A Changing Population
• York’s population has risen from 181,103 in 2001 to 198,051 in 2011 – a 9.2% rise, compared to 6.2% in Y+H, 7.2% England
• High increase in 20-24 yr olds – University expansion
• Rising population of older people, people with dementia and disabilities
An Ageing Population
• Nationally, by 2019 38% of the population will be 50+
• By 2029, this will be 40%• Children born today have >25%
chance of living to 100• 33,000 people 65+ in York, rising to
37,000 by 2015 and 40,100 by 2020

Four Cornerstones Model
Key Findings
• What’s good for people with dementia is good for everybody - housing, transport and community resources facilities
• Training and awareness for people at all levels and in all sectors (e.g. banks, shops, transport and leisure).
• York’s bounty of leisure, cultural and spiritual resources can help people with dementia to live richer, fuller lives.
• Health and social care services will need to change over time
• People with dementia should be central to helping to plan for this
