LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I have only been residing in Kearny for about two years but I have to say that one of the reasons I chose Kearny for my retirement area was the presence of a local doctor. Dr. Crawford has been of great benefit to me since I have both COPD and Diabetes. The thought of losing our only local Doctor and being forced to start over at the Clinic for healthcare due to an overzealous government bureaucracy has me really steamed. If we do have to start over, what happens to our medical records? Are they going to be confiscated as “evidence”?

In Support of Dr. CrawfordWhat about our prescriptions? The town of Kearny is the real loser in this “witch hunt”. If we, his patients, have any input to this process I would like to know whom to contact. Regards,/s/ Patrick SmithKearny

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Being a senior has its advantages and disadvantages. I sometimes go for lunch at the Hayden Senior Center. There is a certain someone who drives from Kearny. He has a few problems. He is irritating and uses his irritation to bother others. His worst fear is when someone turns up the volume on the T.V. Most seniors are hard of hearing so the T.V. is loud. I always sit with some people and so does he. On this particular day, he brought his tray to sit with us. At about

Senior center director could be more of a mediator

the same time our Director of Seniors saw him put his tray there. I said to the director, “He is sitting at our table?” She looked at me and raised both hands like “What can I do about it?” She did nothing to stop him. So, he sat next to a friend of mine and started talking to him. Then, for no particular reason, he said something I did not agree with. I talked back to him. His voice escalated. After lunch, I went outside to talk with a friend before he left. All of a sudden Officer Smith asked if he could talk to me. I said “Sure.” He told me I was talking too loud to said person from Kearny. I asked “Well, have you talked to him, yet?” He said he was on his way to talk to him. This other person got mad when confronted by police officers. This is my opinion. Why didn’t the Director of Seniors put a stop to this man coming to eat at our table? She acts like she’s not responsible for anything. Why? She should be able to settle anything but she did nothing when noticing him picking up his tray and moving over to where we sat - and, we were talking quietly, I might add. This person from Kearny seems to thrive on causing problems. /s/ Sandy Kay Giorsetti Winkelman, AZ

I again have been reading my Georgie Digs article, “My Collections of Writings” that mentions the 22 typed pages with the title of “Early Pioneers Of The San Pedro River Valley” that

was written in 1994 by Albert C. Bittick, Jr. I really enjoy the first part that was narrated by his father Albert Crittendon Bittick, Sr. who had been born in 1859 in California, and that narration contains the interesting events that had taken place before and during his father’s trip to Arizona in 1876. I also enjoy it because it not only mentions some of the earlier people who lived along the San Pedro River, but also in other areas. Names mentioned were Clark and Verdugo of Mammoth, also Putnam who had a store in Mammoth and a homestead up Putnam Wash. Also mentioned was Henry H. Young, Hannah Selleck, and Hannah’s daughter Jennie M. Selleck who married Albert C. Bittick, Sr. when she was eighteen years old and he was forty-five years old. Also mentioned was Frank Pool who had the lumber yard in Winkelman, the Winkelman stores of the Quarellis, Giorsettis, Giffin, Bill Kutsky, Tisher, and the Ortiz brothers, Blind Johnson, Apsey, and Henry Towner. There are more. A grandson of Albert C. Bittick, Jr. recently shared with me the online history of the Bitticks that is named “Show Me The Bitticks”. It contains lots of Bittick genealogy, that was arranged by Mary Bittick Gallano and Ronda J. Snider. Two online histories that I have had on my favorite list for quite a while are “Contributions from Ken Shake - Ray, Sonora, Arizona” and “Az. Backcountry Adventures“ by Ernie Parks. Ken Shake

included the history of his father, Max M. Shake, while working at Ray Mine, maps, Ken’s life as a kid, graduating classes, links, and index of contributors. Ernie Parks’ history includes the numerous trips taken, family excursions, Parks Family History, and Traveling Partners. So very interesting are the pictures included in these online histories which can be found by Google searching their titles on the computer.

three weeks. All of them are Christian workers who give of their time and pay their own way for the privilege of using hammer and saw, paint and nails, to make things better in the world. Good Shepherd Church in Kearny provides space for the recreational vehicles which they bring with them, and the congregation also provides some meals and pays some (but not all) of the cost of their materials. This is one of several such teams organized by The United Methodist

Church to serve in this way. They worship together, work out projects in cooperation with the local congregation, and meet with people to tell about their work. The Hand Me Up Shop in Kearny will benefit from their labors, as will the United Methodist parsonage, which is being refitted for the tenure of The Rev. Michael Eaton, the new pastor of Good Shepherd Church. The NOMADS have worked on many projects through the years in the towns of the Copper Basin.

Special to Copper Area News

This is fast February in the Copper Basin, a month that is passing quickly. The EXPO Women’s Exhibition is this Saturday, Feb.

24. A benefit team roping event for Jovanna Martinez Calzadillas will be two weeks later in Winkelman, and Pioneer Days will take place in Kearny March 15-18. Let me shove to the top of this list the fact that this week is the last one to place your order for a Pioneer Days shirt. The Copper Basin Chamber is open until 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, and will gladly process your order. Shirts sized small through extra large are priced at $12 each. Double X shirts are $13 and Triple X shirts are $14. The chamber office is in the Pinal County Courthouse in Kearny. The Women’s EXPO at the Hayden/Winkelman schools begins at 11 a.m. this Saturday, the 24th. Admission is only $3, admitting you to a great variety of exhibits, demonstrations, talks, and events. There will be drawings for prizes, too. It’s well worth taking your friends to share the experience with you.

The benefit team roping mentioned above is set for Winkelman Flats with books at 9 a.m. and roping beginning at 10 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the family of Jovanna Martinez Calzadillas, who thankfully survived the best efforts of the Las Vegas killer to take her life, although the killer succeeded with many others. Rudy Clark (520-240-6280) and Rene Arbizo (928-200-2269) will gladly provide more information on the event. Many new events and improved publicity should make Pioneer Days on March 15-18 more like the celebrative events of several years ago. There will be four days of the carnival and the parade will be on Saturday, March 17 (which is also St. Patrick’s Day). A sanctioned horseshoe tournament will take place at the Elks Lodge in Kearny that same day. Twelve different teams have registered for the softball tournament at Pioneer Park. The all class reunion will take place the same weekend, so many previous residents will be in town. DJ Flair will roll out the music in Pioneer Park

from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. on Friday the 16th, and Mariachi Caporal will present a free concert on the stage of Pioneer Park on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be two street dances held sequentially on Saturday on Alden Road with two bands. The first is Butcher Jones with ”home boy” Pete Avelar, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The second Conjundto Ambicion, a Tejano band, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. DJ Flair will also be on hand. Event tickets will be required for these events, and booths will be set up for advance tickets. There will be vendors all around, and on Saturday a desert transportation train will run from 1 p.m (following the parade) to 8 p.m. back and forth from Alden Road to Pioneer Park. A $5 wrist band will give unlimited rides. Publicity has been good for all this, and I expect a larger turnout this year. Personally, I look forward to the parade, Many of us can personally participate in this with a float or other presentation (It would be good to see

Exactly two weeks after suffering a 73 – 44 defeat in its regular-season finale against NFL Yet Academy, the No. 13 Ray boys’ basketball experienced a nearly identical fate in last Friday’s first-round state playoff game versus the No. 4 Eagles. In what was the third matchup of the season between the teams, the Eagles won a third-straight game by a lopsided margin, 75 – 45. The Bearcats, following a pair of seasons with a losing

record, finished 11 – 8 this season, including 9 – 6 in region games. The No. 15 Lady Lobos exited the tournament in similar fashion, falling to second-seeded St. Michael in Prescott, 67 – 20. Hayden finished its best season in at least 12 years with a 12 – 9 record, including 6 – 3 in the 1A East Region. Since the 2006-07 season, the most wins by a Lady Lobos’ teams was eight, which they reached twice (2009-10, 2011-12). Congratulations to both teams for great performances this season.

The Ray girls’ basketball team is two wins away from bringing the 1A state title back to Kearny following a pair of victories last weekend in Prescott. The No. 3-seed Lady Cats handily defeated No. 14 Bowie/San Simon in their first-round game on Friday, Feb. 16, 61 – 39. That win setup a quarterfinal game versus No. 6 Mogollon the next day. In a thrilling, low-scoring game that wasn’t decided

until the final seconds, the Lady Cats came away with the 29 – 28 win against the Mustangs. Sophomore Shelby Yocum, the 1A East Region Player of the Year, scored the game-winning bucket, securing the Lady Cats’ spot in the state semifinals versus No. 2 St. Michael later this week in Prescott. “It was a tough game, our opponent was really good, but we pulled through,” Ray senior captain Savannah Rodriguez told Copper Basin News. The game was very intense on both ends. I think that was our toughest game so far.”

Ray girls nearing State Championship The Lady Cats trailed by a point with 30 seconds remaining before Yocum’s heroics. “We didn’t give up,” Rodriguez said. “We wanted to win, and with our heart and teamwork we made it happen.” In their last 12 games, the Lady Cats have held their opponents to less than 40 points in 10 of them, all wins. They’ll need more of the same if any hardware is going to be on display at the school after this weekend. “That game (against Mogollon) prepared us for our next game against St. Michael,” Rodriguez said. “We have to (play) excellent defense. Like coach says, ‘Defense wins championships.’”A few timely buckets wouldn’t hurt either.Up next: Feb. 23 vs. St. Michael at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 24 (if necessary) vs. No. 9 Rock Point or No. 4 Baboquivari at 11 a.m. All games will be played at the Prescott Valley Event Center.

Strange winter weather brings fog, power outage

Rainstorms late last week brought in the eerie fog to the Copper Basin. Visibility was very limited Saturday morning until the sun finally burned off the fog.

A Kearny Police Officer keeps the public away from a dangerously leaning power pole at Ray Schools on Saturday. Fog hindered crews working on the pole. Power was out in the area until APS replaced the damaged pole. James Carnes | CBN
