see her on “The View,”
and she was great. I predict that everyone, in less than a year, is going to know her name and face -- we were lucky to interview her before she got too big for us. For more info on Rachel just Google her name.

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.
Were you “the funny one” growing up?
I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.
Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?
I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago
to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.
Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?
The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.
Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?
I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

ResolutionsThe act of determining; firmness of resolve; a formal expression of opinion, will or intent. It’s that time of year again. At the beginning of each New Year, many of us reflect back on the past 12 months, review our “assets” and our “liabilities,” and determine to do better in the year to come. Some resolve to be more charitable; some determine to shed those extra pounds gained over the holidays; some intend to be kinder to others. Alas, after a few months -- or weeks -- or days, these well-intentioned resolutions dissolve.
A more realistic way to approach the New Year might be to simply set reasonable goals and work toward them each and every day. More charitable? Give a little more than you want to. Shed pounds? Push that dessert tray away and substitute healthy foods for junk foods. Show more kindness? Express gratitude on a daily basis, or simply hold doors open for folks. If your goal (resolution) is reasonable, it is achievable.
It doesn’t take herculean efforts to achieve most things we wish to accomplish. Don’t set out to be an over-achiever. Consistent determination and steady progress on a regular basis will usually help us reach our reasonable goals.
As we all look ahead toward 2015, keep in mind “if it can be conceived, it can be achieved.” How about a combination of resolves? Enter the New Year with a goal of living life to the fullest, while promising to do unto others as we would want them to do unto us.
Daily life can be simplified if we let it. Reduce stress and don’t make things more complicated than they really are. Enjoy every day for what it is -- a gift!

The 2015 Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics New Jersey
What: The 2015 Polar Bear PlungeWhen: Boardwalk, Seaside Heights, NJWhere: Saturday, February 21, 2015 Registration 9am; The Plunge 1pmContact: Jeri Hickey (908) 300-6095; Email [email protected]
About the Special Olympics: The mission of SPECIAL OLYMPICS NEW JERSEY is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Special Olympics New Jersey is a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization that provides sports training and athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization operates on an annual budget primarily funded through individual, corporate, civic and foundation dollars that make up more than 98% of the annual operating budget. All programs are free to registered athletes including insurance, facilities, equipment, uniforms, housing & meals for events, awards, sports, education and more. In addition to programs offered on the local, county, sectional and state levels, Special Olympics New Jersey offers athletes free participation in all activities at the Special Olympics New Jersey Sports Complex in Lawrenceville.
The Polar Bear Plunges for Special Olympics New Jersey are fundraising events in which participants pledge $100 or more to take a brazen romp into the chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of Winter. Crazy? We think so. And we know lots of folks who agree ... and who still take the Plunge for Special Olympics New Jersey year after year.
Celebrating its return to Seaside Heights on February 21, 2015, the Polar Bear Plunge at Seaside looks forward to surpassing the record year of 2012 when over 5,900 people braved the cold and enjoyed the day at this Jersey Shore’s iconic boardwalk.
Radio station NJ 101.5’s Big Joe Henry, “the Voice of the Plunge” broadcasts live from the site of the Plunge, with interviews, updates and a countdown to Plunge you won’t want to miss.
